High prevalence of syphilis in a female prison unit in Northeastern Brazil.

Objective To determine the prevalence of syphilis and the associated risk factors in a female prison unit. Methods This was a cross-sectional study including 113 women whom data were collected in two stages: first, blood test to check for syphilis seropositivity; and then collection of information through a form to assess risk situations for sexually transmitted infections. Results Overall, syphilis prevalence was found to be 22.1% among the female prison population (n=25) and 28.6% among pregnant women. A statistically significant relationship was found between syphilis infection and previous

Fatal Rodentborne Leptospirosis in Prison Inmates, South Africa, 2015.

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease. In 2015, leptospirosis was diagnosed in 2 prison inmates in South Africa. Using real-time PCR and DNA sequencing, we identified Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae in rodents and water samples within the prison. Leptospirosis might be frequently underdiagnosed in South Africa.

Incarcerated for a Sex Offense: In-Prison Experiences and Concerns about Reentry.

Using a sample of 3,041 incarcerated men and women, this study examines the impact of being incarcerated for a sex offense and individuals' in-prison experiences on their concerns about reentry into society. Bivariate analyses suggest that being incarcerated for a sex offense is related to greater concerns about housing and fewer concerns about recidivism compared with individuals incarcerated for nonsex offenses. A sex offense conviction is also associated with weaker social bonds, greater relational difficulties, and greater fear of victimization while incarcerated. Multiple regression model

Clozapine Reduces Self-Injurious Behavior in a State Prison Population.

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a common, disruptive, and costly occurrence in U.S. prisons. In this study, we describe the use of clozapine to treat 10 offenders with chronic, repetitive self-injury refractory to other medications and behavioral therapies. The primary diagnosis for all 10 offenders was a personality disorder. Eight of the 10 inmates allowed weekly blood draws and took medication regularly (approximately 95% adherence), whereas two inmates discontinued treatment within the first two weeks. For these eight patients, we compared the number of in-house urgent care visits and out…

The health of Italian troops and prisoners during World War I.

During the Great War, which involved Italy from May 1915 until November 1918, the Italian Army paid an extremely high price in terms of suffering; around 600,000 soldiers died. About 100,000 of these deaths were caused by diseases, mainly infectious ones. The casualties accounted for over one million cases. Epidemics of cholera and petechial typhus were recorded as well as an increase in morbidity due to tuberculosis and malaria, which had shown some minor epidemiological reduction in several regions of Italy during the years preceding the Great War. A large number of soldiers acquired respira

Looking behind the bars: emerging health issues for people in prison.

INTRODUCTION: There are more than 10 million people imprisoned worldwide. These individuals experience a higher burden of communicable and non-communicable disease, mental health and substance misuse problems than the general population and often come from marginalized and underserved groups in the community. Prisons offer an important opportunity for tackling health problems in a way that can deliver benefits to the individual and to the community. This paper focuses specifically on emerging health issues for prisons across the world. SOURCES OF DATA: This paper uses sources of international…

Reflections on researcher departure: Closure of prison relationships in ethnographic research.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom has the highest incarceration rate in Western Europe. It is known that women in prison are a vulnerable female population who are at risk of mental ill-health due to disadvantaged and chaotic life experiences. Accurate numbers of pregnant women held in UK prisons are not recorded, yet it is estimated that 6%-7% of the female prison population are at varying stages of pregnancy and around 100 babies are born to incarcerated women each year. There are limited published papers that document the departure of the researcher following closure of fieldwork with women in…

"Purely for You": Inmates' Perceptions of Prison Visitation by Volunteers in the Netherlands.

Research suggests that prison visitation by volunteers may significantly reduce the risk of recidivism. Community volunteers offer sustained, prosocial support to inmates which may account for these beneficial effects. However, the question of how inmates themselves evaluate volunteer visitation has hardly been studied. This study explores how inmates of Dutch prisons who receive one-on-one volunteer visits experience and value these visits. To that end, semistructured interviews were conducted with 21 inmates across six penitentiaries. These show that the value of volunteer visitation for inm…

Fanning the Flames: Understanding Gang Involvement Among Philippine Prisoners.

Utilizing intensive interview and observational data from inmates in one of the most overcrowded and underresourced jail in Metro Manila, Philippines, this study presents the first in-depth analysis of the factors associated with pangkat (prison gangs) and querna (nongang affiliation) membership. The results suggest that inmates join pangkats to ensure their safety and survival. In contrast, those who remain unaffiliated do so given their negative perceptions of the pangkat, sufficient access to social support, and desire to maintain their preprison identity. Furthermore, these major themes ar

[Supervision, an asset to support the health care function in the prison system].

A sick detainee is a patient like any other. However, the act that causes incarceration can be a sensitive issue, particularly in cases of infanticide, violence, etc. Some situations can generate emotional mobilizations and powerful responses from caregivers. To respond appropriately, supervisions can help caregivers decipher the resonances that cross them and put them at a distance, as a psychologist testifies.

Apple, condom, and cocaine - body stuffing in prison: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Drug dealers and drug users resort to body stuffing to hastily conceal illicit drugs by ingesting their drug packets. This practice represents a medical challenge because rupture of the often insecure packaging can be toxic and even lethal. In an emergency setting, official guidelines are needed to help the medical team decide on the proper treatment. A preliminary observation period is generally accepted but its duration varies from hours to eventual packet expulsion. CASE PRESENTATION: This case involves a 20-year-old white man in detention who claimed to have ingested one cocai

Rapid diagnostic testing to improve access to screening for syphilis in prison.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of on-site rapid treponemal test for syphilis diagnosis in women deprived of liberty in Bolivia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serological tests for syphilis were performed on 219 women deprived of liberty from the San Sebastián prison in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Syphilis was diagnosed using RPR (bioMérieux) and TPPA (Fujirebio) serological tests, and the results were compared to on-site rapid treponemal test (Alere DetermineTM Syphilis TP) in whole blood. Diagnostic performance of two FTA tests were also compared (bioMérieux and Biocientífica). RESULTS: All participan

Developing a Typology for Peer Education and Peer Support Delivered by Prisoners.

Peer interventions delivered for prisoners by prisoners offer a means to improve health and reduce risk factors for this population. The variety of peer programs poses challenges for synthesizing evidence. This article presents a typology developed as part of a systematic review of peer interventions in prison settings. Peer interventions are grouped into four modes: peer education, peer support, peer mentoring, and bridging roles, with the addition of a number of specific interventions identified through the review process. The article discusses the different modes of peer delivery with refer

Characteristics, needs, and experiences of U.S. veterans on a specialized prison unit.

The Veterans Service Unit (VSU) in Connecticut is one of several all-veterans prison units that are being created throughout the United States. This study examined the characteristics, needs, and experiences of veterans on the Connecticut VSU. This study utilized data from a quality improvement survey that was completed by 87 of the 110 veterans on the Connecticut VSU (79% response rate). The majority of veterans on the VSU were white, aged 41-56, never married, and had an honorable or general military discharge making them potentially eligible for Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare upon release
