Increased Expression of Musashi-1 Evidences Mesenchymal Repair in Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevation.

This study aimed to analyze the expression of Musashi-1 (MSI1) in maxillary native bone and grafted bone after maxillary sinus floor elevation. To do so, fifty-seven bone biopsies from 45 participants were studied. Eighteen samples were collected from native bone while 39 were obtained 6 months after maxillary sinus grafting procedures. Musashi-1 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. MSI1 was detected in osteoblasts and osteocytes in 97.4% (38/39) of grafted areas. In native bone, MSI1 was detected in only 66.6% (12/18) of the biopsies, mainly in osteocytes. Detection of MSI1 was si

The Association of Upper Airway Anatomy and Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation Response in OSA.

OBJECTIVES: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) is a promising surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for patients intolerant to positive airway pressure (PAP). Nonetheless, more than one-third of patients have suboptimal outcomes, demonstrating the need for improved understanding of factors associated with treatment effectiveness. This study examined the relationship between anatomy measures from computed tomography (CT) and HGNS outcomes. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of consecutively enrolled adults with moderate or severe OSA (AHI > 15 events/h) who underwent HGNS impl

A novel dual-stage robotic-assisted surgical workflow for precision contouring of craniomaxillofacial fibrous dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Craniomaxillofacial fibrous dysplasia (FD) causes progressive facial asymmetry and deformity, while conventional contouring surgery remains limited by poor visibility and proximity to critical structures. This study proposes a novel dual-stage robotic-assisted workflow for precise and safe contouring of craniomaxillofacial FD. METHODS: The workflow comprised two stages: (1) robotic localization and depth-controlled drilling using a dentition-supported optical registration system for titanium screw placement, and (2) automated high-speed robotic contouring following the surgical pla

Unilateral Optic Nerve Diffusion Restriction After Sinus Surgery Secondary to Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Permanent perioperative vision loss is caused by ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) or central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Whereas diffusion restriction of the optic nerve (ON) on brain magnetic resonance imaging has been previously reported in perioperative posterior ION (PION), there are no reports of ON diffusion restriction in patients diagnosed with acute perioperative CRAO. We present a case of perioperative CRAO to highlight this neuroimaging finding for neuroradiologists and neurologists. CASE REPORT: A 71-year-old male without vascular risk factors underwent maxillary

Preoperative Embolization of Skull Base Meningiomas: Outcomes in the Onyx Era.

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative embolization may facilitate skull base meningioma resection, but its safety and efficacy in the Onyx era have not been investigated. In this retrospective cohort study, we evaluated the outcomes of preoperative embolization of skull base meningiomas using Onyx as the primary embolysate. METHODS: We queried an endovascular database for patients with skull base meningiomas who underwent preoperative embolization at our institution in 2007-2017. Patient, tumor, procedure, and outcome data were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients (28 meningiomas) underwent successful

No Pain, All Gain: A Literature Review of Anesthetic Options for Alveolar Bone Grafting in Children With Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate affect 6000 to 8000 children annually in the United States. Alveolar bone grafting (ABG) restores maxillary continuity, facilitates tooth eruption, and closes oronasal fistulae, yet donor-site pain often exceeds graft-site pain. Although multimodal, opioid-sparing analgesia is increasingly used, optimal perioperative pain management remains undefined. This review evaluates current evidence on analgesic strategies for pediatric ABG. METHODS: A literature review of PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar (2010-2025) identified studies addressing perioperative

Achieving the Optimal Aesthetic Benefit While Correcting Midface Deficiency: Utilizing A High Winged Le Fort I in Cleft and Craniofacial Patients.

Craniofacial anomalies are congenital disorders that affect the cranium and facial bones, with cleft lip and palate being the most common. These anomalies are often associated with abnormal development of pharyngeal arches and can result in the development of class III malocclusion and severe maxillary retrusion. Current treatment includes orthodontic decompensation and Le Fort I osteotomy to correct the maxillomandibular relationship. However, the traditional Le Fort I (LFI) advancement does not fully address the lack of skeletal volume in the midface. The high winged Le Fort I osteotomy (HWL

Sinonasal Tract Neurofibroma: A Clinicopathologic Series of 12 Cases with a Review of the Literature.

Neurofibroma (NF), a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor, is very uncommon in the sinonasal tract, with only a few reported cases in the English literature. Cases within the files of the authors' institutions confined to the sinonasal tract were compared to cases reported in the English literature (Medline 1966-2014). The 12 patients included 6 females and 6 males, aged 26-75 years (mean 46.2 years). The patients usually presented clinically with a mass lesion (n = 11), obstruction (n = 4) or pain (n = 3), with an average symptom duration of 42.9 months. Two patients had neurofibromatosis (NF

Full rehabilitation with nobel clinician(®) and procera implant bridge(®): case report.

Implant surgery has been changing in different ways following improvements of computer technologies. Since its beginning, according to the original procedures of Branemårk system implants, guide-lines in implants-supported prosthetic rehabilitation have been founding on the placement of fixtures in a fairly upright position, after maxillary sinus floor elevation; while in the case of interforaminal rehabilitation, an upright distal implant may need to be placed anterior to the mental foramina without nerve damage (although the consequence would have been bilateral cantilevers to provide good c

Complete arch site classification for all-on-4 immediate function.

Complete arch immediate function of dental implants requires a treatment protocol that takes advantage of residual areas of cortical bone for the apical fixation of implants. A site and jaw bone classification is proposed that has been in use since 2006 for all stages of atrophy for both jaws. The use of the classification is strictly for immediate function based on specific cortical bone sites in the facial skeleton to assist practitioners in diagnosis, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary communication, as well as to reduce human error in patient management. A recent series of 100 conse

Unusual presentation of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the maxilla.

The peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a rare and highly malignant soft tissue neoplasm in children and young adults. Fewer than 10 reported cases of pPNET of maxilla are available in the English literature. A 28-year-old woman was presented with the pPNET of the maxilla and metastasis. Two years after diagnosis, she experienced diplopia, and then magnetic resonance imaging was done, which showed a mass in the optic chiasma and parasellar region. The typical appearance resembled large noncalcified soft tissue masses in the magnetic resonance image and computed tomographic sc
