Spatiotemporal dynamics of similarity-based neural representations of facial identity.

Humans' remarkable ability to quickly and accurately discriminate among thousands of highly similar complex objects demands rapid and precise neural computations. To elucidate the process by which this is achieved, we used magnetoencephalography to measure spatiotemporal patterns of neural activity with high temporal resolution during visual discrimination among a large and carefully controlled set of faces. We also compared these neural data to lower level "image-based" and higher level "identity-based" model-based representations of our stimuli and to behavioral similarity judgments of our s…

Altered modulation of gamma oscillation frequency by speed of visual motion in children with autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies link autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with an altered balance between excitation and inhibition (E/I balance) in c … gamma frequency may throw light on inhibitory networks dysfunction in ASD. METHODS: Here, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate modulation of visual gamma oscillation frequency by speed of drifting annular gratings (1.2, 3.6, 6.0 °/s) in 21 boys with ASD and 26 typically developing boys aged 7-15 years. Multitaper method was used for analysis of spectra …

Decreased MEG beta oscillations in HIV-infected older adults during the resting state.

The introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy significantly reduced the prevalence of the most severe form of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Despite this decline, 35-70 % of HIV-infected patients continue to develop mild motor and cognitive impairments. Although neuropsychological studies have shown that HAND affects a wide array of cognitive functions, a formal diagnosis is still based on the exclusion of opportunistic infections and other common ailments, as no specific tests or biomarkers are currently available. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) …

Oscillatory beta activity mediates neuroplastic effects of motor cortex stimulation in humans.

Continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) is a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol that can inhibit human motor cortex (M1 … Parkinson's disease and modulated during the generation of movements. Here, we used a source-level magnetoencephalography approach to investigate the hypothesis that the presence of neuroplastic effects following cTBS is associated with concurrent changes in oscillatory M1 beta activity. M1 cortices were localized with a synthetic aperture magnetometry beamforming anal …

Therapeutic drug approach to stimulate clinical recovery after brain injury.

The identification of strategies by which the central nervous system (CNS) can transform itself in response to injury has incited the system … asticity or regeneration may therefore at first focus on surrogate markers, such as functional MRI, magnetoencephalography and diffusion tensor imaging, or investigate seemingly more uniform systems, such as spinal cord injuries. Abnormal MEG oscillatory activity during visual processing in the prefrontal cortices and frontal eye-fields of the aging HIV brain.

OBJECTIVE: Shortly after infection, HIV enters the brain and causes widespread inflammation and neuronal damage, which ultimately leads to n … ivation in the primary sensory cortices during rest and sensory stimulation. METHODS: High-density magnetoencephalography (MEG) was utilized to evaluate the basic neurophysiology underlying attentive, visual processing in older HIV-infected adults and a matched non-infected control group. Unlike other neuroimaging methods, MEG is a direct measure of neural activity tha …

Rhythmic TMS causes local entrainment of natural oscillatory signatures.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal elements underlying perception, cognition, and action exhibit distinct oscillatory phenomena, measured in humans by electro- or magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG). So far, the correlative or causal nature of the link between brain oscillations and functions has remained elusive. A compelling demonstration of causality would primarily generate oscillatory signatures that are known to correlate with particular cognitive functions and then assess the behavioral consequences. Here, we provide the first direct evidence for causal entrainment of brain oscillations by transcranial …

Induced gamma-band oscillations correlate with awareness in hemianopic patient GY.

In normal vision gamma oscillations are involved in object perception, are modulated by attention, and have been linked to awareness by way … , to which GY sometimes responded "aware" and sometimes "unaware". We recorded brain activity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in order to determine the relationship between local induced gamma-band oscillations and awareness. Physiological regulation of thinking: brain-computer interface (BCI) research.

The discovery of event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) by Pfurtscheller paved the way for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs allow control of computers or external devices with the regulation of brain activity only. Two different research traditions produced two different types of BCIs: invasive BCIs, realized with implanted electrodes in brain tissue and noninvasive BCIs using electrophysiological recordings in humans such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) and metabolic changes such as functional mag…

EEG predictors of transition from clinical high risk to psychotic disorders: A systematic review with implications for data harmonisation.

BACKGROUND: Prognostic markers of transition from a clinical high-risk (CHR) state to psychosis are important for intervention. Although electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) abnormalities are associated with psychotic disorders, their prognostic utility in CHR populations remains unclear. This systematic review examined EEG and MEG differences between CHR individuals who transitioned to psychosis (CHR-T) and those who did not (CHR-NT). METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, APA PsycINFO, APA PsycArticles, CINAHL Ultimate, Scopus and Web of Science Core Collecti…

Design and Fabrication of an Anatomically Realistic Multimodal EEG/MEG Head Phantom.

BACKGROUND: Accurate electromagnetic head phantoms are important tools for validating electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) devices and techniques. A combined M/EEG phantom would be particularly useful for its ability to test and validate multimodal imaging methods. However, EEG and combined M/EEG phantoms remain commercially unavailable, and phantoms in published literature require materials research and development processes that are difficult to complete or replicate. Here, we detail steps to create a highly realistic four-layer, desktop M/EEG phantom and demonstrate…

Bifocal Beta-frequency Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Enhances Somatosensory Spatial Discrimination.

Somatosensory inputs are sequentially processed across multiple brain regions via cortico-cortical networks. Our recent magnetoencephalography (MEG) study identified specific beta-frequency cortico-cortical networks involved in tactile two-point discrimination (TPD), including those between primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and superior parietal lobule (SPL), and between S1 and angular gyrus (AG). These findings prompted us to investigate whether modifying these networks could influence TPD. We therefore examined the effects of bifocal beta-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulatio…

We also compare full Bloch and first-order solutions over 0-3ω1 and for all three magnetization components. Amplitude sweeps identify the perturbative regime and the onset of higher-order effects. For SPARX, we compare an adjoint numerical …

Feasibility and repeatability of MEG-compatible patellar-tendon stimulator for eliciting knee-joint proprioceptive cortical responses.

BACKGROUND: Cortical processing of proprioceptive-dominant afference arising from the knee joint is largely unknown. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) can be used to quantify the cortical processing of the proprioceptive afference, but MEG-compatible and well-controlled stimulation of the knee joint is technically challenging, and thus has received less attention. NEW METHOD: We introduced a novel MEG-compatible stimulator that delivers controlled patellar tendon taps and elicits proprioceptive-dominant afferent input to the cortex in the knee joint. The stimulus intensity is adjustable, allowing …
