Teratogenic and clastogenic effects of BUdR in mice.

Pregnant mice (C57B1/6JFfm) were treated with BUdR on day 9 of gestation. For doses ranging from 300 to 1,200 mg/kg b.w. of BUdR the teratogenic effect in near-term fetuses was analyzed. The findings confirm the phase and dose dependency of the induced malformations found by other authors. They also demonstrate, however, a BUdR-specific induction of special malformations. For a dose of 1,200 mg/kg of BUdR the effect on mitotic rates and the induction of chromosomal aberrations were investigated. Mitotic rates were counted in single organs as well as in total homogenized embryos. The methods ar

SedNet: A physics-informed operator-learning framework for rapid sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation analysis.

To date, analyzing data from sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation (SV-AUC) experiments has exclusively been performed using finite element method or other numerical solver-based techniques. These methods are slow, requiring repeated solving of the Lamm equation in order to obtain an accurate solution. In this paper, we demonstrate how the Lamm equation is alternatively solved accurately using machine learning's automatic differentiation by implementing it into the loss function of an inverse physics informed neural network (PINN). Subsequently, we confirm that by implementing

Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis Based on the EEG Analysis.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually hurts the central nervous system. By detecting and intervening in the early stage, AD patients could be prevented from memory loss and function decrease. Electroencephalography (EEG) is the recording of the brain's electric action, which reflects the activity of nervous in the brain. Recent studies showed that AD patients' brain action will change in the early stage, and EEG might become a potential marker for AD's early diagnosis. To record and analyze the abnormal transformation in the brain with EEG, researchers and engine

Vision-Based Detection of Low-Emission Sources in Suburban Areas Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

The paper discusses the problem of detecting emission sources in a low buildings area using unmanned aerial vehicles. The problem was analyzed, and methods of solving it were presented. Various data acquisition scenarios and their impact on the feasibility of the task were analyzed. A method for detecting smoke objects over buildings using stationary video sequences acquired with a drone in hover with the camera in the nadir position is proposed. The method uses differential frame information from stabilized video sequences and the YOLOv7 classifier. A convolutional network classifier was used

Factors in Infancy That May Predict Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The global increase in the prevalence of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is of great medical importance, but the reasons for this increase are still unknown. This study sought to identify possible early contributing factors in children who were later diagnosed with ASD. In this retrospective cohort study, postnatal records of 1105 children diagnosed with ASD were analyzed to determine if any signs of ASD could be found in a large database of births and well-baby care programs. We compared the recordings of typically developing children and analyzed the differences statistically. Rapid increases

Wearable RF Near-Field Cough Monitoring by Frequency-Time Deep Learning.

Coughing is a common symptom for many respiratory disorders, and can spread droplets of various sizes containing bacterial and viral pathogens. Mild coughs are usually overlooked in the early stage, not only because they are barely noticeable by the person and the people around, but also because the present recording method is not comfortable, private, or reliable for long-term monitoring. In this paper, a wearable radio-frequency (RF) sensor is presented to recognize the mild cough signal directly from the local trachea vibration characteristics, and can isolate interferences from nearby peop

Minireview: estrogen receptor-initiated mechanisms causal to mammalian reproductive behaviors.

While estrogen-facilitated changes in gene expression constitute some of the best-analyzed biochemical phenomena in the regulation of transcription, there have been at least two aspects of this topic that have led to much experimental work about estrogen actions on brain and behavior. The first task has required parsing various behavioral and neurochemical functions according to whether they depend on estrogen receptor-α or estrogen receptor-β. The second task has been the formulation of how nuclear actions of estrogens comport with membrane-initiated actions. With respect to these issues, app

A thalamo-cortical model of the executive attention system.

In a previous paper [Kilmer (1996) Neural Netw 9: 567-573] we developed a differential equation model of how a stable focus of attention could be maintained in a higher mammalian brain. The so-called TRC model consisted of interconnected modules, with each module comprised of a simple representations of parts of the reticular thalamic nucleus, specific thalamic nuclei, nonspecific thalamic nuclei, and cortex, together with the known excitatory and inhibitory interconnections between them. TRC was analyzed only for steady states under zero inputs. Here we analyze the behavior of TRC_2, a substa

Structural brain correlates in major depression, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder: A voxel-based morphometry meta-analysis.

The high comorbidity of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Anxiety Disorders (ANX), and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has hindered the study of their structural neural correlates. The authors analyzed specific and common grey matter volume (GMV) characteristics by comparing them with healthy controls (HC). The meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies showed unique GMV diminutions for each disorder (p < 0.05, corrected) and less robust smaller GMV across diagnostics (p < 0.01, uncorrected). Pairwise comparison between the disorders showed GMV differences in MDD versus ANX and

Proliferating cell populations in experimentally-induced hydrocephalus in developing rats.

