Contralateral suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions: effect of the primary frequency in Dpgrams.

The amplitude of the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) can be suppressed by presenting contralateral acoustic stimulation. To test the hypothesis that DPOAE contralateral suppression is influenced by the primary frequency in DPgrams, DPgrams were recorded at resolutions of 1, 8, and 17 pts/octave, in the absence and presence of contralateral broadband noise (BBN). Participants were 20 normal-hearing human adults. In DPgrams with higher frequency resolutions, DPOAE suppression at amplitude peaks in DPgrams (8 pts/octave: Mean = - 0.92 dB, SD = 0.71 for BBN at 60 dB SPL; 17

Effect of propofol anesthesia on pallidal neuronal discharges in generalized dystonia.

We present the results of continuous microelectrode recordings from individual pallidal neurons in patients with idiopathic torsion dystonia under different levels of propofol anesthesia. Neither the estimated plasma concentration of propofol nor the level of consciousness had a consistent effect on abnormally low neuronal firing rates. Our data support the pathophysiological model of a decreased basal ganglia output in dystonia and argue against a possible pharmacological artifact.

Stimulation of the nucleus locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus suppresses visceromotor responses to colorectal distention in the rat.

The aim of the present study was to examine whether the nucleus locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus (LC/SC) modulates visceromotor function. In the present study, an electromyogram (EMG) of the external abdominal oblique muscle evoked by colorectal distention was measured as a visceromotor reflex response, and inhibitory effects of LC/SC stimulation were estimated by the decrease of EMG activity. Under halothane anesthesia (1% in air), graded colorectal distentions (30, 60 or 80 mmHg) were produced by inflating a balloon inside the descending colon and rectum. A bipolar EMG electrode was inserted int

Identification and functional evidence of GABAergic neurons in parts of the brain of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The distribution of GABA-containing neurons was studied in the brain of the adult zebrafish by Nissl staining and immunohistochemistry. GABA immunoreactivity (GABA-IR) was demonstrated in parts of the brain such as olfactory bulb (OB), telencephalon, tectum stratum, and in the hypothalamus. GABA-IR appeared in the area where Nissl-stained cell bodies were abundant. The internal cellular layer of the OB was most densely stained by Nissl staining, and also showed a high level of GABA-IR. The telencephalon and the hypothalamus revealed a similar pattern to the OB in terms of Nissl staining and GA

Influence of the entorhinal cortex on accumbal and striatal dopaminergic responses in a latent inhibition paradigm.

The use of latent inhibition paradigms is one means of investigating the involvement of mesencephalic dopaminergic (DA) neurons in cognitive processes. We have shown recently that DA neurons reaching the core and the dorsomedial shell parts of the nucleus accumbens and the anterior part of the striatum are differentially involved in latent inhibition. In other respects, theoretical, behavioral and anatomo-functional data suggest that the entorhinal cortex (ENT) may control latent inhibition expression. In this study, using in vivo voltammetry in freely moving rats, we investigated the influenc

[GABA-B-associated neuropsychiatric disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Disturbed GABA-B mediated inhibitory cortical processes are discussed to be involved both in schizophrenia as well as in chronic tinnitus. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) provides an intriguing in vivo method to investigate GABA-B associated aspects of cortical inhibition, thus allowing to detect disease-related cortical inhibitory processes. METHOD: Parameters of cortical excitability were measured by TMS in drug-naive first-episode schizophrenic patients and in patients suffering from chronic tinnitus. RESULTS: The cortical silent period as measured by TMS indicated a dy

Defining eupnea.

To describe a pattern of rhythmic activity as "breathing" or "respiration" inevitably leads to the conclusion that this rhythmic activity is "normal" or "eupneic". Initially, it must be noted that, by strictest definition, "eupnea" can only be applied to "breathing" in an unanesthetized preparation. Any experimental perturbation, including anesthesia, changes eupnea, primarily by reducing the frequency of "breathing". However, a "eupneic pattern", in terms of the pattern of airflow of individual breaths, remains. Also remaining are patterns of neural and neuronal activities which are character

Abnormalities of cortical excitability and cortical inhibition in cervical dystonia Evidence from somatosensory evoked potentials and paired transcranial magnetic stimulation recordings.

Cortical excitability and cortico-cortical inhibition were examined in twenty-one patients suffering from idiopathic rotational cervical dystonia. Polymyography of cervical muscles, somatosensory evoked potential recordings, and paired transcranial magnetic stimulation were used to assess the dystonic disorder. The results were compared with those obtained in a group of sixteen healthy age-matched volunteers. Statistically significant differences between the patient group and the control group were found when the amplitude values of the mean P22/N30 component measured at F [3, 4] and C[3, 4]'

Prolonged surges of baroreflex-resistant muscle sympathetic drive during periodic breathing.

We report unusual muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in patients with Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR), one suffering congestive heart failure (CHF) and three with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). MSNA was recorded via a tungsten microelectrode in the peroneal nerve. Our index patient had severe CHF (LVEF 15%) and showed typical MSNA for this condition, with large sympathetic bursts occurring with every heart beat. However, superimposed on this pattern appeared broad surges of increased MSNA which lasted for 6-8 cardiac intervals. Although the cardiac rhythmicity of MSNA was prese

The stimulus intensity modifies the blink reflex recovery cycle in healthy subjects and in blepharospasm.

