Septic bone, joint and muscle lesions associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Ten episodes of musculoskeletal sepsis have been seen in nine patients with HIV infection. Seven patients had AIDS, circulating CD4-positive lymphocyte counts being less than 0.1 x 10(9)/l in six. Septic arthritis recurred in seven patients, osteomyelitis in three and pyomyositis and bursitis each occurred in one patient. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from four patients, atypical micro-organisms being found in three. Presentation of musculoskeletal infection in this patient group may be atypical but rapid diagnosis is important as early antimicrobial therapy is often successful.

Acute Transverse Myelitis as an Uncommon Presentation of Neurobrucellosis: A Case Report.

Brucellosis mainly affects the musculoskeletal system with neurological manifestations observed in < 5% of all cases. This report outlines a unique case of neurobrucellosis that resulted in acute transverse myelitis (TM) with absent deep reflexes and negative Wright's reaction. In endemic regions, neurobrocellosis should be considered as a potential etiology of acute TM. Timely initiation of treatment is essential for optimizing clinical outcomes.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Periprosthetic Joint Infection after Hip Revision Arthroplasty.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, a well-established opportunistic bacterium, primarily impacts healthcare settings. Infection of the musculoskeletal system with this bacterium is rare. We report on the first known case of hip periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by S. maltophilia. The potential for development of a PJI caused by this pathogen should be considered by orthopaedic surgeons, particularly in patients with multiple severe comorbidities.

Physiological Implications, Performance Assessment and Risk Mitigation Strategies of Women in Combat-Centric Occupations.

Women have historically featured in military conflicts, but were not formally integrated into the military until the 20th century; occupations were mainly restricted to clerical or support roles. An increasing number of occupations have been opened to women and the higher physical demands of combat roles present new challenges. Inherent biological differences between sexes require women to work harder when undertaking the same tasks as men. This is reflected, in part, by the greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries of women observed notably during integrated military training. Gender "neutral"

Extended field of view sonography in musculoskeletal imaging.

The usage patterns and benefits of extended field of view sonography were analyzed prospectively in 100 consecutive musculoskeletal ultrasonographic examinations. Extended field of view sonography was used in 23 of 58 abnormal cases (10 of 41 shoulders, five of eight other joints, seven of seven extra-articular extremities, one of two interventional procedures) and two of 42 normal cases. Of 23 abnormal cases using extended field of view sonography (12 of 46 tendon tears and 11 of 12 fluid collections or masses), this modality helped in measuring abnormalities in 13, displaying abnormalities i

Multiple defects and perinatal death in mice deficient in follistatin.

Follistatin, an activin-binding protein and activin antagonist in vitro, can bind to heparan sulphate proteoglycans and may function in vivo to present activins to their receptors. In the mouse, follistatin messenger RNA is first detected in the deciduum (on embryonic day 5.5), and later in the developing hindbrain, somites, vibrissae, teeth, epidermis and muscle. In Xenopus laevis, overexpression of follistatin leads to induction of neural tissue. Here we use loss-of-function mutant mice to investigate the function of follistatin in mammals. We find that follistatin-deficient mice are retarde

Evaluation of the Ergomechanic Markerless Motion Capture System for Lower Body Kinematics During Standing, Squatting, and Walking.

Markerless motion capture (MMC) shows promise for examining human movement across many domains because of its nonintrusive nature and negligible per-subject setup time. However, published MMC systems typically require specific hardware. This validation study compared lower-body joint kinematics from Ergomechanic, a hardware-agnostic pose model-based MMC system, to an established marker-based motion capture (MBMC) system. Static trial data from eighteen people were used to register MMC keypoints within a widely used musculoskeletal model. The registered model was used to calculate joint kinemat

A multi-chamber tissue culture device for load-dependent parallel evaluation of tendon explants.

BACKGROUND: Injuries in the musculoskeletal system, such as tendon and ligament ruptures, are challenging to manage and often require surgical reconstructions with limited long-term success. Thus, characterizations of these tissues are urgently needed to better understand cellular mechanisms that regulate tissue homeostasis and healing. Explant culturing systems allow for ex vivo analysis of tissues in an environment that mimics the native microenvironment in vivo. METHODS: Collaborative efforts within our institution facilitated the establishment of a novel explant culturing system. Tissue s…

NeuroVisio SyncPatch: A Skin-Conformal Multimodal EMG-Motion Sensing Platform for Quantitative Neuromuscular Rehabilitation and Performance Monitoring.

Effective musculoskeletal rehabilitation requires simultaneous assessment of muscle activation and movement kinematics, yet no current system enables this at home. Laboratory motion capture systems provide accurate kinematics but require controlled environments, while portable inertial sensors enable home use at the cost of drift and incomplete joint angle resolution. Critically, neither approach provides direct physiological insight into the muscle activation driving functional movement. Here, we present NeuroVisio SyncPatch, a wearable multimodal platform that unifies conformal surface elect

Tips and tricks in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal interventional procedures.

Ultrasound visualization affords proceduralists versatile and accurate guidance for a variety of percutaneous, minimally invasive procedures in the musculoskeletal system including joint (intra-articular) injections or aspirations, intra-bursal injections, peritendinous, and perineural injections. A variety of percutaneous procedures are traditionally performed blindly, but may be more easily or more accurately performed with the real-time assistance of ultrasound guidance. Other procedures are only possible utilizing image-guidance, due to the required precision of the injection because of de…

Epidemiology of musculoskeletal injury in the tennis player.

Tennis is a popular sport with tens of millions of players participating worldwide. This popularity was one factor leading to the reappearance of tennis as a medal sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The volume of play, combined with the physical demands of the sports, can lead to injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Overall, injury incidence and prevalence in tennis has been reported in a number of investigations. The sport creates specific demands on the musculoskeletal system, with acute injuries, such as ankle sprains, being more frequent in the lower extremity whil…
