Health literacy: concept analysis.

AIM: This paper reports an analysis of the concept of health literacy in order to clarify its meaning, reduce ambiguities associated with references to it, and promote consistency in using the concept in nursing dialogue and research. BACKGROUND: Health literacy is a relatively new concept in health promotion research. Only within the last decade have researchers identified the problems associated with health literacy, the role it plays in an individual's ability to comprehend health and self-care information, and its relationship to health outcomes. Clarifying the concept is essential so tha

Loneliness Among Adults Aging With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: The Importance of Living Situation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is a serious public health concern among the aging population. Not only is loneliness an unpleasant emotional experience but it is also associated with worse health, well-being, and even mortality. This is a particularly important issue among the population aging with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who are more likely to experience loneliness across the life course, and who-particularly if living in an intermediate care facility (ICF) or nursing facility-may lack social connections. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2012

Advancing neurological disease treatment: a computational approach for fibroblast growth factor detection.

CONTEXT: Informal caregiving within rural contexts in Canada is increasing. This is due in part to a number of factors related to the restructuring of the Canadian health care system, the regionalization of services to urban locations, the increased population of people 65 years and older, and the desire of this population to age within their rural homes. Most often, the informal caregiving role is assumed by rural women. Women tend to fall into the role of informal caregiver to elders because of the many societal and gender expectations and values that are present within the rural culture. Th

The Mental Health Effects of Cumulative Lifetime Violence in Men: Disruptions in the Capacity to Connect with Others and Finding Ways to Reengage.

We report qualitative findings of our Men's Violence Gender and Health Study, a multiple method study using a sequential design in which we explored the mental health manifestations of cumulative lifetime violence in men. Survey results revealed that higher cumulative lifetime violence scores were significantly associated with higher scores on depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety in a community sample of men (n = 685) living in Eastern Canada. To obtain a deeper understanding of men's scores, we used an interpretive description approach to analyze data derived from 32 partic

Addressing inequities in maternal health through postpartum nurse home visiting: a mixed methods evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The First Five Yolo Welcome Baby (WB) program, initiated in 2021, is a nurse home visiting initiative funded by local and federal dollars. It aims to address postpartum health in low-income, uninsured, or Medi-Cal insured families in Yolo County, California. Amid persisting inequities in maternal health, especially in low-income and historically marginalized communities, WB was designed to overcome barriers to postpartum care access and provide essential support for social, emotional, and physical wellbeing for mothers and their families. The purpose of this study was to evaluate t

Improving the delivery of prenatal care and outcomes of pregnancy: a randomized trial of nurse home visitation.

We evaluated a comprehensive program of prenatal and postpartum nurse home visitation. The program was designed to prevent a wide range of health and developmental problems in children born to primiparous women who were either teenagers, unmarried, or of low socioeconomic status. During pregnancy, women who were visited by nurses, compared with women randomly assigned to comparison groups, became aware of more community services; attended childbirth classes more frequently; made more extensive use of the nutritional supplementation program for women, infants, and children; made greater dietary

Essentials of environmental health. Enhancing your occupational health nursing practice (Part I).

1. The environment is a primary determinant of health status of individuals and communities. Environmental hazards are widespread and poorly understood. 2. The five parameters of exposure pathways for environmental hazards include source of contamination; environmental media and transport mechanism; point of exposure; route of exposure; and receptor population. Routes of exposure to environmental hazards include percutaneous (dermal); inhalation; ingestion, gastrointestinal tract; and transplacental. 3. Humans vary widely in their susceptibility to potential environmental hazards. The human re

Barriers to the National Onchocerciasis Control Programme at operational level in Cameroon: a qualitative assessment of stakeholders' views.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of onchocerciasis is the heaviest in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies have shown the importance of the role of Community-Directed Distributors (CDDs) and nurses in onchocerciasis control, but little is known about their experience in implementing onchocerciasis control programmes. Our aim was to document the barriers that CDDs and local health administrators face in implementing onchocerciasis control activities. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative survey consisting of 16 in-depth interviews and 8 focus group discussions (FGDs) across three health districts of Cameroo

Remote health workforce turnover and retention: what are the policy and practice priorities?

BACKGROUND: Residents of remote communities in Australia and other geographically large countries have comparatively poorer access to high-quality primary health care. To inform ongoing policy development and practice in relation to remote area health service delivery, particularly in remote Indigenous communities, this review synthesizes the key findings of (1) a comprehensive study of workforce turnover and retention in remote Northern Territory (NT) of Australia and (2) a narrative review of relevant international literature on remote and rural health workforce retention strategies. This sy

Clinical unity and community empowerment: the use of smartphone technology to empower community management of chronic venous ulcers through the support of a tertiary unit.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ulcers affect roughly 60,000 Irish people, at a total cost of €600,000,000, or €10,000 per patient annually. By virtue of their chronicity, these ulcers also contribute a significant burden to tertiary outpatient vascular clinics. OBJECTIVE: We propose utilizing mobile phone technology to decentralise care from tertiary centres to the community, improving efficiency and patient satisfaction, while maintaining patient safety. METHODS: Bespoke mobile software was developed for Apples iPhone 4 platform. This allowed for the remote collection of patient images prospectively a

Nurses' experiences of end-of-life communication with children who have life-threatening conditions in paediatric intensive care units: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Effective communication is critically important for providing child- and family-centred care. This approach puts children and their parents at the centre of the nursing care and decision-making processes. However, there are limited studies from a cultural perspective from low- and middle-income countries like Türkiye on how nurses approach end-of-life conversations with children. This study aims to explore nurses’ experiences of end-of-life communication with children who have life-threatening conditions in paediatric intensive care units. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study w

Presbycusis and its management.

Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, is becoming a public health issue. With the large number of ageing baby boomers, primary care providers can expect to see an increase in older adults suffering from chronic health problems such as presbycusis. It is the primary care provider's responsibility to perform prompt auditory screenings and to recognize the early clinical signs and symptoms of hearing loss. Early interventions, such as hearing aids or surgery, could help to improve the client's quality of life. Primary care providers should also teach older adults proper auditory hygiene, and

Changes in Frailty Status and Functional Capacity Following a Community-Based Nursing-Led Intervention in Older Women: An Exploratory Uncontrolled Pre-Post Study.

Background/Objectives: Frailty is a common geriatric syndrome associated with functional decline, dependency, and adverse health outcomes in older adults. Community-based nursing interventions may help prevent or delay frailty by promoting physical activity, health education, and self-care. This exploratory study aimed to describe pre-post changes in frailty status and functional capacity following a community-based nursing intervention among community-dwelling older women. Methods: An exploratory uncontrolled pre-post study was conducted in Spain. Of 35 community-dwelling, non-institutionaliz