To examine the fate of proliferating brain cells in hydrocephalus (Hydro), experimental Hydro was induced in neonatal rats by intracisternal injection of kaolin and, 3 weeks later, the rats were injected with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). The BrdU (+) cells were immunohistochemically analyzed by using antibodies against neural (nestin), neuronal (NeuN) and glial (GFAP and MBP) markers in the posterior cerebrum. The percentage of nestin expression for the BrdU (+) cells was 8% in control and increased from 17% in the Hydro to 33% in the Hydro at an earlier stage after the shunt procedure, but was r

Neuronal plasticity and regeneration in the olfactory system of mammals: morphological and functional recovery following olfactory bulb deafferentation.

The mammalian olfactory system has the unique property in the permanent turnover of the olfactory sensory neurons under normal conditions and following injury. This implies that the topographical map of the epithelium-to-bulb connections generated during ontogenesis has to be maintained despite neuron renewal in order to insure olfactory information processing. One way to investigate this issue has been to disrupt the peripheral connections and analyze how neural connections may be reestablished as well as how animals may perform in olfactory-mediated tasks. This review surveys the main data p

CNN sensor based motion capture system application in basketball training and injury prevention.

Basketball is a high-intensity sport, and sports injuries often occur. Therefore, how to monitor the sports status of basketball players in real time, discover and prevent the occurrence of sports injuries in time, has become an urgent problem for athletes and coaches. In this paper, a motion capture system based on CNN sensor is proposed. Through the application of sensor, real-time monitoring of athletes' motion state, the system can collect athletes' movement track, speed, acceleration, stride frequency, heart rate, energy consumption and other parameters in real time. By analyzing the move

[Research advances on the application of skin appendage organoids in wound repair].

Skin wounds are often accompanied by structural damage and functional loss of appendages such as hair follicles and sweat glands, which cannot be fully restored by conventional repair methods. The development of skin organoid technology provides a new avenue to overcome this bottleneck. This article reviews the developmental history of skin organoids and systematically elaborates on the strategies and applications of skin appendage organoids in promoting functional skin regeneration. Furthermore, it analyzes the critical role of vascular and neural integration in improving the quality of wound

Molecular Basis of Glia-ECM Interplay in Central Nervous System Homeostasis and Plasticity.

Interactions between glial cells and the central nervous system (CNS) extracellular matrix (ECM) maintain neural homeostasis and plasticity. In contrast to traditional reviews focusing on biochemistry, this work summarizes the structural and mechanical properties of major ECM subtypes, and illustrates how mechanical and biochemical signals jointly regulate glial activity via key mechanosensitive pathways. Glia in turn dynamically remodel ECM, forming a reciprocal regulatory network. This paper also analyzes characteristic mechanical disorders in Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and trau

Interspecies variations in eyeblink conditioning.

A central assumption in neuroscience is that learning mechanisms are conserved across species. Eyeblink conditioning, a cornerstone paradigm for studying associative learning and cerebellar function, has been widely used in humans and animal models alike. Yet direct cross-species comparisons remain rare. In this systematic review, we analyzed 484 eyeblink conditioning experiments reported in 271 studies spanning humans, rabbits, rats, mice, as well as individual studies in other species. Our findings reveal consistent interspecies differences in acquisition rates, timing parameters, and stimul

Electrocardiographic Patterns in Patients with Neurally Mediated Syncope.

The baseline electrocardiogram (ECG) is less informative in neurally mediated syncope (NMS) than in arrhythmic syncope. However, some of the ECG patterns present in NMS can have diagnostic and prognostic value in such patients. Electrocardiographic documentation of a syncopal spell and thus identification of the ECG changes can be performed during tilt table test (TTT) or during prolonged ECG monitoring. This work reviews the specific ECG patterns in NMS, which are primarily related to the cardioinhibitory reflex. In addition, there are other ECG findings present in patients with NMS that are

The neural basis of combinatory syntax and semantics.

Human language allows us to create an infinitude of ideas from a finite set of basic building blocks. What is the neurobiology of this combinatory system? Research has begun to dissect the neural basis of natural language syntax and semantics by analyzing the basics of meaning composition, such as two-word phrases. This work has revealed a system of composition that involves rapidly peaking activity in the left anterior temporal lobe and later engagement of the medial prefrontal cortex. Both brain regions show evidence of shared processing between comprehension and production, as well as betwe

TALEN-mediated mutagenesis in zebrafish reveals a role for r-spondin 2 in fin ray and vertebral development.

R-spondin (Rspo) encodes a multi-domain protein that modulates the Wnt-signaling pathway. Two distinct rspo2 zebrafish mutants were generated by TALEN-mediated mutagenesis: a null mutant, rspo2(null), lacking all functional domains, and a hypomorphic mutant, rspo2(tsp), lacking the two N-terminal domains. Mutants were analyzed mainly for abnormalities in the skeletal system. Fin ray skeletons were formed normally in the rspo2(tsp) mutants, but were absent from the rspo2(null) mutants. Hypoplasia of the neural/hemal arches and ribs was observed in both mutants. Thus, the two rspo2 mutants help
