Organ damage caused by iron overload has been mostly attributed to iron-induced peroxidation of membrane lipids. Using the ferrocene iron-loaded rat model, we studied ethane exhalation as a direct marker of in vivo lipid peroxidation, as well as concentrations of alpha-tocopherol and ubiquinol 9/10 in liver and plasma as indirect markers of this process. We investigated the pharmacokinetics of desferrioxamine and its chelated compounds aluminoxamine and ferrioxamine in normal volunteers and haemodialysis patients with and without iron overload. Iron-deficient female Wistar rats were fed a diet, which contained 0.5% trimethylhexanoylferrocene, over a 56-week period. This dietary iron loading resulted in a progressive siderosis and enlargement of the liver with a maximum iron content of 947.0 +/- 148.0 mg (vs. 0.07 +/- 0.04 mg in iron deficiency) and a maximum organ weight of 39.4 +/- 6.6 g (vs. 6.9 +/- 1.4 g in iron-deficient control rats). The synthesis and characterization of several Cr(III) complexes of the constrained macrocyclic ligand 1,4-C(2)-cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazabicyclo[10.2.2]hexadecane is reported. The ligand appears to form only trans complexes, and the structure of trans-[Cr(1,4-C(2)-cyclam)Cl(2)]PF(6) is presented. Scintigraphic methods for liquid and solid gastric emptying were utilised to study normal patterns in 21 volunteers. Of these, 19 had solid emptying studies and 14 had liquid emptying studies. The liquid study lasted 1/2 hour, while the solid study was for 1 hour. The gastric emptying half-time (T 1/2), as well as percentage retention at 15 minutes (liquids), and at 60 minutes (for solids) were noted. The time-activity curves were also corrected for tissue attenuation. Results indicated normal average liquid emptying T 1/2 to be 14.2 minutes, while that for solids was 116 minutes.

A dual-emission, ratiometric fluorescence sensor is reported based on a europium(III)-doped metal-organic framework (Eu/DUT-52) that exhibits blue emission from DUT-52 and red emission from Eu³⁺.
