Large ribosomal protein 4 inhibits tobacco vein banding mosaic virus replication by impairing nuclear export of viral NIb.

Cell-intrinsic restriction factors (CIRFs) negatively regulate plant virus infections and represent valuable resources for breeding virus-resistant crops. However, the potential for ribosomal proteins to function as CIRFs and the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. Our previous work demonstrated that the Nicotiana benthamiana chloroplastic ribosomal protein of the large subunit 1 (NbRPL1) promotes the infection of tobacco vein banding mosaic virus (TVBMV) by antagonizing the NbBeclin1-mediated degradation of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, NIb. Continuing this line of research, we e

Suaeda salsa: stress adaptation, soil restoration, and agronomic potential in salt-affected environments.

Suaeda salsa is a widely distributed annual euhalophyte that thrives under both saline and saline-alkaline conditions, making it a valuable model for understanding plant salt-tolerance mechanisms and a promising resource for saline agriculture. However, the integrated understanding of how its physiological, biochemical, molecular, and microbial responses collectively support salt tolerance remains fragmented. Moreover, how these traits contribute to soil restoration and agricultural use remains insufficiently understood. S. salsa achieves optimal growth at 200 mM NaCl and tolerates salinity up

Hyperspectral imaging and dynamic selective peak transformer for early-stage classification of lettuce heat responses.

INTRODUCTION: Early-stage detection and classification of lettuce heat responses are essential for non-destructive phenotyping, yet conventional assessment mainly relies on visible symptoms and manual observation. METHODS: This study constructed a lettuce hyperspectral dataset comprising heat-sensitive and heat-tolerant varieties under control and high-temperature treatments, and proposed the Dynamic Selective Peak Transformer (DSPformer). DSPformer integrates edge-enhanced feature extraction, dynamic multi-scale spatial-spectral representation, Peak-k selective attention, and a confusion-awa

Overexpression of MhERF1 promotes flavonoid accumulation in hairy roots of the Tibetan medicinal plant Mirabilis himalaica.

Mirabilis himalaica, a valuable traditional Tibetan medicinal plant, is an important natural source of bioactive flavonoids. Due to excessive harvesting, this species has become endangered, highlighting the need to enhance the production of its medicinal metabolites through molecular breeding and metabolic engineering. In this study, analysis of previously generated transcriptomic and metabolomic datasets identified MhERF1 as a candidate transcription factor gene associated with flavonoid accumulation. The MhERF1 coding sequence was cloned, and Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated hairy-root tran

Genome-Wide Identification of the ZmNF-Y Transcription Factor Family in Maize and Functional Characterization of ZmNF-YA7 in Drought Tolerance.

The nuclear factor Y (NF-Y) transcription factor family plays crucial roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, studies on the NF-Y family in maize remain relatively limited. In this study, we identified 53 NF-Ys in the maize genome, which were classified into ZmNF-YA, ZmNF-YB, and ZmNF-YC subfamilies. These genes exhibited diverse physicochemical properties and were unevenly distributed across the 10 chromosomes. Synteny analysis revealed 48 collinear gene pairs between maize and rice, indicating close evolutionary relationships. Gene structure and conserved motif ana

OsbZIP60 Positively Regulates Salt-Stress Tolerance in Rice.

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress limiting rice growth and grain productivity worldwide. Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors serve as central regulators of plant environmental stress responses, yet the biological function and molecular regulatory mechanism of rice OsbZIP60 (LOC_Os07g44950) underlying salinity tolerance remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, we systematically characterized the salt-stress regulatory function of OsbZIP60 in rice. Tissue expression profiling revealed that OsbZIP60 was ubiquitously transcribed across all examined rice tissues, and its e

Dynamic sparse point voxel transformer for 3D point cloud instance segmentation of dormant apple trees.

Three dimensional (3D) instance segmentation is essential for precision characterization of tree architecture at the branch level, which supports both tree fruit crop breeding and the development of robotic systems for orchard management. Existing methods usually use sparse convolution-based operation, which requires a coordinate quantization preprocess to generate sparse tensors, risking the loss of geometric details for fine-grained downstream phenotyping tasks. To overcome this challenge, we developed the dynamic sparse point-voxel transformer (DSPVFormer) model for the efficient and accura

Stones in genomic storms: transposable element-driven variation in Prunus fruit trees.

Transposable elements (TEs) are major components of plant genomes and drivers of structural and functional diversification. In Prunus species, including peach, almond, apricot, cherry, and plum, TEs constitute more than half of the genome and shape evolutionary trajectories and phenotypic traits. This review synthesizes knowledge on TE composition, evolutionary dynamics and functional impacts in Prunus, highlighting advances enabled by long-read sequencing and structure-aware annotation pipelines. Both class I retrotransposons and class II DNA transposons contribute to genome expansion, gene d

Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses uncover stage-specific dynamic regulatory networks during sesame floral development.

