BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is an extremely rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a category of hematologic disorders charac … ysuria, and nocturia over two years. Imaging revealed a mass in the right lateral ventricle, patchy osteosclerosis of the tibial epiphyses, and bilateral cerebellar white matter lesions showing the "crab sign" (central cavitation within the dentate nuclei on Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) sequences). The ventricular mass was surgically resected. His …

Minera … n favor of skeletal fluorosis were noted, including interosseous membrane calcification (14.6%) and osteosclerosis (7.3%). Logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and biochemical markers found that bone types did not predict differences in the prevalence of bone disease between early and late stage CKDu. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the correlation between clinical dysfunction index (Di) and condylar bony changes, glenoid fossa bony changes and joint space changes.
METHODS: Clinical data and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 240 patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) were analyzed. The patients were assigned a score of Helkimo's clinical Di ranging from 1 to 25 and thereafter divided into 3 groups by the degree of Helkimo's Di. The condylar bony changes observed with CBCT were graded by the classification method of Koyama et al. Glenoid fossa bony changes and

PURPOSE: To describe the imaging features of POEMS, and to compare our experience of 8 cases to a review of literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 8 patients (6 men, 2 women) with POEMS. Plain radiographs (8 patients), CT (6), MR (2) were performed.
RESULTS: Topographic localizations of POEMS were pelvis (7 cases), spine (5), femur (1), humerus (1), rib cage (1). Focal bone lesions, multiple (5 cases) or solitary (3 cases), were sclerotic in 4 cases, mixed lytic-sclerotic (lytic center and sclerotic rim) in 3 cases and one patient had an osteolytic lesion with s

A 22-year-old woman had a Tc-99m MDP whole-body scan for low back pain. A focal area of increased activity was seen in the skull base in the region of the sella turcica. A computed tomographic examination showed ground-glass opacification of the sphenoid sinus and bony sclerosis along its walls, characteristic of fibrous dysplasia. Monostotic fibrous dysplasia, the more common form compared with the polyostotic variety, occurs in 70% to 80% of all patients with fibrous dysplasia. Monostotic lesions usually involve the ribs, femur, tibia, cranium, maxilla, and mandible. The frontal and sphenoid

BACKGROUND: Osteoma of the skull and facial bones is not uncommon, is usually asymptomatic, and may be associated with Gardner's syndrome. Osteomas involving other bones are unusual.
METHODS: The authors describe 14 cases (eight men and six women from age 21-66 years) of parosteal osteoma of bones other than of the skull and face.
RESULTS: Thirteen lesions involved long bones, and one involved the clavicle. A long-standing (18 months to 31 years) mass was reported in seven patients. Symptoms of pain, a mass, or both were present in all except three patients who were asymptomatic. Lesions ran

The metastasis of tumor cells to bone can lead to osteolytic and osteosclerotic lesions, which cause severe, highly-localized bone destruction and abnormal bone apposition, respectively. Accurate quantification of lesion progression is critical to understand underlying mechanisms and assess treatment efficacy; however, standard structural parameters may be insensitive to local changes. We developed methods to quantify osteolytic and osteosclerotic lesions using micro-computed tomography (μCT) within in vivo mouse datasets. Two Balb/c nude datasets were used: (i) bone-homing MDA-MB-231 (osteoly

Protein phosphorylation is a nearly universal post-translation modification involved in a plethora of cellular events. Even though phosphorylation of extracellular proteins had been observed, the identity of the kinases that phosphorylate secreted proteins remained a mystery until only recently. Advances in genome sequencing and genetic studies have paved the way for the discovery of a new class of kinases that localize within the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and the extracellular space. These novel kinases phosphorylate proteins and proteoglycans in the secretory pathway and appear

PURPOSE: Several publications have reported that the apparent diffusion coefficient is generally lower in metastatically affected vertebrae. Therefore, metastases are represented in diffusion-weighted images by increased signal intensity in comparison to unaffected vertebrae. However, there were indications that metastases due to prostate cancer may differ from this. Therefore, the contrast behavior of vertebral metastases due to prostate cancer or tumors with another histology are to be systematically studied using diffusion-weighted images. The present study is intended to examine whether th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sclerosing bone dysplasias are rare genetic disorders of bone remodeling in which excessive bone formation takes place, resulting in encroachment on neural structures. The infant usually appears normal at birth, and the first sign of a problem only comes when a neurologic deficit develops, usually in the form of an acute facial palsy. Although less than 300 cases have been published, these conditions should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of facial nerve palsy, especially in children.
RECENT FINDINGS: This review highlights the neurologic presentation and

We report the case of a 23-month-old male with hypotonia, developmental delay, and complex seizures. Radiographs revealed profound sclerosis of the metaphyses and epiphyses of the long and short bones in the extremities, with a unique pattern of distribution. Sclerosis also involved the anterior ribs, iliac crests, talus, and calcaneus. The skull and vertebral bodies appeared unaffected. Blood lead levels were normal. We believe that this constellation of clinical and radiographic abnormalities closely resembles osteosclerotic metaphyseal dysplasia (OMD) due to an autosomal recessive defect. C
