Correlation of pattern discrimination perimetry to the optic disc and visual field in ocular hypertensive and chronic open-angle glaucoma patients.

We evaluated 19 ocular hypertensive and 32 chronic open-angle glaucoma patients to determine the correlation of pattern discrimination field loss to known markers of glaucomatous damage on the visual field and the optic nerve head. This study found no statistical association of the findings on the pattern discrimination perimeter to the areas of the optic disc, peripapillary halo, peripapillary atrophy, neural rim, or cup/pallor discrepancy (P > 0.05). In addition, no statistical relationship was observed to the diameters of the largest vein or artery in the inferior- or superior-temporal quad

Contrast sensitivity in multiple sclerosis measured by Cambridge Low Contrast Gratings: a useful clinical test?

The Cambridge Low Contrast Gratings (CLCG) were used to assess contrast sensitivity (CS) in 39 patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis and 60 control subjects. CS was determined in both horizontal and vertical orientations and compared with visual evoked responses (VERs) in the same populations. Only 33% of patients had abnormal CS whereas 82% had abnormal VERs. There was no correlation between the degree of abnormalities in CS and VERs. There was no significant difference between CS determined in the vertical and horizontal orientation; however, examination in the vertical orient

Connectivity of the ventral visual cortex is necessary for object recognition in patients.

The functional profiles of regions in the ventral occipital-temporal cortex (VTC), a critical region for object visual recognition, are associated with the VTC connectivity patterns to nonvisual regions relevant to the corresponding object domain. However, whether and how whole-brain connections affect recognition behavior remains untested. We directly examined the necessity of VTC connectivity in object recognition behavior by testing 82 patients whose lesion spared relevant VTC regions but affected various white matter (WM) tracts and other regions. In these patients, we extracted the whole-

The impact of string length on neural categorization processes for letters and digits.

Letters and Arabic digits are the building blocks of words and numbers. In the visual cortex, these culturally acquired characters are characterized by a differential involvement of the left and right hemispheres. Letters, as language-related symbols, predominantly involve left-hemispheric structures in the occipito-temporal cortex, while digits, as quantity-related symbols, elicit right-hemispheric or bilateral visual recognition processes. However, it remains unclear whether the human brain processes single elements and strings of characters differently depending on their category. This ques

Shortened Pattern Electroretinogram Latency and Impaired Autoregulatory Dynamics to Steady-State Stimuli in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The steady-state pattern electroretinogram (PERG) is a sensitive measure of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function that includes within-test progressive changes-adaptation-reflecting RGC autoregulatory dynamics. Comprehensive PERG assessment in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) (with or without optic neuritis [ON]) may provide unique information about RGC dysfunction and its progression, as well as a comparison between functional loss and structural loss as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). The goal of this project was to measure steady-state PERG components and the

Visual experiences during letter production contribute to the development of the neural systems supporting letter perception.

Letter production through handwriting creates visual experiences that may be important for the development of visual letter perception. We sought to better understand the neural responses to different visual percepts created during handwriting at different levels of experience. Three groups of participants, younger children, older children, and adults, ranging in age from 4.5 to 22 years old, were presented with dynamic and static presentations of their own handwritten letters, static presentations of an age-matched control's handwritten letters, and typeface letters during fMRI. First, data f

A compositional neural code in high-level visual cortex can explain jumbled word reading.

We read jubmled wrods effortlessly, but the neural correlates of this remarkable ability remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that viewing a jumbled word activates a visual representation that is compared to known words. To test this hypothesis, we devised a purely visual model in which neurons tuned to letter shape respond to longer strings in a compositional manner by linearly summing letter responses. We found that dissimilarities between letter strings in this model can explain human performance on visual search, and responses to jumbled words in word reading tasks. Brain imaging reve

A Model for the Origin of Motion Direction Selectivity in Visual Cortex.

Motion perception is a vital part of our sensory repertoire in that it contributes to navigation, awareness of moving objects, and communication. Motion sense in carnivores and primates originates with primary visual cortical neurons selective for motion direction. More than 60 years after the discovery of these neurons, there is still no consensus on the mechanism underlying direction selectivity. This paper describes a model of the cat's visual system in which direction selectivity results from the well-documented orientation selectivity of inhibitory neurons: inhomogeneities in the orientat

Color statistics of objects, and color tuning of object cortex in macaque monkey.

We hypothesized that the parts of scenes identified by human observers as "objects" show distinct color properties from backgrounds, and that the brain uses this information towards object recognition. To test this hypothesis, we examined the color statistics of naturally and artificially colored objects and backgrounds in a database of over 20,000 images annotated with object labels. Objects tended to be warmer colored (L-cone response > M-cone response) and more saturated compared to backgrounds. That the distinguishing chromatic property of objects was defined mostly by the L-M post-recepto

I can see where you would be: Patterns of fMRI activity reveal imagined landmarks.

