We have tested some assay procedures for the measurement of beta 2-microglobulin, lysozyme, alpha 1-fetoprotein and myoglobin in serum and/or urine with the use of a manual Behring laser nephelometer. The assay working ranges were: beta 2-microglobulin: 0.0038-0.038 g/L; lysozyme: 0.005-0.325 g/L. We have studied the effect of different antiserum dilution ratios and of different concentrations of polyethylene glycol 6000 on the calibration curves. We studied renal opacification during intravenous urography in 20 rats subjected to glycerol-induced acute renal failure, with and without prior saline loading. Animals drinking saline suffered less severe renal impairment (mean plasma creatinine 175 mumol/l) than those drinking tap water (mean 341 mumol/l). Polymyositis (PM) is a rare heterogeneous group of disorders with frequent multisystem involvement including uncommon renal manifestations. Acute kidney injury (AKI) as the primary manifestation of PM is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of recurrent episodic AKI in an adult female who was subsequently diagnosed to have PM.

We encountered a female patient with left-leg compartment syndrome; a devastating complication, probably associated with prolonged dorsal lithotomy position during radical hysterectomy using intermittent pneumatic compression. This patient was intensively treated and fortunately recovered. However, leg compartment syndrome is poorly understood by gynecologists. We must always consider the potential risk of this life-threatening complication when patients are placed in the dorsal lithotomy position for a prolonged period during extended surgery using intermittent external compression.

Hepatic cryosurgery causes hepatocellular damage primarily by inducing the formation of ice crystals. Cell necrosis is enhanced using two or more freeze-thaw cycles. During a 12-month period, 42 patients required admission to hospital after sjambok beatings. Eighteen showed no abnormality of serum electrolyte values or renal function but urinary pigment precipitation was present in 9 patients. We report a case of nonketotic hyperosmolal state associated with rhabdomyolysis. None of the known predisposing factors for rhabdomyolysis, e.g. coma, potassium or phosphate depletion, were present in this patient. We propose that severe hyperosmolality per se may represent another predisposing factor for nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis.

Ten female beef calves weighing approximately 180 kg each were allotted to 2 groups of 5 each before they were given (orally) monensin (50 mg/kg of body weight). In group A, the calves were given (IM) a commercial selenium-vitamin E (Se-E) preparation (0.25 mg of Se and 17 IU of alpha-tocopherol/kg of body weight) at 72 and 24 hours before monensin was given.
