Mycobacterium abscessus complex and other non-tuberculous mycobacteria are infrequently encountered respiratory pathogens in patients with tracheostomies. We report a 4-year-old girl with a tracheostomy, placed during infancy for management of severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia and laryngeal stenosis, who developed a M. abscessus complex lung infection. There was clear evidence of parenchymal involvement and true infection beyond colonization. She demonstrated dramatic clinical, laboratory, and radiographic improvement after prolonged anti-mycobacterial therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of external quality assessment on the quality of drug susceptibility testing (DST) in clinical mycobacteriology laboratories.
DESIGN: A pilot evaluation of DST proficiency was conducted in 2006 and scaled up in 2007. A panel consisting of 20 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates was used. Accuracy of 95% in detecting resistance to both isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RMP), and 90% to both ethambutol (EMB) and streptomycin (SM), was used to define a competent laboratory.

We report a rare case of infective granulomatous prostatitis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that may be mistaken for prostatic carcinoma, both on clinical examination and transrectal sonography (TRUS). A large hypoechoic mass was detected in the prostate of a 46-year-old man during TRUS and histopathologic examination after TRUS-guided biopsies reported the diagnosis of tuberculous prostatitis. A 53-year-old man was hospitalized in April 2001 because of left cervical lymphadenopathy and a mass shadow in the left lingular segment. Bronchoscopy revealed an elevated lesion in the left main bronchus, but a biopsy showed no specific findings. A left cervical lymph node biopsy revealed lymphoid hyperplasia only and no malignancy.
