How does the legal system respond when children with learning difficulties are victimized?

OBJECTIVE: To understand how the Swedish legal system perceives and handles mentally handicapped children who may have been victimized. METHOD: Twenty-two judicial districts in Sweden provided complete files on 39 District Court cases (including the Appeals Court files on 17 of these cases) involving children with learning difficulties or other handicaps as alleged victims of abuse, threat and neglect. The children (25 girls and 14 boys) averaged 11.8 years of age when first allegedly victimized. Sexual abuse was the most frequently alleged crime (33 cases). Court transcripts, court files and

Curriculum-Integrated MRI Simulation Across Successive Cohorts: A Quasi-experimental Curriculum-Development Study of Cognitive Load and Instructional Efficiency.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) training is constrained by scanner access, MR-safety requirements, service pressures, and limited opportunities for deliberate practice. Simulation can provide repeatable practice, but evidence from radiography education remains heterogeneous and often relies on reaction-level outcomes. This study aims to describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a curriculum-integrated MRI simulation program using Kern's six-step model and cognitive load theory, while examining patterns in learner outcomes across successive cohor

The Risk of Suicide Attempts After Head Injury: A Matched UK Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injuries are associated with an increased risk of suicide; the risk of suicide after other head injuries, particularly in the general population, remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether people with head injuries are at higher risk of suicide compared with people without head injuries. METHODS: A 20-year population-based matched cohort study was conducted using nationally representative electronic primary health care records linked to Hospital Episode Statistics and Office for National Statistics data. Adults (≥18 years) with a head injury were

Who Benefits from Parental Intervention Programs in Youth Sport? A Systematic Review.

Despite growing recognition that parental behavior shapes athlete outcomes, evidence on whether structured intervention programmes effectively change parental conduct, and whether those changes reach athletes, remains scattered. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of parental intervention programmes in youth sport, positioning athlete outcomes as primary endpoints alongside parental behavior and mental health outcomes. Search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO up to May 2025. Quantitative and qualitative designs were included, as the systematic search identified 2

Nativity-Based Discrimination and Depressive Symptoms Among Adolescents from Multicultural Families in South Korea: Socioeconomic Heterogeneity in Vulnerability.

South Korea has experienced rapid demographic diversification, accompanied by a growing population of adolescents from multicultural families-defined in Korean policy as youth with at least one foreign-born parent, most commonly a Korean father and foreign-born mother. This study examines the association between nativity-based discrimination and depressive symptoms among multicultural adolescents in Korea and investigates whether distinct dimensions of socioeconomic status (SES) moderate this association. Data were drawn from two waves (2022-2023) of nationally representative longitudinal data

Cognitive reappraisal influences the organization of emotional episodes in memory.

Changes in our environment help to segment continuous experience into distinct memories. For example, switching locations can cue this segmentation process and enhance long-term memory. Experiencing a wave of negative emotion can also separate memories of adjacent events, but it remains unclear whether this effect is similarly adaptive. Here, we tested whether downregulating emotional responses alters the impact of negative emotion on memory organization and whether emotion-driven segmentation is related to mental health. Participants viewed sequences of neutral objects interspersed with a sin

Emotional Well-Being in Adults Born With Cleft Lip and/or Palate: A Whole of Life Survey in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research with adults born with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) has identified a range of concerns regarding mental health and quality of life, concluding that overall emotional functioning is poorer compared to the general population. The aim of the current study was to build on this previous work by investigating the self-reported emotional well-being of adults born with CL/P in the United Kingdom. DESIGN: An online, mixed methods survey was designed by the Cleft Lip and Palate Association in collaboration with the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the W

Identifying mortality risks in patients with opioid use disorder using brief screening assessment: Secondary mental health clinical records analysis.

BACKGROUND: Risk assessments are widely used, but their ability to predict outcomes in opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment remains unclear. Therefore, the aim was to investigate if addiction-specific brief risk screening is effective in identifying high mortality risk groups and if subsequent clinical actions following risk assessment impacts on mortality levels. METHODS: Opioid use disorder (OUD) patients were identified in the South London and Maudsley Case Register. Deaths were identified through database linkage to the national mortality dataset. Cox and competing-risk regression were use

Mild Neurocognitive Disorder: An Old Wine in a New Bottle.

