In 16 patients with HELLP syndrome and 10 patients with preeclampsia, laser nephelometric analysis of PEG-precipitated immunocomplexes revealed a decrease in the complement component C4. This is interpreted as a further indication of an immunologic component in the pathogenesis of these disorders.

Twenty vaginal washes (VWs) and ten vaginal mucus (VM) samples from patients with trichomoniasis were examined for the presence of antibody to surface protein immunogens of Trichomonas vaginalis. Fourteen of 20 VWs (70%) and 8 of 10 VM (80%) had immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody (Ab) that reacted in an immunoprecipitation (IP) assay with one iodinated Trichomonas vaginalis surface protein immunogen with a relative molecular mass of 230,000 daltons (230-kDa) (P230). Precipitating antibodies against pigeon bloom antigen and pigeon serum were evaluated as a measure of pigeon exposure in 62 male pigeon breeders compared with 40 unexposed control subjects. We found a combination of highly antigenic bloom extract and a sensitive counter current immunoelectrophoresis suitable for clinical estimation of pigeon exposure. The sensitivity of the test was 86% in never-smokers and 73% in smokers at the 98% specificity level. Smoking significantly reduced the humoral immune response to both antigens.

We studied the relationship between differentiation, transformation, and uPA production in a system of rat thyroid cells in vitro. The fully differentiated FRTL5 cells did not produce detectable amounts of uPA, even after stimulation with phorbol esters, potent inducers of uPA expression. The recent findings on immunodiagnosis of schistosomiasis mansoni have shown that purified Schistosoma mansoni antigens do not provide maximum positivity. Therefore, the authors suggest the use of semi-purified antigens for diagnostic purposes. So far, no serological marker for cured patients as shown by negative stool examination was found. However, a tendency of IgG antibody titre decrease was observed, when egg antigen was used.

Serum C4 and C3 concentration and binding of double-stranded-DNA (ds-DNA) were measured in sera from ninety-nine patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and clinical evidence of nephritis.
