Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the uterus: clinical and pathologic review of 10 cases including a subset with aggressive clinical course.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is currently regarded as a neoplasm with intermediate biological potential and a wide anatomic distribution. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the female genital tract are rare, and to date reported cases behaved indolently. We describe, herein, 10 cases of uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, 3 of which had an aggressive clinical course. Subject age ranged from 29 to 73 years. Tumors were composed of spindle and epithelioid myofibroblastic cells admixed with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in a variably myxoid stroma. Two growth patterns, myxoid an

Omental mesenteric myxoid hamartoma, a subtype of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor? Considerations based on the histopathological evaluation of four cases.

Omental mesenteric myxoid hamartoma (OMH) is a distinctive myxoid lesion of infancy, characterized by a benign clinical behavior. In the current World Health Organization (WHO) classification of soft tissue tumors, it is considered as part of the morphologic spectrum of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT), but this relationship with IMT is still subject to debate. Four lesions with histologic features of OMH occurring in newborns and toddlers are described and compared with classic, ALK-positive IMT. All OMH showed a peculiar dot-like immunostaining for ALK, which, in one of the cases, w

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor within ileal intussusception as the cause of recurrent abdominal pain in a 57-year old patient.

The study presented a rare case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) in a 57-year old male patient who presented with recurrent abdominal pain. He was diagnosed to have a tumor of the small intestine within ileal intussusception, demonstrated by CT enterography. The patient underwent surgery to remove the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination results enabled to diagnose IMT. IMT is a rare tumor that occurs mainly in children and young adults. Its etiology remains to be fully understood. Due to the differentiated histology it can be

Congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor: case report of an asymptomatic infant with a rapidly enlarging pulmonary mass and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor (CPMT) is a rare, benign lung tumor of infants, with only 19 reported cases worldwide. It is often diagnosed by prenatal imaging or in the immediate postnatal period due to co-morbidities like polyhydramnios, fetal hydrops, respiratory distress, and heart failure. OBSERVATION: We report the oldest known infant (8 weeks old) diagnosed with CPMT, and present his clinical course including the relevant radiographic and histopathologic findings. CONCLUSIONS: CPMT is a rare tumor that should be considered among other primary lung tumors of

Successful treatment of recurrent pediatric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a single patient with a novel chemotherapeutic regimen containing celecoxib.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are rare tumors characterized as low-to-intermediate grade sarcomas. This is a case of a 7-year-old male with a 5-cm lung mass, which recurred 11 months after complete resection. The recurrence manifested as multifocal metastatic disease involving the ipsilateral parietal and visceral pleura. A novel chemotherapeutic regimen, which included vincristine, ifosfamide, doxorubicin, and celecoxib was utilized for the disease recurrence. The patient had complete and durable remission of the disease and has been disease-free for >4 years. This novel regimen includi

Etiology analysis and computed tomography imaging of a tonsillar inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor: report of an immunocompetent patient and brief review.

OBJECTIVES: The etiology of Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor(IMT) is contentious. In this study, we used computed tomography (CT) to examine tonsillar IMT and further analyzed the etiology of this entity. METHODOLOGY: We presented CT features of left tonsillar IMT and reviewed the English-language literature published between 1984 and 2011. RESULTS: To our knowledge, there are only six published cases of tonsillar IMT including the present case. Two patients were asymptomatic at initial presentation. Two patients were taking immunosuppressants, and one was pregnant and in an immunomodulate

Thy-1 expression, a possible marker of early myofibroblast development, in renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis induced in rats by cisplatin.

Interstitial fibrosis is regarded as the common final pathway in chronic renal failure. Myofibroblasts play an important role in the renal fibrosis through producing extracellular matrices. In addition to expressions of cytoskeletons such as vimentin, desmin and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), Thy-1 expression was investigated in cisplatin-induced rat renal interstitial fibrosis, to clarify the characteristics of myofibroblasts. Immunohistochemically, myofibroblasts in the renal fibrotic lesions reacted to vimentin, desmin and α-SMA in varying degrees, and the expression degrees were increased …

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor causing ileoileal intussusception: an unusual cause of an unusual neoplasm in an adult, with a clinicopathological review of the literature.

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the ileum is a very rare lesion of the gastrointestinal tract. A 36-year-old female presented with abdominal fullness and colicky pain of 5 days' duration. Plain abdominal radiography showed an intestinal obstruction with dilated jejunal loops. Abdominal computed tomography and ultrasonography demonstrated a well-defined intraluminal solid mass surrounded by the typical mural layers of an invaginated ileum. The patient then underwent an exploratory laparotomy under a clinical diagnosis of intussusception caused by a small bowel tumor. The surgical

Hedgehog pathway activation and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions during myofibroblastic transformation of rat hepatic cells in culture and cirrhosis.

Myofibroblastic hepatic stellate cells (MF-HSC) are derived from quiescent hepatic stellate cells (Q-HSC). Q-HSC express certain epithelial cell markers and have been reported to form junctional complexes similar to epithelial cells. We have shown that Hedgehog (Hh) signaling plays a key role in HSC growth. Because Hh ligands regulate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), we determined whether Q-HSC express EMT markers and then assessed whether these markers change as Q-HSC transition into MF-HSC and whether the process is modulated by Hh signaling. Q-HSC were isolated from healthy liver

Inflammatory pseudotumours of the urinary bladder in dogs resembling human myofibroblastic tumours: a report of eight cases and comparative pathology.

Eight cases of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMT) of the urinary bladder in dogs are described, including their clinical, imaging, morphological, and histopathological aspects. Old small breed female dogs were more commonly affected. Haematuria was the main clinical sign, often associated with dysuria and crystalluria. The IMT appeared as single or multiple, polypoid, firm masses, measuring 1-7 cm. Histologically, the masses were well delineated, covered by a benign hyperplastic urothelium and diffusely infiltrated by a mixed inflammatory component. The cells were spindle-shaped, adopt

Transdifferentiation of endothelial and renal tubular epithelial cells into myofibroblast-like cells under in vitro conditions: a morphological analysis.

BACKGROUND: The balance of the oxidative state in the body is fundamental for the maintenance of homeostasis. It has been implicated in the onset and progression of several diseases including breast cancer. The way in which the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) / antioxidants balance leads to or responds to disease is still controversial. In this study, TAC is used as a reference for the total antioxidant power of the body and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for its vital importance in cellular antioxidant action and being the only lipid soluble antioxidant synthesized endogenously. Copper and zinc were meas

Expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 and alpha-smooth muscle actin of myofibroblast in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps.

The pathophysiology of nasal polyps remains unclear, but recent work suggests that many cytokines are produced in nasal polyps (NPs) and that they may play various important roles in the pathogenesis of NPs. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), secreted by many inflammatory cells, is a potent inducer of myofibroblasts. Myofibroblasts express alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) and a source of extracellular matrix (ECM). In this study, we investigated a potential link between inflammation and the growth process in human NPs. Sixteen patients who were affected by NPs and who had und…