The American Psychiatric Association has recently published the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The DSM-IV category "Dementia, Delirium, Amnestic, and Other Cognitive Disorders" has undergone extensive revision. DSM-5 has renamed this category as "Neurocognitive Disorders" (NCD), which now covers three entities: delirium, major NCD, and mild NCD. The DSM-IV version of mild NCD resembles the DSM-5 version in name only. DSM-IV defined mild NCD based on a single criterion, whereas DSM-5 defines mild NCD by using several cognitive and related cri

Barriers and facilitators to patient retention in HIV care.

BACKGROUND: Retention in HIV care improves survival and reduces the risk of HIV transmission to others. Multiple quantitative studies have described demographic and clinical characteristics associated with retention in HIV care. However, qualitative studies are needed to better understand barriers and facilitators. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 51 HIV-infected individuals, 25 who were retained in care and 26 not retained in care, from 3 urban clinics. Interview data were analyzed for themes using a modified grounded theory approach. Identified themes were compared be

Socioeconomic differences in antidepressant use in the PATH Through Life Study: evidence of health inequalities, prescribing bias, or an effective social safety net?

BACKGROUND: Depression is more common amongst those who are economically disadvantaged. However there is inconsistent evidence concerning the relationship between socioeconomic position and antidepressant use. Moreover, evidence of greater antidepressant use amongst those of lower socioeconomic position may reflect their greater psychiatric morbidity, a prescribing bias towards pharmacological treatments, or provide evidence of an effective social safety net. This study investigates these issues whilst addressing methodological limitations of earlier studies. METHOD: Data were from a large, r

Avatar therapy: where technology, symbols, culture, and connection collide.

The topic of "e-therapy" is of great research and clinical interest in 2012. This article presents a case study that examines several elements of psychotherapy, as administered in the "Second Life" virtual environment. In this case, psychotherapy took place primarily via text messaging between two avatars (client and therapist) who "sat" in a virtual office. The therapist resided in the United States and provided therapy to an individual from a developing nation who was currently residing in another more developed Middle Eastern country for work and to escape political atrocities being committ

Reality shock and mental resilience among adolescent police cadets: meaning, identity, and relational pathways in a Chinese police academy context.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent police cadets are trained in an institutional environment where schooling, collective discipline, physical training, peer living, and early occupational socialization are closely intertwined. This environment may provide structure and purpose, but may also expose cadets to a distinctive form of vocational environmental risk. However, the psychological pathways through which environmental risk and personal resources are linked to mental resilience in this population remain underexplored. METHODS: Drawing on an environmental risk and resilience framework, this cross-sec

Teaching psychiatry residents how to share pharmacotherapy decisions.

OBJECTIVE: Although the necessity of shared decision making (SDM) in mental health care is strongly advocated, the implementation of this approach is still far from optimal. One of the main reasons is the lack of proper training for mental health professionals. In this paper a newly developed SDM training program for psychiatry residents is evaluated as to whether it improves their communicative skills when discussing pharmacotherapy decisions with patients with severe mental health disorders. METHODS: The training program was based on the didactic model of Shared Steps and Checks (SSC). Comp

The quality of informed consent obtained for orthopedic surgeries-elective versus trauma: A prospective interview-based study.

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic surgeons routinely obtain informed consent prior to surgery. Legally adequate informed consent necessitates a thorough discussion of treatment options and risks and proper documentation. However, the quality of informed consent in orthopedic trauma patients is an under-researched area. PURPOSE: To assess the quality of the informed consent process in trauma compared with elective orthopedic patients and to assess patients' emotional state at the time of signing consent form. METHODS: Sixty-two consecutive patients undergoing either elective total joint arthroplasty ( N

ED Triage Decision-Making With Mental Health Presentations: A "Think Aloud" Study.

INTRODUCTION: Triage is the process whereby persons presenting to the emergency department are quickly assessed by a nurse and their need for care and service is prioritized. Research examining the care of persons presenting to emergency departments with psychiatric and mental health problems has shown that triage has often been cited as the most problematic aspect of the encounter. Three questions guided this investigation: Where do the decisions that triage nurses make fall on the intuitive versus analytic dimensions of decision making for mental health presentations in the emergency departm

[Locomotive syndrome and frailty. Frail elderly].

Frailty is a concept born in the mid 1980s, toward which a disease-oriented approach has turned to functional assessment. The domain of frailty contains the weakness of muscle strength, mental problems and social solitude. Fall is a good clinical indicator for the weakness of muscle strength as well as neuro-mental problems. Two topics in this review are; (1) Sex difference of hip fracture in relation with the sex difference of fall risks. Especially I will focus on the postural changes with osteoporosis as risks for falls. (2) Multiple geriatric conditions and brain white matter lesion. These
