White mulberry fruit polysaccharides enhance endothelial nitric oxide production to relax arteries in vitro and reduce blood pressure in vivo.

Mulberry fruit polysaccharides have demonstrated excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic properties. This study tested the effect of white mulberry fruit polysaccharides (WMFPs) on blood pressure. WMFPs induced endothelium-dependent relaxation in rat mesenteric arteries and NO production in endothelial cells, both of which were reversed by the NO synthase inhibitor Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride, a phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002, a cell-permeable Ca2+ chelator (1,2-bis (o-aminophenoxy) ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (acetoxymet

Selection of intraoperative fluid for kidney transplantation.

The kidney, the most frequently transplanted organ, represents the optimal treatment for end-stage renal disease. Transplanted kidneys are highly vulnerable to perioperative injuries such as hypotension and hypovolemia, which can be influenced by perioperative fluid management. Postoperatively, delayed graft function increases the risk of graft failure. Although adequate volume administration can reduce delayed graft function, the type of intraoperative fluid most likely to benefit and support graft function remains unclear. Traditionally, crystalloids have been the primary choice for fluid ma

Novel GABA responses from rod-driven retinal horizontal cells.

gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Two classes of GABA receptors (GABAA and GABAB) have been identified. GABAA receptors are ligand-gated chloride channels that are competitively antagonized by bicuculline, noncompetitively blocked by picrotoxin, and often allosterically modulated by barbiturates and benzodiazepines. GABAB receptors regulate potassium and calcium channels through G-protein and intracellular second-messenger pathways, are selectively activated by baclofen, and are antagonized by phaclofen and 2-hydroxysaclofen.

Electrical perception of "death message" in chara: analysis of rapid component and ionic process.

Electrical response upon wounding was analyzed in Chara corallina. A specimen comprising two adjoining internodal cells was prepared. One cell (victim cell) was killed by cutting and any changes in the membrane potential of the neighboring cell (the receptor cell) were measured. Upon cutting the victim cell, the receptor cell generated four kinds of depolarizations: (1) rapid component, (2) slow and long-lasting component, (3) action potential and (4) small spike. Rapid and slow components were observed in most cells. On the other hand, the action potential and small spike were not always ubiq

NKCCs in the fibrocytes of the spiral ligament are silent on the unidirectional K⁺ transport that controls the electrochemical properties in the mammalian cochlea.

Unidirectional K(+) transport across the lateral cochlear wall contributes to the endocochlear potential (EP) of +80 mV in the endolymph, a property essential for hearing. The wall comprises two epithelial layers, the syncytium and the marginal cells. The basolateral surface of the former and the apical membranes of the latter face the perilymph and the endolymph, respectively. Intrastrial space (IS), an extracellular compartment between the two layers, exhibits low [K(+)] and a potential similar to the EP. This IS potential (ISP) dominates the EP and represents a K(+) diffusion potential elic

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain as an Initial Presentation of Gitelman Syndrome in Adulthood: A Case Report.

Gitelman syndrome is an autosomal recessive salt-wasting tubulopathy characterized by hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, hypomagnesaemia and hypocalciuria. It may present in adulthood with nonspecific symptoms including cramps, fatigue and musculoskeletal complaints. We report the case of a 34-year-old male electrical engineer with a three-year history of low back pain, neck and shoulder pain, and radiculopathy. His spinal history is briefly noted as contextual. He was found to have persistent hypokalemia (serum K⁺ ~2.9-3.4 mmol/L), hypomagnesaemia (serum Mg²⁺ ~0.97-1.16 mmol/L), metabolic alka

Severe Persistent Hyperkalemia with Electrocardiogram Changes in a Patient with Hyperaldosteronism.

A 62-year-old female presented to the emergency department (ED) with fatigue and generalized body weakness for the last three days. Upon arrival, initial ECG showed wide complex tachycardia with sine waves and a heart rate (HR) ranging between 100-170 bpm. She was otherwise vitally stable. The patient had a past medical history of hyperaldosteronism, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD) with microalbuminuria, and hypertension. She also had a history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and residual left-sided weakness more pronounced in the upper limb. Initial venous blood

Physiological and quantitative proteomic analyses unraveling potassium deficiency stress response in alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides L.) root.

Physiological and iTRAQ based proteomic analysis provided new insights into potassium deficiency stress response in alligator weed root. Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) has a strong ability to adapt to potassium deficiency (LK) stress. Proteomic changes in response to this stress are largely unknown in alligator weed. In this study, we investigated physiological and molecular mechanisms under LK using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation to characterize proteome-level changes in this plant. First, root physiology, 2, 3, 5-Triphenyl-trazolium chloride (TTC) assay an

A claim for caution in the use of promising bumetanide to treat neonatal seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe sonographic findings in patients with Peyronie disease that may explain persistent penile pain in these patients. We propose the term penile compartment syndrome for use in radiology and urology practice to describe this condition. METHODS: Thirty-five consecutive patients were examined. All these patients had clinically "mature" plaques with Peyronie disease. Penile duplex sonography was performed as part of the patient evaluation before possible corrective surgery. RESULTS: All patients had the classic sonographic finding of plaques in the tunica albu

An attempt to explain bimodal behaviour of the sapphire c-plane electrolyte interface.

A tentative picture for the charging of the sapphire basal plane in dilute electrolyte solutions allows reconciliation of the available experimental observations within a dual charging model. It includes the MUltiSIte Complexation (MUSIC) model and auto-protolysis of interfacial water. The semi-empirical MUSIC model predicts protonation and deprotonation constants of individual surface functional groups based on crystal structure and bond-valence principles: on the ideal sapphire c-plane only doubly co-ordinated hydroxyl groups exist which cause quasi zero surface potential (defined as the pot

Two Mineralocorticoid Receptor-Mediated Mechanisms of Pendrin Activation in Distal Nephrons.

BACKGROUND: Regulation of sodium chloride transport in the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron is essential for fluid homeostasis and BP control. The chloride-bicarbonate exchanger pendrin in β-intercalated cells, along with sodium chloride cotransporter (NCC) in distal convoluted tubules, complementarily regulate sodium chloride handling, which is controlled by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. METHODS: Using mice with mineralocorticoid receptor deletion in intercalated cells, we examined the mechanism and roles of pendrin upregulation via mineralocorticoid receptor in two different
