Sex differences in the associations between psychological symptoms and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels among obese and nonobese children aged 6-13 in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of associations between psychological symptoms and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α level is scant, as is evidence on sex differences in associations for children and adolescents with obesity. This study examined sex differences in associations between psychological symptoms (self-concept, anxiety, depression, anger, and disruptive behavior) and TNF-α level in Taiwanese children and adolescents with healthy weight, overweight, or obesity. METHODS: In 2010, 564 first, fourth, and seventh graders-comprising 250 children with overweight or obesity (44.3 %), 330 adolescents (58.

Psychological and Peer Difficulties of Children with Cleft Lip and/or Palate: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to determine if children born with cleft lip and/or palate are at increased risk of psychological and peer difficulties, and if so, which difficulties they develop. METHODS: EMBASE, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO were searched for English language studies published between January 2005 and January 2022 which investigated the psychological outcomes and peer function of children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate. Outcomes included internalizing problems, such as anxiety and depression, externalizing problems, such as hyperactivity, co

Changes in secondary outcomes associated with brief interventions for problem gambling in methadone patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) with problem gambling (PG) experience worse psychosocial outcomes than their non-PG counterparts. Interventions targeting PG in MMT may enhance psychosocial functioning beyond gambling reduction and abstinence. The present study was a secondary data analysis that examined the trajectories of non-gambling outcomes of three brief PG interventions (i.e., brief psychoeducation, brief advice, motivational enhancement therapy plus cognitive-behavioral therapy [MET + CBT]) among MMT patients. METHODS: Participants (N = 109) were engaged i

Videoconferencing psychological therapy and anxiety: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The growing worldwide prevalence of individuals with anxiety disorders has increased needs for mental health services. Due to limited number of mental health providers and community resources, especially in low-income countries, individuals often seek services from primary care settings. Through collaborative care models, services via telemedicine address the mental health provider shortage. While previous reviews show telemedicine effectively treats mental illness, a gap exists for reviews on videoconferencing psychological therapy for anxiety treatment. OBJECTIVE: This systemati

Typology of patients with behavioral addictions or eating disorders during a one-year period of care: Exploring similarities of trajectory using growth mixture modeling coupled with latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Addictions are not restricted to substance-use disorders, and it is now widely recognized that they also include behavioral addictions. Certain individuals with eating disorders also experiment their disorder as an addiction. The objective was to identify typologies of patients presenting with various behavioral addictions or eating disorders according to their evolution within the framework of care, and to specify the factors associated with the differential clinical trajectories. METHODS: We included 302 patients presenting with problem gambling, sexual addiction, compulsive buy

The Relationship Between Heart Rate Variability, Psychological Flexibility, and Pain in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Individuals with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) can experience chronic pain. Previous research has examined the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and persistent pain. HRV is an index of autonomic nervous system functioning, and reflects the variability in time elapsed between heartbeats. Patients with chronic pain tend to exhibit lower HRV, which has been associated with poor adaptability, or psychological flexibility, to stress. The aim of the current study was to examine relationships between HRV, psychological flexibility, and pain in a samp

Violent injury predicts poor psychological outcomes after traumatic injury in a hard-to-reach population: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: People who experience physical trauma face a range of psychosocial outcomes. These may be overlooked by busy clinicians. While some risk factors are understood, understanding of the psychological effects of violent injury remains limited, particularly in UK settings. This study compared psychological outcomes following interpersonal violence and accidental injury, including the persistence of psychological distress. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was carried out at two time points of patients admitted to a large teaching hospital in London between July 2012 and April 2014. Partic

The roles of emotion regulation and ruminative thoughts in non-suicidal self-injury.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored how cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, and facets of ruminative thinking could be brought together in a model to explain non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in the context of experiencing stressful life events and psychological distress. METHODS: Data from 2,507 participants aged 12-18 years (68% female, mean age 13.93 years) recruited from 40 Australian secondary schools were analysed, including 254 participants with a history of NSSI (72% female, mean age 14.21 years). Towards a neuropsychological model of lithium action.

Very few models exist to explain the mechanism of prophylactic action of lithium salts in a differentiated and comprehensive way. Our own efforts in the past were mainly directed at the mental and neurophysiological effects of lithium. In the present contribution, a psychological model is proposed, and it is discussed whether the psychological and the neurophysiological approaches can be combined with each other, or rather whether interfaces between them can be postulated. This psychological model was developed together with D. Kropf and defines "pathologic" and "normal" as two distinct qualit

Psychological Distress, Sleep Quality, and Overall Quality of Life Among Medical Students in a University Mind-Body Exercise Course: An Unlinked Repeated Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Psychological distress, poor sleep quality, and reduced quality of life commonly co-occur among medical students, yet their mutually adjusted relationships remain less well characterised within curriculum-based mind-body exercise settings. We examined whether these relationships were replicated across two unlinked survey waves and whether psychological distress and sleep quality remained associated with overall quality of life after mutual adjustment. Methods: An unlinked repeated cross-sectional study was embedded within a 12-week university Wuqinxi mind-body exercise c

Adaptive regulation over adversity: Noradrenergic scaling and psychological resources differentiate attentional performance.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity has been consistently associated with cognitive difficulties; however, marked heterogeneity in outcomes challenges deterministic models of risk. Emerging evidence suggests that current adaptive regulation may better explain cognitive and physiological functioning than adversity exposure alone. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether psychological risk-characterized by perceived stress, resilience, and protective factors-better predicts attentional performance and noradrenergic responsivity than childhood adversity exposure in individuals with high cumulative adversity.

How does the prevalence of alcohol use and associations with psychological distress differ across ethnic groups in England: A cross-sectional analysis of eight national surveys.

PURPOSE: Research on ethnic differences in alcohol use has relied on broad groupings, potentially obscuring patterns across specific ethnic groups. Single data sources often include few participants from minoritised ethnic groups, a meta-analytic approach across data sources can overcome this limitation. This study examined, by ethnicity, the prevalence of i) alcohol use and binge-drinking, and associations of ii) alcohol use and binge-drinking with psychological distress. METHODS: A secondary analysis of eight representative surveys in England (N=112,791) was conducted. Alcohol was assessed
