Retrieval-induced forgetting under psychosocial stress: no reduction by delayed stress and beta-adrenergic blockade.

Retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) is the phenomenon that 'retrieval-practice', the repeated retrieval of a subset of initially learned material, can impair the recall of episodically related memories. Previous studies showed that RIF is eliminated when retrieval-practice is carried out under psycho-social stress, anxiety, or in negative mood. However, pharmacological manipulation by hydrocortisone did not eliminate the effect. This study investigated the effect of beta-adrenergic blockade on stress-induced modulations of RIF, addressing possible interactive effects of the glucocorticoid and s

Bullying Experiences of South Korean Nursing Students During Clinical Practice: A Focus Group Study on Two Colleges.

Background/Objectives: Nursing students are often exposed to bullying in clinical settings. Bullying in a practice environment is an important issue that causes psychological, physical, and mental health problems in nursing students. However, in South Korea, few qualitative studies have examined bullying among nursing students in clinical practice environments. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of bullying among South Korean nursing students during clinical practice. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study using a semi-structured interview guide was employed to collect data fr

Pediatric clinical practice experiences of nursing students: A scoping review of qualitative studies.

PROBLEM: Pediatric clinical practice is essential in nursing education, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in child- and family-centered care. However, pediatric settings involve distinct emotional, communicative, and organizational challenges that may influence students' learning and professional development. OBJECTIVE: To systematically map and synthesize qualitative and phenomenological research examining nursing students' experiences in pediatric clinical practice settings. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Qualitative studies published in English between 2020 and 2025 that explored nu

Insecure Attachment and Psychological Distress in Early Adolescence: Loneliness as a Mediator.

The existing research on attachment has been predominantly limited to Western adult populations and parental attachment relationships, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of adolescent development. The present study addresses these limitations by investigating how insecure attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers is associated with psychological distress in early adolescence (grades 7-9), with particular attention to the mediating role of loneliness. This developmental period represents a critical window for intervention, as patterns of social-emotional adjustment established during

Spaced retrieval practice improves the uptake of and intention to use personal neuropsychological assessment feedback: a randomized cognitive experiment in a sample of older black and white veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological assessment feedback has the potential to promote cognitive/brain health, yet few studies have tested how feedback can be modified to improve its uptake. The current study used a randomized, between-subjects longitudinal design to test the effect of spaced retrieval practice (SRP) on uptake of neuropsychological assessment feedback. METHOD: Participants included 65 predominantly Black American (83%) older adults (Mage: 65.48) who underwent clinical neuropsychological assessment at a Veteran's Affairs outpatient clinic. Following the assessment, participants were r

Examining the Roles of Retrieval Practice and Post-Retrieval Feedback in Learning Among Autistic Adults.

Retrieval practice enhances learning and is most effective when feedback is provided. Despite robust evidence that retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback benefit numerous clinical populations, these techniques have not been studied in autism. In two experiments, we measured retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback effects on associative memory in autistic and non-autistic adults residing in the United States. Participants attempted to memorize semantically unrelated word pairs, which were then reviewed during a practice phase consisting of retrieval practice with and without feed

Effectiveness of Nurse-Led Psychoeducation on Knowledge and Psychological Distress in Cancer Patients Undergoing Radiological Imaging: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer undergoing radiological imaging often experience psychological distress due to procedural uncertainty and fear of unfavorable diagnoses. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led psychoeducational intervention on knowledge and psychological distress among cancer patients undergoing imaging in India. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 120 adult cancer patients who underwent radiological imaging. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group, receiving nurse-led psychoeducation, or the control gro

Anticipatory coping: taking control of hair loss.

Many women consider hair loss to be one of the most difficult and feared side effects of chemotherapy treatments. On learning they will likely lose their hair, women immediately begin anticipating the event and its impact on themselves and others. Anticipation of an unwanted event can lead to greater anxiety, fear, or depression, particularly if women see or find no options for gaining some sense of control. Anticipatory coping is the process of anticipation and preparation for an expected altered appearance. By researching options, making deliberate choices, and taking specific actions to det

Investigating speech motor practice and learning in people who stutter.