Sesame is an important oilseed crop, and floral development is a key biological process that lays the foundation for pollination, fertilization, and seed formation, which are closely associated with final yield potential. However, the dynamic transcriptional and metabolic regulatory mechanisms during floral development remain unclear. Here, we performed an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis across five key developmental stages (T1-T5) of sesame flowers to systematically dissect the multi‑omics regulatory network. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed distinct stage‑specific metabol

Flower size evolution in the Southwest Pacific.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite accelerating interest in island evolution, the general evolutionary trajectories of island flowers remain poorly understood. In particular the island rule, which posits that small organisms become larger and large organisms become smaller after island colonization, while tested for various plant traits, has never been tested for flower size. Here, we provide the first test of the island rule for flower size for animal- and wind-pollinated flowers, and the first evidence for generalized in situ evolution of flower size on islands. METHODS: Focusing on ten archipela

Intraspecific variability of rice root knot nematodes across diverse agroecosystems for sustainable management.

In the rice agroecosystems of Southeast Asia, rice root knot nematode (Meloidogyne graminicola) significantly impairs yield, representing a major species within the 'graminis-group' known for its morphological similarities with other root knot nematodes (RKNs). This study delves into the variations in reproductive potential, morphology, morphometrics, and genetic diversity among thirty RKN populations in rice across three distinct agroecological zones in Jharkhand, India. Despite notable differences in reproductive potential among the populations, morphological and morphometric correlations to

The chromosome-level genome assembly of Astragalus sinicus and comparative genomic analyses provide new resources and insights for understanding legume-rhizobial interactions.

The legume species Astragalus sinicus (Chinese milk vetch [CMV]) has been widely cultivated for centuries in southern China as one of the most important green manures/cover crops for improving rice productivity and preventing soil degeneration. In this study, we generated the first chromosome-scale reference genome of CMV by combining PacBio and Illumina sequencing with high-throughput chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C) technology. The CMV genome was 595.52 Mb in length, with a contig N50 size of 1.50 Mb. Long terminal repeats (LTRs) had been amplified and contributed to genome size expansi

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of Gossypium thurberi in Response to Verticillium dahliae Inoculation.

Verticillium wilt is threatening cotton productivity globally. This disease is caused by soil-borne Verticillium dahliae which directly infects cotton roots, and exclusively colonizes and occludes xylem vessels, finally resulting in necrosis, defoliation, and most severely, plant death. For the first time, iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification) was applied to screen the differentially expressed proteins of Gossypium thurberi inoculated with V. dahliae. A total of 6533 proteins were identified from the roots of G. thurberi after inoculation with V. dahliae, and 396 showe

Occupational injuries on thoroughbred horse farms: a description of Latino and non-Latino workers' experiences.

Animal production is a dangerous industry and increasingly reliant on a Latino workforce. Within animal production, little is known about the risks or the occupational hazards of working on farms involved in various aspects of thoroughbred horse breeding. Extant research suggests that horse workers are at risk of musculoskeletal and respiratory symptoms, kicks, and other injuries. However, limited known research has examined the experiences of the industry's workers, including immigrant workers, despite their prominence and increased vulnerability. Using data collected from thoroughbred farm r

Potential biological control of the pupal stage of the European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria pseudobassiana in the winter season in Chile.

OBJECTIVE: Lobesia botrana, the European grapevine moth, affects Vitis vinifera L. and other species of economic importance in a number of countries through damage caused by its larvae in berries and associated secondary diseases such as Botrytis cinerea. Control of the moth in urban areas is difficult due to poor chemical management of infested plants in houses. Additionally, in winter, L. botrana is in its pupal stage covered with a cocoon that prevents the penetration of chemical pesticides. For this reason, the objective of this work was to control the pupal stage with a formulation based

Genes for iron-sulphur cluster assembly are targets of abiotic stress in rice, Oryza sativa.

Iron-sulphur (Fe-S) cluster assembly occurs in chloroplasts, mitochondria and cytosol, involving dozens of genes in higher plants. In this study, we have identified 41 putative Fe-S cluster assembly genes in rice (Oryza sativa) genome, and the expression of all genes was verified. To investigate the role of Fe-S cluster assembly as a metabolic pathway, we applied abiotic stresses to rice seedlings and analysed Fe-S cluster assembly gene expression by qRT-PCR. Our data showed that genes for Fe-S cluster assembly in chloroplasts of leaves are particularly sensitive to heavy metal treatments, and

[Highest mosquito records (Diptera: Culicidae) in Venezuela].

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are holometabolous insects with aquatic immature stages, which use a broad variety of larval habitats, from ground water bodies to Phytothelmata (water deposits in plants) and artificial deposits. The availability of breeding sites often determines the upper limits of mosquito ranges. We built a database with 9,607 records with 432 localities, 19 genera and 254 species. The Andean mountains have 77% of the highest mosquito records including Aedes euris with record at 3,133 m, followed by three species of Anopheles--subgenera Kerteszia--with the upper limit of 2,

Glutamine synthetase genes family mediates nitrogen metabolism and disease responses in Kentucky bluegrass.

BACKGROUND: Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), an important cool-season turfgrass species, requires adequate nitrogen (N) fertilization for normal growth and development. It is also susceptible to infection by pathogens. The glutamine synthetase (GS) gene family, known to play central roles in plant N metabolism and disease responses across higher plants, has functions that remain uncharacterized in Kentucky bluegrass. RESULTS: We identified and characterized four GS genes (PpGS1.1, PpGS1.2, PpGS1.3, and PpGS2) in Kentucky bluegrass. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship wit
