Phototherapeutic keratectomy for calcific band keratopathy secondary to multiple myeloma.

To report a case of calcific band keratopathy (CBK) secondary to multiple myeloma (MM) successfully treated with phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK). An 80-year-old woman presented with progressive vision loss in her left eye with a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 4/10 in the left eye (OS). Slit-lamp examination revealed a central band-like corneal opacification indicative of CBK. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) showed a subepithelial hyper reflective layer. Further evaluation confirmed an indolent IgAk MM, with no indication for systemic therapy. PTK was performed

Morphea Involving the Lips and Gingiva: A Rare Case Report.

Morphea is a subtype of scleroderma that does not involve Raynaud's phenomenon or internal organ involvement. It is a connective tissue disease that features the excessive deposition of collagen in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, leading to a thickening of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, eventually forming a scar-like lesion. We represent a 19-year-old male Saudi patient displaying a white patch on the marginal gingiva of tooth #21 and multiple yellowish papules on the outer surface of the lip. Both teeth #21 and #22 have experienced recession and bone loss. The patient's clinical hist

Advanced Optical Wavefront Technologies to Improve Patient Quality of Vision and Meet Clinical Requests.

Adaptive optics (AO) is employed for the continuous measurement and correction of ocular aberrations. Human eye refractive errors (lower-order aberrations such as myopia and astigmatism) are corrected with contact lenses and excimer laser surgery. Under twilight vision conditions, when the pupil of the human eye dilates to 5-7 mm in diameter, higher-order aberrations affect the visual acuity. The combined use of wavefront (WF) technology and AO systems allows the pre-operative evaluation of refractive surgical procedures to compensate for the higher-order optical aberrations of the human eye,

Successful Restoration of Visual Acuity with an Extended Range of Vision Intraocular Lens after Multifocal Laser Ablation.

As our baby boomer population is aging and developing cataracts, so are our post-LASIK patients. These patients underwent LASIK surgery as they wished to be spectacle-free and are hoping to remain so after intraocular lens (IOL) surgery. Unfortunately, very little information is available regarding the suitability of presbyopia correcting IOLs for post-LASIK patients. This case represents successful implantation of an extended range of vision IOL in a 59-year-old patient who underwent multifocal ablation excimer laser surgery 12 years before. Emmetropia was targeted for the dominant eye and -0

Vitiliginous lesions induced by amyl nitrite exposure.

Chemical (or contact) leukoderma is a condition induced by local cutaneous exposure to chemicals or medicaments that are toxic to melanocytes and/or koebnerize preexisting vitiligo vulgaris. Chemicals known to induce leukoderma include phenol/catechol derivatives (eg, hydroquinone), sulfhydryls, contact sensitizing agents (eg, squaric acid dibutylester), and more recently imiquimod, among others. We report the case of a 37-year-old black man with human immunodeficiency virus who developed chemical leukoderma in the nasal and perioral areas within 4 weeks of spilling liquid amyl nitrite, which

Treatment Advances in Vitiligo: An Updated Review.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a common disorder of depigmentation caused by the progressive destruction of melanocytes that affects the skin, hair, and mucous membranes, clinically presenting as depigmented macules and leukotrichia. This condition, affecting millions of people worldwide, has a significant psychosocial burden on patients' quality of life, particularly in relation to skin colour. The etiopathogenesis of this disorder is obscure, but multiple factors contribute to the loss of melanocytes in the skin, like oxidative stress, inflammation, genetics, and autoimmunity. The treatment of vi

Symmetric offset versus asymmetric offset ablation with transepithelial refractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: In eyes with hyperopia, astigmatism, and mixed astigmatism Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) is a modality of surface ablation surgery. We center on the corneal vertex for all our treatments (all have an offset to the center of the pupil) and wanted to compare the visual results of symmetrical profile treatments versus asymmetrical profile treatments (the center of the treatment on the vertex and the boundaries with the pupil center) using TransPRK as corneal refractive surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed two consecutive groups of eyes treated with T

Corneal dystrophies.

Degenerative or hereditary corneal diseases are sometimes difficult to discriminate. Corneal dystrophies affect approximately 0.09% of the population. They are identified by the IC3D classification based on their phenotype, genotype and evidence gathered for their diagnosis. In practice, the ophthalmologist manages functional symptoms such as recurrent erosions, visual loss and amblyopia, photophobia, foreign body sensation, and sometimes pain and aesthetic concerns. Medical treatments consist of drops to promote healing, ointments, hyperosmotic agents and bandage contact lenses. Less invasive