UNLABELLED: In this exploratory study, we investigated whether or not people who stutter (PWS) show motor practice and learning changes similar to those of people who do not stutter (PNS). To this end, five PWS and five PNS repeated a set of non-words at two different rates (normal and fast) across three test sessions (T1, T2 on the same day and T3 on a separate day, at least 1 week apart). The results indicated that PWS and PNS may resemble each other on a number of performance variables (such as movement amplitude and duration), but they differ in terms of practice and learning on variables

Perceptual specificity in visual object priming: functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence for a laterality difference in fusiform cortex.

Seeing an object on one occasion may facilitate or prime processing of the same object if it is later again encountered. Such priming may also be found -- but at a reduced level -- for different but perceptually similar objects that are alternative exemplars or 'tokens' of the initially presented object. We explored the neural correlates of this perceptual specificity using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures, contrasting neural activity when participants made object classification decisions (size judgments) regarding previously presented objects (repeated sam

Changes in chronic nightmares after one session of desensitization or rehearsal instructions.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of one session of instructions on the frequency of chronic nightmares and on self-rated distress. METHOD: Twenty-eight volunteers with chronic nightmares (mean duration = 19 years) were treated with either one session of desensitization with instructions on how to practice this treatment or with one session of instructions to change the nightmare and how to rehearse the new version. The authors administered four scales of the SCL-90 and the corresponding scales of the Symptom Questionnaire. RESULTS: At 7-month follow-up of 23 pa

The Mind Locker Method: A Lived-Experience Model of Chronic Pain Self-Regulation and Resilience.

This article introduces the Mind Locker Method, a lived-experience-based psychological method for sustaining resilience in individuals living with chronic pain, including trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Developed over a decade through lived experience with TN, the method integrates analytic autoethnography as methodology with clinical training and trauma-informed regulation strategies. The method consists of five structured pillars: self-awareness and body literacy, mental anchoring and redirection, breath and movement calibration, emotional containment, and adaptation through pain. These strategie

Child sexual abuse versus adult sexual assault: A review of psychological and neurobiological sequelae.

Sexual trauma (ST) occurs with alarming frequency in the United States (U.S.) in the form of both childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adulthood sexual assault (ASA). It is well-established that the effects of ST are pervasive, and that ST can be a risk factor for the development of several psychiatric disorders. However, the potential for distinct psychological consequences or neural correlates between CSA and ASA has received little attention. Furthermore, despite the high prevalence of sexual revictimization, the combinatorial effects of CSA and ASA are understudied in comparison to each form o

Tinnitus and Traumatic Memory.

Events linked to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) influence psychological and physical health through the generation, exacerbation, and maintenance of symptoms such as anxiety, hyperarousal, and avoidance. Depending upon circumstance, traumatic events may also contribute to the onset of tinnitus, post-traumatic headache, and memory problems. PTSD should be considered a psychological injury, andwhile tinnitus is a symptom, its onset and sound quality may be connected in memory to the injury, thereby evincingthe capacity to exacerbate the trauma's effects. The myriad attributes, psychologic

Psychology of Hair Loss Patients and Importance of Counseling.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is highly prevalent in society, affecting both men and women. More than the sociological meaning of hair loss, it has become a very important part of self-identity or "body image." A psychological concept of body image refers to one's thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behavioral changes related to one's physical looks. In spite of alopecia's common occurrence, it often leads to psychological disturbance and distress. Hair thinning and perceived hair loss also has a very important negative impact on the psyche of the individual. The common emotional aspects associ

The mediating role of maternal warmth in the associations between harsh parental practices and externalizing and internalizing behaviors in Hispanic American, African American, and European American families.

Using data from the add-on 5-year cohort of In-Home Longitudinal Study of preschool aged Children of the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS), we examined the mediating role of maternal warmth in the associations between positive and harsh maternal practices and children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors. The sample consisted of 1,922 low-income Hispanic American, African American, and European American families. For European Americans, the links between maternal psychological aggression and hostility and children's externalizing behaviors were direct. Similarly, for H

Self-compassion is a better predictor than mindfulness of symptom severity and quality of life in mixed anxiety and depression.

Mindfulness has received considerable attention as a correlate of psychological well-being and potential mechanism for the success of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs). Despite a common emphasis of mindfulness, at least in name, among MBIs, mindfulness proves difficult to assess, warranting consideration of other common components. Self-compassion, an important construct that relates to many of the theoretical and practical components of MBIs, may be an important predictor of psychological health. The present study compared ability of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Mindful Attent
