OBJECTIVE: Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) is increasingly viewed as a distinct childhood condition. Although it overlaps with ADHD in some features, emerging evidence suggests a unique behavioral and cognitive profile. However, research examining social functioning and emotion recognition in children with pure CDS remains limited.
METHODS: This study compared social competence and facial emotion recognition abilities among children aged 8 to 12 years across three groups: those with elevated CDS symptoms (n = 43), those with ADHD (n = 40), and healthy controls (n = 43). Social function

BACKGROUND: The involvement and engagement of adolescents in community-based HIV prevention programmes are crucial for enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of these programmes yet few programmes have documented their engagement strategies. This study aimed to describe and innovative approaches used to actively engage adolescents in HIV prevention health education programmes designed to increase awareness of HIV prevention methods, reduce risky behaviours, and increase uptake of HIV testing. METHODS: We employed participatory approaches involving pre-programme consultations with adole

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent peer navigators living with HIV play a vital role in linking clients to care, supporting adherence, and humanizing HIV services. Their value stems from lived experience-an identity that both empowers and leaves them vulnerable. While research highlights their contributions, less is known about how navigators experience the personal and emotional demands of their work. This study explores how they make sense of supporting adolescents while managing their own HIV-related vulnerabilities.
METHODS: Through the AMPATH Kenya research network, we conducted in-depth interview

Background: The impact of witnessing a colleague's line-of-duty death or suicide on firefighters is profound, potentially elevating the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide risk. Although violent loss has been acknowledged as more traumatic than natural loss, research exploring the specific outcomes of experiencing a colleague's death within these contexts are scarce. Methods: Of 58,299 South Korean firefighters, 53,980 (92.6%) participated in the survey. Posttraumatic symptoms, suicide risk, alcohol-related problems, emotional damage due to emotional labour, and perceived

Given the negative impact of deviant peer affiliation on adolescent behavioral development, understanding its underlying mechanisms is essential. Drawing on social development model, psychological reactance theory and adolescent-limited delinquency theory, this study examined the relationship between parenting behaviors and adolescents' deviant peer affiliation, as well as the mediating role of reactance and the moderating role of gender. The research involved 1,822 high school students (Mage = 15.28 years, SDage = 2.40) from two provinces in China. All students completed a face-to-face questi

Research on the school experiences of children with same-gender parents has been conducted through parents', teachers', and educators' narratives, while children's perspectives are still unexplored in the LGBTQ+ field. The present study explores the quality of school experience in 36 children (6-12 years; Mage = 8.98; SDage = 2.23) of 30 lesbian mothers (19 boys and 17 girls) born through assisted reproductive techniques. We used the specific section of the Friends and Family Interview regarding children's school experience (school experience section) that provides a measure of a child's schoo

Despite valuable insights into the predictors of high-quality romantic relationships, research has yet to examine the mediating role of peer relationship characteristics in linking parent-adolescent relationship quality to romantic relationship quality. In two longitudinal studies, the present research tested whether adolescents' relationship quality with best friends mediates the associations between relationship quality with mothers or fathers and relationship quality with romantic partners. In Study 1, 164 adolescents in early to middle adolescence (Mage = 13.76, SD = 0.87; 64% female; 91.5

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are a barrier to the well-being of youth living with HIV. Many youth living with HIV in Nigeria face peculiar biopsychosocial vulnerabilities that predispose them to mental health problems including depression and substance use. In addition to improving treatment outcomes like medication adherence and linkage to care, peer engagement has shown some promise in improving the social and emotional well-being of this population. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions like SMS text messaging medication reminders may also contribute to better outcomes in youth living

BACKGROUND: Over 30% of people in the United Kingdom are living with a long-term physical health condition. Early preventative peer support interventions could improve the lives and psychosocial well-being of people with long-term physical health conditions and reduce progression of any symptoms of low mood to more significant depression. In partnership with people with long-term conditions and industry stakeholders, we have co-designed an online peer support platform, CommonGround, to help people with long-term health conditions connect, support others, share experiences, and receive evidence

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) in sub-Saharan Africa are at higher risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. However, FSWs' life experiences are heterogeneous and are important to characterise in order to tailor responses to individual needs. Peer microplanners are FSWs trained to engage other FSWs and offer each individual a tailored package of support. We sought to assess the feasibility, acceptability and fidelity of implementing peer-led assessments of risk.
METHODS: Between December 2020 and August 2021, we conducted a qualitative process evaluation study of the Adapted Micropla

Objective: To identify factors impacting survivorship among people living with spinal cord injury (SCI) and volunteering in a peer mentorship program. Research Method/Design: Semi-structured interviews were conducted by a leader of a non-profit organization designed to promote independent living after SCI. Questions explored intrinsic factors such as resilience and emotional coping as well extrinsic factors such as family support and accessibility challenges that impacted their SCI survivorship journey. Two independent anonymous reviewers conducted thematic analysis to identify these factors.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated sex differences in longitudinal associations among youth depression, conduct problems, and peer rejection from ages 11 to 16. We hypothesized that girls would follow the irritable depression model, which posits that depression leads to conduct problems, and that peer rejection would mediate this relationship. We hypothesized that boys would follow the cumulative failure model, which suggests that conduct problems predict future depression, mediated by peer rejection.
METHOD: We used integrative data analysis to combine three datasets, creating an aggr

BACKGROUND: Peer recovery programs increase recovery support and treatment engagement among individuals with opioid use disorder. Peer recovery specialists (PRS) are critical in the cascade of care of treating addiction and related conditions. Work remains to help identify the benefits of PRS, particularly time spent with a PRS as a clinical indicator associated with referral to substance use treatment services. Gaps in the literature do not consider the nested hierarchical intercorrelations of opioid recovery data within multiple emergency departments.

Hepatitis C (HCV) treatment for people who use drugs (PWUD) decreases injection drug use and injection equipment sharing. We examined changes in injection drug use and injection equipment sharing following HCV treatment in a randomized trial comparing peer-assisted telemedicine for HCV treatment (TeleHCV) versus peer-assisted usual care in rural PWUD. We hypothesize that TeleHCV reduces risky behaviors and peers facilitate this change. We used mixed-effects logistic regression to describe participant-level (n = 203) associations between both injection drug use and injection equipment sharing a
