The association of long-term exposure to criteria air pollutants, fine particulate matter components, and airborne trace metals with late-life brain amyloid burden in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest associations between long-term ambient air pollution exposure and outcomes related to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Whether a link exists between pollutants and brain amyloid accumulation, a biomarker of AD, is unclear. We assessed whether long-term air pollutant exposures are associated with late-life brain amyloid deposition in Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study participants. METHODS: We used a chemical transport model with data fusion to estimate ambient concentrations of PM2.5 and its components, NO2, NOx, O3 (24-hour and 8-hour), CO, and airborne tra

Selenium-enriched soybean peptides pretreatment attenuates lung injury in mice induced by fine particulate matters (PM2.5) through inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB/IκBα signaling pathway and inflammasome generation.

This study aimed to identify and prepare peptides from selenium (Se)-enriched soybeans and determine whether dietary Se-enriched soybean peptides (Se-SPep) could inhibit lung injury in mice induced by fine particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5). BALB/c mice were randomly divided into six groups. The mice in the prevention groups were pretreated with 378 mg kg-1 of Se-SPep, soybean peptides (SPep), and Se-enriched soybean protein (Se-SPro), respectively, for four weeks. The mice in the PM2.5 exposure group received concentrated PM2.5 (15 μg per day mice) for 1 h daily from the third week for two weeks.…

Cardiovascular damage, arrhythmogenesis and overlapping Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases and TDP-43 pathology start in pediatric and young adult urban populations: Magnetic ultrafine particulate matter and industrial particles with motion behavior play a key role.

Cardiac damage and neurodegeneration simultaneously evolve in children and young adults, exposed to environmental oxidative, magnetic, motion capable, ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) and industrial nanoparticles (NPs). Particles move in situ when exposed to DC/AC magnetic 30-50 μT fields, and are documented in fetal hearts, brains and placentas. We identify magnetic NPs and measured motion behavior under AC and DC fields in ventricles, septum, atrioventricular (AV) conduction axis, auricles and ventricles, in healthy hearts of 18 Metropolitan Mexico City (MMC) 30.4 ± 9.4y olds with Alzheim…

Air pollution, ambient temperature, green space and preterm birth.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Preterm birth is the leading cause of global child mortality, and survivors are at increased risk of multiple morbidities that can continue into adulthood. Recent studies have suggested that maternal exposure to air pollution and high and low ambient temperatures may increase the risk of preterm birth, whereas proximity to green space may decrease it. This review summarizes these findings and suggests avenues for further research. RECENT FINDINGS: Particulate matter may be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, but the magnitude of the effect remains unclear. H…

Microbial methylation of particulate-bound mercury in water column and its underlying mechanisms: A critical review.

Due to the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of methylmercury (MeHg) within aquatic food web, it poses a significant threat to ecology and human health. Consequently, the methylation process of inorganic mercury (Hg) in aquatic systems has long been a focus of research. Although early research suggested that bottom sediments were the principal hotspot for microbial MeHg production, recent evidence highlighted that Hg methylation in water column constituted a non-negligible source, especially in oceans and deep lakes, where suspended particulate matter plays a crucial role in this process. T…

Observations on the particle pollution of the cities in China in the Coronavirus 2019 closure: Characteristics and lessons for environmental management.

Particulate matter in the air seriously affects human health and has been a hot topic of discussion. Because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in cities in China, sources of particulate matter, including gasoline-burning vehicles, dust-producing building sites, and coal-fired factories, almost all ceased at the end of January 2020. It was not until early April that outdoor activities recovered. Ten cities were selected as observation sites during the period from 19 December 2019 to 30 April 2020, covering the periods of preclosure, closure, and gradual resumption. A total of …

Air pollution impairs cognition, provokes depressive-like behaviors and alters hippocampal cytokine expression and morphology.

Particulate matter air pollution is a pervasive global risk factor implicated in the genesis of pulmonary and cardiovascular disease. Although the effects of prolonged exposure to air pollution are well characterized with respect to pulmonary and cardiovascular function, comparatively little is known about the impact of particulate matter on affective and cognitive processes. The central nervous system may be adversely affected by activation of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory pathways that accompany particulate matter pollution. Thus, we investigated whether long-term exposure to …
