Health education needs of pregnant women regarding newborn inborn errors of metabolism based on a social ecological model: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: This study explored pregnant women's perceptions, experiences, and health education needs regarding newborn inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) and newborn screening, and examined how these needs operate across individual, interpersonal/healthcare-organizational, and community/policy-environment levels. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative design was used. Fifteen pregnant women (N1-N15) were purposively recruited from one national regional medical center between October 2025 and January 2026 for one-to-one, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews lasting 30-45 min.

Barriers to opioid use disorder treatment among people who use drugs in the rural United States: A qualitative, multi-site study.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, 2.8 million people required substance use disorder (SUD) treatment in nonmetropolitan or 'rural' areas in the U.S. Among this population, only 10% received SUD treatment from a specialty facility, and 1 in 500 received medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). We explored the context surrounding barriers to SUD treatment in the rural United States. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews from 2018 to 2019 to assess barriers to SUD treatment among people who use drugs (PWUD) across seven rural U.S. study sites. Using the social-ecological model (SEM), w

Disseminating quality improvement: study protocol for a large cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Dissemination is a critical facet of implementing quality improvement in organizations. As a field, addiction treatment has produced effective interventions but disseminated them slowly and reached only a fraction of people needing treatment. This study investigates four methods of disseminating quality improvement (QI) to addiction treatment programs in the U.S. It is, to our knowledge, the largest study of organizational change ever conducted in healthcare. The trial seeks to determine the most cost-effective method of disseminating quality improvement in addiction treatment. ME

Innovative sanitation approaches could address multiple development challenges.

Globally, more than 60% of the human population live without safely managed sanitation services or even lack access to basic sanitation facilities. In addition, most of the wastewater produced in the world is discharged without proper treatment. Integrated approaches are needed to address these issues and curb the resulting adverse impacts on public health and the environment, and associated societal economic losses. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides an important framework towards more sustainable sanitation development, in terms of both safe sanitation access

Evaluating Short-Term Musculoskeletal Pain Changes in Desk-Based Workers Receiving a Workplace Sitting-Reduction Intervention.

This paper explores changes in musculoskeletal pain among desk-based workers over three months of a workplace-delivered, sitting-reduction intervention. Participants (n = 153, 46% female; mean ± SD aged 38.9 ± 8.0 years) were cluster-randomized (n = 18 work teams) to receive an organizational change intervention, with or without an activity tracker. A modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire assessed pain intensity (0⁻9; none⁻worst possible) in the neck, upper and lower back, upper and lower extremities, and in total. The activPAL3 (7 days, 24 h/day protocol) measured sitting and prolonge

The endocannabinoid system in critical neurodevelopmental periods: sex differences and neuropsychiatric implications.

This review focuses on the endocannabinoid system as a crucial player during critical periods of brain development, and how its disturbance either by early life stressful events or cannabis consumption may lead to important neuropsychiatric signs and symptoms. First we discuss the advantages and limitations of animal models within the framework of neuropsychiatric research and the crucial role of genetic and environmental factors for the establishment of vulnerable phenotypes. We are becoming aware of important sex differences that have emerged in relation to the psychobiology of cannabinoids.

[Health care seeking behavior of children in Togo].

Epidemiological and anthropological studies were carried out in Togo on health seeking behavior for under 5 children to determine causes of dysfunctions in health services. This article reports on the main findings of the anthropological study. Anthropological literature on health seeking behavior has identified labeling and associated explanatory models of illness as important factors for making choices in the use of health services. This study, carried out among 100 families in Togo on health seeking behavior for under-five children, found little difference in the signs and symptoms of illne

Multidisciplinary Management of Women Suffering from Migraine: Rationale, Design and Results of a National Delphi Consensus.

Background/Objectives: Migraine is a common, disabling neurological disorder disproportionately affecting women during hormonally sensitive phases like menarche, pregnancy, and menopause. Despite awareness of sex-specific risk factors, management remains fragmented and predominantly neurologist-led, with limited coordination. To address these gaps, this project aimed to develop a national expert consensus, endorsed by scientific societies, on multidisciplinary migraine management in women across the lifespan, integrating perspectives from neurology, gynecology, endocrinology, cardiology, and g

Occupational context as a moderator of leadership, safety climate, and operational safety behavior.

INTRODUCTION: A central challenge in high-risk organizations lies in understanding why safety and reliability vary across units that share the same rules, procedures, and mission. Whereas leadership and safety climate are established predictors of safety behavior, less is known about how occupational groups shape the interpretation of leadership signals and the enactment of operational safety behaviors. This study addresses that gap by testing a conceptual model in which leadership, safety climate, job stress, and resilience predict adherence to Standard Shipboard Operating Procedures (SSOP),

Contribution of Verbal Learning & Memory and Spectro-Temporal Discrimination to Speech Recognition in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Existing cochlear implant (CI) outcomes research demonstrates a high degree of variability in device effectiveness among experienced CI users. Increasing evidence suggests that verbal learning and memory (VL&M) may have an influence on speech recognition with CIs. This study examined the relations in CI users between visual measures of VL&M and speech recognition in a series of models that also incorporated spectro-temporal discrimination. Predictions were that (1) speech recognition would be associated with VL&M abilities and (2) VL&M would contribute to speech recognition outcome

Early prediction of cognitive deficits in very preterm infants using functional connectome data in an artificial neural network framework.

Investigation of the brain's functional connectome can improve our understanding of how an individual brain's organizational changes influence cognitive function and could result in improved individual risk stratification. Brain connectome studies in adults and older children have shown that abnormal network properties may be useful as discriminative features and have exploited machine learning models for early diagnosis in a variety of neurological conditions. However, analogous studies in neonates are rare and with limited significant findings. In this paper, we propose an artificial neural

HEARTS Accreditation: institutionalizing quality improvement of integrated cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic services in primary care.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the World Health Organization (WHO) Region of the Americas, with uncontrolled hypertension as the main modifiable risk factor. Their frequent coexistence with kidney and metabolic conditions creates an interconnected cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic burden and highlights gaps in prevention, detection, continuity, integration, and quality of care. HEARTS in the Americas is one of the largest regional implementations of the WHO's Global HEARTS initiative and a central platform for strengthening primary care. Building on the HEARTS qu

Techno-stress and teaching innovation among university teachers in the intelligent era: a path analysis of job burnout and AI self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: In the context of deep integration of intelligent technologies into educational practice, how to balance the pressure from technology application with the intrinsic demands of teaching innovation, has become an important issue. Job burnout reflects an individual's state of emotional exhaustion under long-term techno-stress, and AI self-efficacy indicates an individual's confidence in their ability to use AI tools. There is still a lack of a clear explanation for how the two are jointly related to the relationship between techno-stress and teaching innovation. Based on the Job Deman
