Twenty-one patients with invasive cutaneous malignant melanoma and 19 patients with basal cell skin cancer and 29 healthy volunteers were phototested on non-UV exposed buttock skin to examine their 24 h reaction to a series of increasing doses of simulated sunlight with 25% dose increments. After removal of epidermoid cysts from one side of the mandibular region, further cysts developed on the contralateral side in two patients. No evidence of basal cell naevomatosis was detected. The fact that the lesions recurred even though good cicatrization had been obtained, has to be emphasized. The dental germs, voluntarily left in place, developed in a fairly normal manner. Systematic pathological examination of such lesions would appear to be a valid procedure.

We report a patient who developed six different primary carcinomata over a period of 3 years. These were of sigmoid colon, left breast, left kidney, right breast and two basal cell carcinomata of her face. These were all excised and she remains well with no apparent metastases 5 years after her initial presentation. Although patients with multiple tumours are uncommon, recognition of such an occurrence is important to avoid attributing symptoms to metastases from a previously diagnosed tumour. Sequential primary tumours may be amenable to treatment.

Polycythemia vera (PV) is a clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorder resulting in overproduction of erythrocytes. Although interferon alfa (IFN-α) has shown therapeutic efficacy in PV and other myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), its precise mechanism of action remains poorly understood.