Visual mental imagery arises when perceptual information is accessed from memory, originating the experience of "seeing with the mind's eye". Different content-dependent brain areas in the human ventral visual stream are activated during visual mental imagery, similarly to what happens during visual perception. The neural patterns within these regions, but not in the early visual cortex, are similar during imagery and perception, suggesting that, in the absence of perceptual stimulation, content-dependent brain areas are able to re-instantiate specific neural patterns allowing for mental image

A neural network approach to fMRI binocular visual rivalry task analysis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether artificial neural networks (ANN) are able to decode participants' conscious experience perception from brain activity alone, using complex and ecological stimuli. To reach the aim we conducted pattern recognition data analysis on fMRI data acquired during the execution of a binocular visual rivalry paradigm (BR). Twelve healthy participants were submitted to fMRI during the execution of a binocular non-rivalry (BNR) and a BR paradigm in which two classes of stimuli (faces and houses) were presented. During the binocular rivalry paradigm, beh

Poor vigilance affects attentional orienting triggered by central uninformative gaze and arrow cues.

Behaviour and neuroimaging studies have shown that poor vigilance (PV) due to sleep deprivation (SD) negatively affects exogenously cued selective attention. In the current study, we assessed the impact of PV due to both partial SD and night-time hours on reflexive attentional orienting triggered by central un-informative eye-gaze and arrow cues. Subjective mood and interference performance in emotional Stroop task were also investigated. Twenty healthy participants performed spatial cueing tasks using central directional arrow and eye-gaze as a cue to orient attention. The target was a word w

Cerebral lateralization of face-sensitive areas in left-handers: only the FFA does not get it right.

Face perception is highly lateralized to the right hemisphere (RH) in humans, as supported originally by observations of face recognition impairment (prosopagnosia) following brain damage. Divided visual field presentations, neuroimaging and event-related potential studies have supported this view. While the latter studies are typically performed in right-handers, the few reported cases of prosopagnosia with unilateral left damage were left-handers, suggesting that handedness may shift or qualify the lateralization of face perception. We tested this hypothesis by recording the whole set of fac

The magnocellular visual pathway and facial emotion misattribution errors in schizophrenia.

Many individuals with schizophrenia show impairment in labeling the emotion depicted by faces, and tend to ascribe anger or fear to neutral expressions. Preliminary research has linked some of these difficulties to dysfunction in the magnocellular (M) visual pathway, which has direct projections to subcortical emotion processing regions. The current study attempted to clarify these relationships using a novel paradigm that included a red background. Diffuse red light is known to suppress the M-pathway in nonpsychiatric adults, and there is preliminary evidence that it may have the opposite (st

Low-level processing deficits underlying poor contrast sensitivity for moving plaids in anisometropic amblyopia.

Many studies using random dot kinematograms have indicated a global motion processing deficit originated from extrastriate cortex, specifically middle temporal area (MT) and media superior temporal area (MST), in patients with amblyopia. However, the nature of this deficit remains unclear. To explore whether the ability of motion integration is impaired in amblyopia, contrast sensitivity for moving plaids and their corresponding component gratings were measured over a range of stimulus durations and spatial and temporal frequencies in 10 control subjects and 13 anisometropic amblyopes by using

Top-down activation of fusiform cortex without seeing faces in prosopagnosia.

Face processing can be modified by bottom-up and top-down influences, but it is unknown how these processes interact in patients with face-recognition impairments (prosopagnosia). We investigated a prosopagnosic with lesions in right occipital and left fusiform cortex but whose right fusiform gyrus is intact and still activated during face-processing tasks. P.S., a patient with a well-established and selective agnosia for faces, was instructed to detect the presence of either faces or houses in pictures with different amounts of noise. The right fusiform face area (FFA) showed reduced response

The semantic component of the evoked potential of differentiation.

This work analyzes data from recordings of (occipital and temporal) cortical evoked potentials (called evoked potentials of differentiation (EPD) occurring in humans in response to an abrupt substitution of stimuli. As stimuli we used three groups of words: the names of the ten basic colors taken from Newton's color circle; the names of seven basic emotions forming Shlossberg's circle of emotions; and seven nonsense words comprised of random combinations of letters. Within each group of word stimuli we constructed a matrix of the differences between the amplitudes of mid-latency components of

Object-based attention and visual area LO.

We investigated the neural basis of so-called "object-based attention" by examining patient D.F., who has visual form agnosia caused by bilateral damage to the lateral occipital (LO) area of the ventral visual stream. We tested D.F.'s object-based attention in two ways. In the first experiment, we used a spatial cueing procedure to compare the costs associated with shifting attention within versus between two separate outline figures. D.F. did not show the normal advantage of within-object over between-object attention shifts. In the second experiment, we used a complementary paradigm in which

Extraction of steady state visually evoked potential signal and estimation of distribution map from EEG data.

We propose a signal extraction method from multi-channel EEG signals and apply to extract Steady State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP) signal. SSVEP is a response to visual stimuli presented in the form of flushing patterns. By using several flushing patterns with different frequency, brain machine (computer) interface (BMI/BCI) can be realized. Therefore it is important to extract SSVEP signals from multi-channel EEG signals. At first, we estimate the power of the objective signal in each electrode. Estimation of the power is helpful in not only extraction of the signal but also drawing a d

Enhanced stimulus contrast normalizes visual processing of rapidly presented letters in Alzheimer's disease.

Deficient perception and cognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been attributed to slow information processing and attentional disturbance, but an additional explanation may be reduced signal strength. In 21 individuals with probable AD, 29 healthy older and 54 younger adults, we enhanced the contrast level of rapidly-flashed masked letters. The AD group reached identification criterion (80% accuracy), but required significantly higher contrast than the control groups. A source of the prevalent masking deficit may be reduced signal strength arising from dysfunction of retina or visual corte
