OBJECTIVE: To test a novel hydrogel sealant to secure sutureless sclerotomies under variable intraocular pressure conditions.
METHODS: In cadaver eyes, 23- and 20-gauge (G) sclerotomies were constructed. Sixteen 23-G beveled sclerotomies were constructed in 4 eyes: 8 of the incisions were treated with hydrogel sealant, while 8 were left bare. This is a long-term follow-up report of all-polyethylene tibial components in 60 years and younger, active patients. At the mean follow-up of 12.4 ± 2.7 (range, 10-18 years), no more patients were deceased or lost to follow-up, leaving 32 patients (44 knees) for final analysis. Malignant bone tumors and osteitis of the distal femur are common at every age. These conditions must be considered in patients with total knee arthroplasty and suspicious x-rays. A patient with gross polyethylene-wear-induced osteolysis and periprosthetic fracture is described. For a period of 12 months all samples submitted for serum prolactin (PRL) assay and with PRL > 700 mU/L were examined by gel filtration chromatography. In 17 (25%) of 69 samples we found macroprolactin. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitates obtained from sera were characterized and quantitated in 20 borderline lepromatous (BL) and polar lepromatous (LL) patients with moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) before and four weeks after treatment with anti-ENL drugs, e.g., cortisone, clofazimine, chloroquine, or aspirin. Although the clinical severity of ENL subsided, there was no significant clearance of material that precipitates with PEG from the circulation.