OBJECTIVE: The excitability of human brainstem interneurons is measured by the blink reflex recovery cycle and is abnormal in blepharospasm. We wondered whether the results of this paradigm depend on the stimulus intensity. METHODS: We investigated the blink reflex recovery cycle in 13 healthy control subjects and in 13 patients with blepharospasm (7 of them treated with botulinum toxin) using 4 levels of stimulus intensity (5, 12, 19 and 26 mA) and two interstimulus intervals (ISIs, 150 or 250 ms). RESULTS: In all groups the inhibition of the second R2 response was reduced with strong stimu

Absence of transcallosal inhibition in adolescents with diplegic cerebral palsy.

The role of intracortical organization in the pathophysiology of cerebral palsy (CP) is not clear. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate the paradigm of transcallosal inhibition (TI) in a group of adolescent patients with diplegic CP (n = 4), hereditary spastic paraplegia (n = 2), and healthy control adolescents (n = 4). None of the patients with CP showed TI, whereas all other subjects had normal TI. These findings indicate a lack of inhibitory control of the motor cortex in CP.

Interstitial cells of Cajal mediate enteric inhibitory neurotransmission in the lower esophageal and pyloric sphincters.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Previous studies have suggested that a specific class of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) act as mediators in nitrergic inhibitory neurotransmission. The aim of this investigation was to examine the role of intramuscular ICC (IC-IM) in neurotransmission in the murine lower esophageal (LES) and pyloric sphincters (PS). METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and electrophysiology were used to study the distribution and role of IC-IM. RESULTS: The LES and PS contain spindle-shaped IC-IM, which form close relationships with nitric oxide synthase-containing nerve fibers. The PS contain

[A study of magnetic stimulation in patients with clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration].

Magnetic stimulation (MS) was performed in 9 patients with clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration (CBD), 10 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) (under L-dopa therapy) and 10 age-matched healthy subjects (HS). Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis muscle (APB) in response to cortical stimulation and cervical stimulation (C7). In all patients with CBD, the duration of inhibitory period (IP), which was a transient suppression of muscle action potentials following MEPs by cortical stimulation, was significantly shorter than that in PD and HS. In

A- and C-reflexes elicited in cardiac sympathetic nerves by single shock to a somatic afferent nerve include spinal and supraspinal components in anesthetized rats.

The spinal and supraspinal components of both A- and C-reflexes were studied in the somato-cardiac sympathetic reflex discharges elicited by a single electrical shock either to a spinal (T3-4) afferent nerve or to a limb (tibial) afferent nerve in urethane anesthetized rats. In central nervous system (CNS) intact rats, a single shock to a T3-4 spinal afferent nerve produced early and late A-reflex discharges with latencies of 20 +/- 1 ms and 62 +/- 6 ms, respectively, and a C-reflex with a latency of 136 +/- 9 ms in a cardiac sympathetic efferent nerve. After spinalization at the first cervica

Relationship between changes of glomus cell current and neural response of rat carotid body.

1. Mature rat carotid bodies were harvested and sinus nerve activity was recorded in vitro during superfusion with Ringer saline. Membrane currents of glomus cells were simultaneously recorded using conventional whole cell or perforated-patch whole cell recording. Presumptive glomus cells were identified by the presence of a rapidly activated, voltage-dependent outward current above a threshold of -20 mV. 2. Outward current of presumptive glomus cells was inhibited by tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) (20 mM) and by verapamil (5-10 microM), consistent with previous studies in which isolated gl

A rhythmic modulatory gating system in the stomatogastric nervous system of Homarus gammarus. I. Pyloric-related neurons in the commissural ganglia.

1. Operation of the pyloric neural network in the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion (STG) depends on constant firing of modulatory inputs from anterior ganglia. We have identified two bilaterally symmetrical pairs of these inputs in the commissural ganglia (COGs) of the European rock lobster Homarus gammarus. During operation of the pyloric CPG, they fired in pyloric time, out of phase with the pyloric pacemakers. 2. One of the pair was the commissural pyloric (CP) neuron and the other was homologous to the P neuron described in the spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus. We describe their morph

The immediate effects of peripheral denervation on inhibitory mechanisms in the somatosensory thalamus.

Multiunit recordings were made in the ventroposterior lateral nucleus of the thalamus in anesthetized raccoons. During recording from cells responding to cutaneous stimulation of a forepaw digit, the corresponding digit was denervated permanently (by cutting its four digital nerves) or temporarily (by injecting lidocaine into the base of the digit). Both procedures resulted in immediate increases in the inhibition that could be induced by stimulation of the adjacent digits when the original cutaneous receptive field was on the glabrous skin. In each case with temporary denervation, this enhanc

Excitotoxicity and alcohol-related brain damage.

Hyperexcitability following chronic alcohol exposure appears to result in enhanced activation of glutamatergic synapses in the brain. This enhanced glutamatergic transmission probably results from a combination of increased NMDA receptor activation, decreased GABAA receptor activation and increased function of voltage-activated calcium channels. Prolonged or repetitive bouts of enhanced excitatory transmission during withdrawal may destroy central neurons via "excitotoxic" mechanisms. Increased NMDA receptor activation might initiate toxicity by increasing intracellular calcium. Summation of t

GABA-mediated inhibition of locus coeruleus from the dorsomedial rostral medulla.

Recent anatomic studies in our laboratory (Aston-Jones et al., 1986) identified the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi (PrH) in the dorsomedial medulla as a major afferent of the locus coeruleus (LC). In the present studies, the influence of projections from PrH to LC was assessed in anesthetized rats. Focal electrical stimulation of PrH inhibited the spontaneous discharge of 42 of 47 LC neurons; the latency to onset of such inhibition was 19.8 +/- 2.5 msec and its duration was 172.4 +/- 10.4 msec. PrH-evoked inhibition of LC neurons was unaffected by administration of the opiate receptor antagonis
