CONTEXT: Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) is a species widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of some disorders.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of H. sabdariffa (HS) on the development of the male reproductive tract in rats following in utero exposure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant rats received 250 or 500 mg/kg of HS extract or vehicle from gestational day 12 until day 21 of lactation.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Both doses of HS increased the body weight of male offspring at weaning, without compromising the puberty onset parameters. At puberty, there was a significan

INTRODUCTION: As primary hyperparathyroidism affects mainly middle-aged and elderly women, it is an infrequent finding during gestation and breastfeeding. To date, less than 200 pregnant patients with primary hyperparathyroidism diagnosed during pregnancy have been described. Like in other disorders of the parathyroid gland, the recognition of primary hyperparathyroidism during pregnancy and lactation may be difficult, as clinical symptoms are not specific, while laboratory findings may be masked by some typical pregnancy-induced changes in calcium and phosphate homeostasis. If remains untreat

Bromocriptine, or 2-bromo-alpha-ergocryptine, is a semisynthetic ergot alkaloid. The basis of its therapeutic application in endocrine and neurological diseases is its action as a potent dopamine agonist. Its ability to inhibit prolactin secretion has led to its successful use in suppression of puerperal lactation and in the treatment of pathological hyperprolactinaemia causing galactorrhoea, infertility or hypogonadism. It has been shown to be safe in pregnancy. The ability of bromocriptine to reduce the size of large prolactin-secreting pituitary tumours has resulted in the recovery of pitui

A 28 year-old woman was admitted to Jichi Medical School Hospital because of amenorrhea, cold intolerance, easy fatigability and body weight loss. She was pregnant at the age of 26 years. She delivered a 3230 g healthy girl at full term without any complications. However, she did not have any lactation or recurrence of menstruation after the delivery. Serum cortisol was 0.7 micrograms/dl, and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) was less than 10 pg/ml. Both hormones failed to increase in response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia or exogenous arginine vasopressin. However, serum cortisol an

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alcohol exposure in utero may lead to a wide range of long-lasting morphological and behavioural deficiencies known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), associated with a higher risk of later developing neuropsychiatric disorders. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of cocaine use and abuse in individuals with FASD. This study aimed to investigate the effects of maternal binge alcohol drinking during prenatal and postnatal periods on cocaine reward-related behaviours in adult offspring.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Pregnant C57BL/6 female mice we

Neonatal infection is associated with increased lifetime risk for neuropsychiatric disorders including anxiety and depression, with evidence showing that dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-(HPA)-axis system may be partly responsible. Preclinical and clinical studies demonstrate that minocycline exhibits antidepressant effects through inhibition of microglial activation and anti-inflammatory actions, and of interest is that recent studies suggest that minocycline alleviates the behavioral abnormalities induced by early-life insults. The current study was designed to determine i

Due to the recent exponential increase in food allergies and atopic disorders, effective allergy prevention has become a public health priority in many developed regions. Important preventive strategies include the promotion of breastfeeding and vaginal deliveries, judicious use of perinatal antibiotics, as well as the avoidance of maternal tobacco smoking. Breastfeeding for at least 6 months and introduction of complementary solids from 4-6 months are generally recommended. Complex oligosaccharides in breast milk support the establishment of bifidobacteria in the neonatal gut which stimulate

Alcohol is one of the most common noxious substance to which fetuses are exposed. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of in utero alcohol exposure on excitotoxin-induced neuronal migration disorders. Female hamsters received alcohol (7%) for 3-5 mo or for the last 9-12 d of gestation. Alcohol diet was continued for 5 d during lactation in both groups. Drinking behavior was monitored. Peak plasma alcohol levels were 104+/-12 mg/dL and 225+/-6 mg/dL after 30 min for hamsters receiving an intragastric dose of 3 mL or 5 mL alcohol, respectively. At birth, pups received intrapallial i

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a brain imaging technique which safely provides quantitative, regional measurements of biochemical and physiological processes. Because of its capabilities, PET is well suited to the study of psychiatric disorders. Among psychiatric disorders, panic disorder is especially well suited for study. Since anxiety attacks can be precipitated by biological agents, blocked by anti-panic medications, and studied in a laboratory setting, PET can be used to investigate the elements necessary for the generation and treatment of anxiety attacks. Recently, we employed P

