Pleomorphic adenoma originally called the mixed tumour is a neoplasm commonly involving major salivary glands. The spectrum of malignancy in pleomorphic adenoma comprises three distinct entities - Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, carcinosarcoma and benign metastasising pleomorphic adenoma. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma consists of pleomorphic adenoma with a malignant epithelial component. Occasionally, carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenoma develops metastasis. Here we are reporting here a case of benign pleomorphic adenoma arising in parotid gland which turned into malignancy after four years.

BACKGROUND: Hailey-Hailey Disease (HHD) is an autosomal dominant skin disorder that is characterized by erythematous and sometimes vesicular, weeping plaques of intertriginous regions. Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma arising in lesions of HHD have been described in the literature. To our knowledge, there are no reports of melanoma or noncutaneous malignant neoplasms associated with HHD.
OBSERVATIONS: We discuss the mechanisms of oncogenicity, including genetic, environmental, and iatrogenic factors, in 2 patients with HHD, multiple primary melanomas, and other cancers. Patien

Predicting radiation damage to specific organs is becoming ever more challenging with the use of intensity-modulated beams, nonuniform dose distributions, partial organ irradiation, and interpatient and even intraorgan variations in radiation sensitivity. Data-based physical models can be of use in summarizing complicated dose-volume data to help describe clinical outcomes and ultimately aid in the prediction of clinical toxicity. This article attempts to provide a brief overview of the use of normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models and other simple dose/volume metrics to describe

Seven children were followed for up to 42 days post-vaccination with live mumps vaccine and 37 throat swabs were obtained serially. Viral genomic RNA was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the phosphoprotein (P) and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) regions. Virus isolation was also attempted. Genomic differentiation of detected mumps virus genome was performed by sequence analysis and/or restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). No adverse reaction was observed in these children. Although mumps virus was not isolated from any of the samples, viral RN

The presence of myoepithelial cells in salivary glands is of importance with regard to tumour histogenesis, yet there is no consensus in the literature as to the specific location of these cells. A major problem has been the methods of precise identification of myoepithelium at the light microscopic level. The present study therefore reviews the distribution of myoepithelial cells in the major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular and sublingual) of the human, utilising a monoclonal antibody specific to actin, a cytoplasmic component of the myoepithelial cell. Qualitative analysis was perfor

OBJECTIVES: Salivary glands are useful target organs for local and systemic gene therapeutics. For such applications, the regulation of transgene expression is important. Previous studies by us in murine submandibular glands showed that a rapamycin transcriptional regulation system in a single serotype 2, adeno-associated viral (AAV2) vector was effective for this purpose. This study evaluated if such a vector was similarly useful in rhesus macaque parotid glands.
METHODS: A recombinant AAV2 vector (AAV-TF-RhEpo-2.3w), encoding rhesus erythropoietin (RhEpo) and a rapamycin-inducible promoter,

OBJECTIVES: Xerostomia toxicity continues to contribute towards a decrease in quality of life in head and neck cancer patients. Diffusion weighted MRI and the associated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) may identify the radiosensitive region within the parotid gland (PG). This study retrospectively assesses the feasibility of using percentile threshold values from the ADC map to generate a biological at-risk volume (BRV). The location and distribution of BRV are evaluated across the PG.
METHODS: Image registration between the planning CT and MRI-simulation images was performed and reviewe

OBJECTIVES: Cancer therapy including chemotherapy causes gland atrophy, resulting in low salivary secretion in cancer patients. Since saliva plays an important role in oral health, the dysfunction may exacerbate oral ulcerative mucositis (OUM), which is another side effect. Here, we investigated the effect of hyposalivation on OUM using sialoadenectomized rats and examined the effects of anticancer drugs on the salivary glands.
DESIGN: As models for hyposalivation, the bilateral submandibular and sublingual glands except (2EXT) or together with (3EXT) the parotid glands were extracted. At 16

Phospholipase D (PLD) has been implicated in many cellular functions, such as vesicle trafficking, exocytosis, differentiation, and proliferation. The aim of this study was to characterize the role of PLD in HSY cells, a human cell line originating from the intercalated duct of the parotid gland. As the function and intracellular localization of PLD varies according to cell type, initially, the intracellular localization of PLD1 and PLD2 was determined. By immunofluorescence, PLD1 and PLD2 both showed a punctate cytoplasmic distribution with extensive co-localization with TGN-46. PLD1 was also

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm that arises from soft tissue and makes up 5 % to 10 % of all types of sarcoma. It is most common between the ages of 15 and 40; it typically develops in the lower extremities; just 3 % to 10 % of cases arise in the head and neck. The usual main areas in the head and neck are the parapharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and paraspinal.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old woman presented with a painful mass in the left pre-auricular area.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined lobular mass localized super
