Effects of unilateral neck muscle vibration on tilt direction and variability of subjective postural vertical in the frontal plane during seated posture in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral neck muscle vibration (NMV) activates the primary endings of muscle spindles and modulates both subjective visual vertical and subjective straight-ahead perception. However, its effects on subjective postural vertical (SPV), crucial for postural balance, remain poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the effects of unilateral NMV-induced proprioceptive stimulation on SPV tilt direction and intraindividual variability in the frontal plane in healthy participants. METHODS: We included 48 healthy adults (29 males, 19 females; age 22.5 ± 1.1 years; height 167.7 ± 7.4 cm;

Effect of a Novel Postural Support Device Versus Conventional Swaddling on Postural Development in Preterm Neonates Over One Week: A Quasi-Experimental Trial.

BACKGROUND: Preterm neonates are at high risk of postural asymmetries and developmental delays due to the abrupt transition from the protect … ores for shoulders (p < 0.001), hips/pelvis (p < 0.001), knees/ankles/feet (p < 0.001), and overall posture (p < 0.001) compared to controls. Improvements in head, neck, and hand positioning were also observed, with the intervention group showing early correction of baseline deficits. CONCLUSION: The novel postural support device, when combined with phys …

Immediate effects of thoracic postural correction taping on sensorimotor and respiratory functions in healthy office workers with forward head posture- a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Forward head posture can create problems with sensory motor functions, breathing pattern, and thoracic kyphosis. Thoracic taping is a procedure that provides mechanical correction to reduce the load on the spine and the muscles. There is a lack of evidence that assesses the immediate effect of the postural correction on sensorimotor functions and respiratory functions in office workers. METHODS: A Randomized Controlled Trial among Healthy Males and Females in the age group of 25-50 years, with jobs that involve prolonged sitting hours on the desk or in front of a Visual Display Un…

A Quasi-Experimental Controlled Study to Evaluate the Effects of a Kinesiologic Approach-The Canali Postural Method-To Posture Reprogramming for Non-Specific Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, with most cases classified as non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). Various treatments exist, among which are physical exercises that promote flexibility, mobility and core stabilization, improving muscle function and body posture. The Canali Postural Method (CPM) is a kinesiological method that offers a personalized approach to postural reprogramming. This study compares the effects of the CPM and generic exercises in individuals with NSLBP. METHODS: Subjects with NSLBP were engaged in a four-week interven…

Comparing the effects of anticipatory postural adjustments focused training and balance training on postural preparation, balance confidence and quality of life in elderly with history of a fall.

BACKGROUND: Impairment of postural adjustments in elderly is associated with decreased functional mobility, balance confidence and quality o … ion training, as it reduced the probability of falling (by decreasing muscle latency and increasing posture preparation), improved the balance confidence for daily activities, and improved the quality of life.

Increased alertness, better than posture prioritization, explains dual-task performance in prosthesis users and controls under increasing postural and cognitive challenge.

Sensorimotor impairments after limb amputation impose a threat to stability. Commonly described strategies for maintaining stability are the posture first strategy (prioritization of balance) and posture second strategy (prioritization of concurrent tasks). The existence of these strategies was examined in 13 below-knee prosthesis users and 15 controls during dual-task standing under increasing postural and cognitive challenge by evaluating path length, 95% sway area, and anterior-posterior and medial-lateral amplitudes of the center of pressure. The subjects stood on two force platforms under…

Cumulative additional information does not improve the neuromuscular control during postural responses to perturbations in postural instability/gait disorders subtype of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Postural response impairments in postural instability and gait disorders (PIGD) subtype patients may be attributed to Parkinson's disease (PD)-deterioration in central-set (programing/modulating of central outputs during motor responses). Although additional information improves some PD motor impairments, an unanswered question is whether additional information can benefit postural response in PIGD subtype. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effect of cumulative additional information on postural responses after perturbation in PIGD and neurologically healthy older adults (CG). METHODS: P

Body Posture and Low Back Pain in Amateur Tennis Players: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Background: Quantitative assessment of postural parameters in all anatomical planes may help clarify the potential role of posture in the pathomechanism of low back pain (LBP) in tennis players and support the development of preventive and rehabilitation strategies. This observational cross-sectional study aimed to compare selected pelvic and spinal posture parameters of amateur tennis players with LBP, amateur tennis players without LBP, and physically active controls without LBP who did not participate in asymmetric sports. Methods: The study included 116 participants (52 women and 64 men): …

The association between physical activity and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: improper sitting posture as a mediator.

BACKGROUND: The association between physical activity (PA) and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains unclear. This study investigates whether improper sitting posture mediates the relationship between PA and AIS in cross-sectional analyses. METHODS: This study utilized data on adolescents collected across 9 provinces in China in 2021, involving 3,536 participants for cross-sectional analysis. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the associations among PA, improper sitting posture, and AIS. Mediation analyses assessed the mediating role of improper sitting post…

Within- and between-session reliability of pelvic marker placement and posture in lower-limb amputees.

BACKGROUND: Accurate placement of anatomical markers is essential for valid three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis, yet individuals with lower-limb amputation (LLA) pose unique challenges due to altered anatomy, prosthetic interfaces, and increased adiposity. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed within- and between-session reliability of pelvis marker placement and static posture kinematics in adults with unilateral LLA. METHODOLOGY: Fourteen adults with unilateral LLA (age: 58 ± 15 years, height: 174.6 ± 7.5 cm, body mass: 91.1 ± 27.7 kg, BMI: 29.6 ± 7.5 kg/m2; eleven transtibial, three transfemora…

The investigation of relationship between allergic rhinitis with forward head posture and anxiety in children.

INTRODUCTION: Forward head posture is a common postural issue across all age groups, often linked to the overuse of electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, leading to poor posture in children. Allergic rhinitis is also prevalent in children, but its effects on musculoskeletal and psychological health are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the relationship between allergic rhinitis, forward head posture, and anxiety levels in Iranian children aged 7-12 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty children aged 7-12 were recruited from the Allergy-Infect…