BACKGROUND: Lactate was traditionally regarded as merely the end product of glycolysis; however, recent discoveries of lactylation have revealed that lactate can also directly serve as a substrate for epigenetic modification, filling a critical gap in the understanding of "metabolite-epigenetic regulation." In rheumatic immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, the affected tissues, including the joint synovium and internal organs, are typically hypoxic. These regions demonstrate pronounced inflammatory infiltration and metabolic reprogramming, leading to t

Diets for feedlot cattle must be a higher energy density, entailing high fermentable carbohydrate content. Feed additives are needed to reduce possible metabolic disorders. This study aimed to analyze the post-rumen effects of different levels of starch (25%, 35%, and 45%) and additives (monensin or a blend of essential oils and exogenous α-amylase) in diets for Nellore feedlot cattle. The cecum tissue proteome was analyzed via two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and then differentially expressed protein spots were identified with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spec

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to retrospectively investigate whether parameters of routine point-of-care testing (POCT) predict hospital mortality in critically ill surgical patients on admission to the intensive care unit (ICU).
METHODS: Arterial blood analyses of 1551 patients on admission to the adult surgical ICU of the Technical University Munich were reviewed. POCT was performed on a blood gas analyser. The association between acid-base status and mortality was evaluated. Metabolic acidosis was defined by base excess (BE) <-2 mmol/L and, wherever applicable, subdivided into lacti

Maternal calcium deficiency during pregnancy and lactation may predispose offspring to metabolic, skeletal, and cardiovascular disorders in the context of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm. Experimental evidence from rodent models under severe or extreme calcium restriction, particularly studies by Takaya and colleagues, indicates that such conditions can induce insulin resistance, impair bone metabolism, and produce sex-specific cardiometabolic phenotypes in offspring. These effects appear to involve impaired placental calcium transport, altered expression of pl

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacoeconomic principles are increasingly shaping modern obstetric pharmacology as maternal therapeutics become more complex, costly, and precision-driven. Rising rates of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, obesity, maternal cardiovascular disease, and medically complicated pregnancies have intensified the need for cost-effective therapeutic strategies that optimize maternal and neonatal outcomes while minimizing unnecessary healthcare expenditure.
AREAS COVERED: This review examines contemporary pharmacoeconomic concepts in obstetric pharmacology, inc

Ketosis and fatty liver syndrome are metabolic disorders apparent in dairy cows during the transition period. The study focused on examining how varying levels of milk production in dairy cows might reflect or influence specific blood biochemical markers and liver health as assessed through ultrasonography. A total of 65 Holstein-Friesian cows from six farms were evaluated at three time points as follows: 7 days before expected calving and at 7 and 21 ± 3 days postpartum. Each evaluation included the body condition score (BCS), blood sampling for biochemical analysis, and liver ultrasonography

The public health concern associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) generates serious cardiovascular and metabolic impacts that affect both mothers whose condition went undiagnosed and their offspring. The review evaluates contemporary data about how GDM affects long-term health results. We searched published studies from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. A total of 710 records were identified, with 173 duplicates and 61 irrelevant records removed, leaving 476 for screening. After excluding 282, 194 reports were sought for retrieval, 97 were not retrieved, 9

The hormone prolactin (PRL) is best recognised for its indispensable role in mammalian biology, specifically the regulation of lactation. Bearing in mind that the mammary gland is a modified sweat gland, it is perhaps unsurprising to discover that PRL also plays a significant role in cutaneous biology and is implicated in the pathogenesis of a range of skin diseases, often those reportedly triggered and/or exacerbated by psychological stress. Given that PRL has been implicated in over 300 biological processes, spanning reproduction and hair growth and thermo- to immunoregulation, a comprehensi

The umbrella term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) brings together under its definition a heterogeneous continuum of disabilities linked by a common etiology and pathogenesis: exposure to alcohol during intrauterine life. Despite extensive research, definitive toxic thresholds remain elusive, underscoring the recommendation for complete alcohol abstinence during pregnancy and lactation. FASD poses diagnostic challenges due to its varied presentations and heterogeneous phenotype. Consequently, no singular diagnostic guideline exists, with multiple expert-driven diagnostic systems globall

Gaucher disease is an inherited disorder in which there is a deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which leads to the accumulation of glucosylceramide. Although much scientific evidence is now available, there is still limited data on the impact on the different life stages of women with this disease. Among other alterations, a delay in menarche has been described, although it has not been related to fertility problems. Menorrhagia is relatively frequent, being related to the presence of thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopathies or coagulation disorders. On the other hand, pregnancy planning
