Sentiment Dynamics Among Informal Caregivers in Web-Based Alzheimer Communities: Systematic Analysis of Emotional Support and Interaction Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) are a growing global health challenge. ADRD place significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens on informal caregivers and negatively affects their well-being. Web-based social media platforms have emerged as valuable sources of peer support for these caregivers. However, there has been limited investigation into how web-based peer support might influence their mental well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the dynamics of sentiment scores, a major indicator of mental well-being, among informal ADRD caregivers, spec

Toxicity assessment of nanocosmetics: techniques and necessity for safety evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The application of nanotechnology to cosmetic formulations has gained recognition due to enhanced stability, efficacy, and aesthetic appeal of products. These engineered nanomaterials are purposefully produced to possess nano-specific properties, whereas traditional microsized particles are manufactured primarily to improve formulation texture. However, their increasing use for beautification and medicinal purposes has raised serious concerns regarding nanocosmetic toxicity. This review highlights the distinct physical and chemical characteristics of nanocosmetics that influence sk

Frontal plane knee moment in clinical gait analysis: A systematic review on the effect of kinematic gait changes.

INTRODUCTION: The frontal plane knee moment (KAM1 and KAM2) derived from non-invasive three-dimensional gait analysis is a surrogate measure for knee joint load and of great interest in clinical and research settings. Many aspects can influence this measure either unintentionally or purposely in order to reduce the knee joint load to relieve symptoms and pain. All these aspects must be known when conducting a study or interpreting gait data for clinical decision-making. METHODS: This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020187038). Pubmed and Web of Science were searched for p

Do callous-unemotional traits moderate the effects of the juvenile justice system on later offending behavior?

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that callous-unemotional (CU) traits, a recent addition to psychiatric classification of serious conduct problems, may moderate the influence of a number of contextual factors (e.g., parenting, deviant peer influence) on an adolescent's adjustment. The current study sought to replicate past research showing that formal processing through the juvenile justice system increases recidivism and tested the novel hypothesis that CU traits would moderate the relationship between processing decision and future antisocial behavior. METHODS: A diverse sample of first-time m…

A study of vulnerable student populations, exclusion and marginalization in Sierra Leonean secondary schools: a social justice theory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone faces challenges in ensuring equitable and inclusive education for all its citizens. Certain groups, including pregnant students, student mothers, students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, and those without family support, are particularly vulnerable to exclusion and marginalisation. These groups are identified as vulnerable based on criteria established by organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which highlight the interplay between health, socio-economic statu

Investigation of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls with familial Mediterranean fever: a comparative study with healthy controls.

UNLABELLED: Perimenstrual attacks have been reported in up to 15% of patients with FMF, suggesting that menstruation may be a trigger for FMF attacks. The aim of this study was to investigate menstrual period patterns and dysmenorrhea in adolescents with FMF in comparison to their healthy peers. This cross-sectional case-control study included 73 FMF patients and 70 age- and body mass index-matched controls. A structured questionnaire was designed to assess menstrual history, the frequency and severity of dysmenorrhea, symptoms related to dysmenorrhea, and the clinical features of FMF attacks.

Addressing digital exclusion to improve access to HIV and viral hepatitis care for people who experience criminalization: a mixed methods evaluation of a quality improvement project.

BACKGROUND: People who experience criminalization, such as those who use drugs, are incarcerated, and are affected by homelessness, have a high prevalence of HIV and/or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and low treatment uptake in British Columbia. Barriers to care include unreliable means of maintaining contact with healthcare providers. To reduce these barriers, the Test, Link, Call (TLC) Project provides cell phones and peer health mentors to support access to HIV and/or HCV care. This study aims to determine the outcomes and acceptability of TLC and its impact on care engagement. METHODS:

A mixed methods study to inform fatal overdose prevention in San Diego, California: Perspectives from people who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, community overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) programs have demonstrated efficacy in reducing opioid-related mortality. OEND programs have expanded across San Diego County, California, but differential naloxone accessibility among people who use drugs (PWUD) has not been assessed. We examined factors that shape individual naloxone accessibility in San Diego. METHODS: We employed a convergent parallel mixed methods design using surveys (n = 194) and qualitative interviews (n = 20). Ordinal logistic regression examined factors associated with in

Analyzing body dissatisfaction and gender dysphoria in the context of minority stress among transgender adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Gender dysphoria among transgender adolescents has predominantly been examined in relation to body dissatisfaction. While in adult transgender samples, body dissatisfaction is higher than in cisgender controls, this has so far rarely been investigated for adolescents. In the context of a cisnormative society, the impact of influences from the social environment on body dissatisfaction and gender dysphoria has been neglected in research. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) provide a detailed analysis of body dissatisfaction among young transgender people and (2) investigate whether b

Awareness and willingness to use HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among men who have sex with men in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: To facilitate provision of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), a better understanding of potential demand and user preferences is required. This review assessed awareness and willingness to use oral PrEP among men who have sex with men (MSM) in LMIC. METHODS: Electronic literature search of Cochrane library, Embase, PubMed, PsychINFO, CINHAL, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was conducted between July and September 2016. Reference lists of relevant studies were searched, and three authors contacted for additional data. Non-peer reviewed

Investigating the Writing Achievement of Deaf Learners.

This study investigated writing achievement in a Canadian cohort of school-aged deaf learners (N = 64). In the current context, in which most students are educated in inclusive settings and use hearing technologies, the goal was to establish whether outcomes approach those of hearing-age peers and identify demographic factors (e.g., gender, grade, additional disability, home language, hearing loss, hearing technology, auditory perception) influencing performance. Results indicated that a high percentage of participants performed in the average range or higher on a standardized, norm-referenced

Physical Activity for Children and Youth with Physical Disabilities: A Case Study on Implementation in the Municipality Setting.

Children and youth with disabilities participate less in physical activity (PA) than their peers. This qualitative multiple-case study aimed to assess how municipal practices support PA implementation for these children and youth. A total of 23 interviews were conducted, which covered participants from different departments and professional positions in two municipalities. Local policy documents were included. A thematic analysis was performed, which was based on Winter's integrated implementation model and Gittell's theory on relational coordination. The study findings indicate how PA impleme

Environmental determinants of type 1 diabetes: a role for overweight and insulin resistance.

Rates of type 1 diabetes are rising globally, with a decreasing proportion of high-risk genotypes and twin concordance rates below 50%. Therefore, environmental factors such as viruses, nutrition and overweight have been examined as putative aetiological agents. The accelerator hypothesis proposes that overweight and insulin resistance are central to both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and may explain, in part, the rise in type 1 diabetes incidence. The temporal rise in body mass index at type 1 diabetes onset and the observation that pre-diabetic children are heavier and more insulin resistant th

Coming of age on the streets: survival sex among homeless young women in Hollywood.

This study examined childhood physical or sexual abuse, involvement in dependency or delinquency systems, psychiatric hospitalization, and suicide as possible risk factors for survival sex among homeless young women. Homeless young women were found to have similarly high rates of childhood sexual abuse, dependency and delinquency systems involvement, and psychiatric hospitalization. Homeless young women involved in survival sex disclosed higher rates of attempted suicide and reported marginally higher rates of childhood physical abuse. Analysis of qualitative data showed that those engaged in

Would you say you had unprotected sex if ...? Sexual health language in emails to a reproductive health website.

The words and metaphors that people use to describe sexuality and reproductive health reflect experiences with peers, sexual partners, health service providers and public health campaigns. In this paper we analyse 1134 emails sent to an emergency contraception website in the USA over the course of one year. Through an examination of the terminology used by authors to describe contraceptive methods, sexual intercourse and other sexual acts, we analyse what those terms signify within their textual context. We find that the kinds of risk concerns used in assessing sexual activity - whether evalua

Idiopathic precocious puberty in girls: Psychosexual development.

A promising model syndrome for the examination of the role of physical maturation in the development of female sexuality is idiopathic precocious puberty (IPP). In this first controlled study of psychosexual development in IPP females, 16 females between 13 and 20 years of age with a history of IPP were compared to 16 control subjects with a history of normal puberty pair-matched to the index subjects on the basis of sex, race, age, socioeconomic level, and menarcheal status. The psychosexual history and the current psychosexual status were assessed by a systematic half-structured interview. T
