A Comparison of a Behavioral Feeding Intervention With and Without Pre-meal Sensory Integration Therapy.

This study compared a behavioral feeding intervention with and without pre-meal sensory integration therapy (SIT) in two boys with autism spectrum disorder and severe food selectivity. For both participants, child bite and drink consumption and total intake increased to similar levels with corresponding decreases in inappropriate mealtime behavior (IMB) in both conditions. The SIT condition was then discontinued and both participants continued to exhibit high levels of bite and drink consumption with corresponding low levels of IMB during a non-SIT phase. Caregivers of both participants were t

General Parenting Strategies: Practical Suggestions for Common Child Behavior Issues.

Parents often seek guidance from physicians on child behavior problems. Questions may range from general parenting strategies to managing specific child behaviors. Physicians and their staff can identify problematic parent-child interactions or behaviors within the office setting and assist parents by providing effective monitoring tools for behavior problems. Effective strategies for influencing a child's behavior include positive reinforcement to increase appropriate behavior, extinction (planned ignoring) for most low-level problematic behaviors, and time-out from reinforcement for more pro

Do cognitive distortions explain the longitudinal relationship between life adversity and emotional and behavioural problems in secondary school children?

Research has shown that children exposed to life adversity are at higher risk of negative developmental outcomes than those enduring lower stress levels. Life adversity can lead, among other things, to emotional and behavioural problems. Several factors have been studied to explain this relationship, with several investigators underlining the role of thought structures such as cognitive distortions, which refer to negatively biased information-processing of external events. This can help explain why some individuals characterised by adverse personal life stories interpret ambiguous events in a

Self-concept clarity and the management of social conflict.

In 4 studies we examined the relationship between self-concept clarity and conflict management. Individuals with higher self-concept clarity were overall more active and showed more cooperative problem-solving behavior than people with low self-concept clarity. There were no relationships with contending or yielding. The positive relationship with cooperative behavior was mediated by less rumination (Study 2) and moderated by conflict intensity (Study 3). Specifically, it applied to relatively mild conflicts (Study 3). Finally, Study 4 extended these findings to the group level: Dyad members w

Reinforced variability in animals and people: implications for adaptive action.

Although reinforcement often leads to repetitive, even stereotyped responding, that is not a necessary outcome. When it depends on variations, reinforcement results in responding that is diverse, novel, indeed unpredictable, with distributions sometimes approaching those of a random process. This article reviews evidence for the powerful and precise control by reinforcement over behavioral variability, evidence obtained from human and animal-model studies, and implications of such control. For example, reinforcement of variability facilitates learning of complex new responses, aids problem sol

"Cleaning-up cognition" in triple-response fear assessment through individualized functional behavior analysis.

Improvements in behavioral assessment spurred by the triple-response concept have been overshadowed by a preoccupation with content of assessment and a lack of regard for the context of assessment. The aims of this article are to (a) clarify the imprecise use of the verbal-subjective-cognitive mode and to reinterpret cognitive events based on evidence and methods derived from clinical behavior analysis, (b) discuss the limitations of the triple-response assessment framework, and (c) suggest an alternative functional idiographic approach to assessment and treatment that may direct attention tow

Intellectual abilities and adaptive behavior of children and adolescents with Kabuki syndrome: a preliminary study.

Very little is known about the intellectual abilities and adaptive behavior of individuals who have Kabuki syndrome, beyond the fact that most individuals with this syndrome have mental retardation. To fill this gap, we have completed psychological assessments of 11 children and adolescents with Kabuki syndrome. Results indicated that most of the participants functioned in the range of mild mental retardation, with both intellectual and adaptive behavior in the mildly deficient range and problem behaviors, if any, limited to mild difficulties with inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity a…

Outcomes of childhood conduct problem trajectories in early adulthood: findings from the ALSPAC study.

Although conduct problems in childhood are stably associated with problem outcomes, not every child who presents with conduct problems is at risk. This study extends previous studies by testing whether childhood conduct problem trajectories are predictive of a wide range of other health and behavior problems in early adulthood using a general population sample. Based on 7,218 individuals from the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children, a three-step approach was used to model childhood conduct problem development and identify differences in early adult health and behavior problems. Serious child and adolescent behaviour disorders; a valuation study by professionals, youth and parents.

BACKGROUND: In child and youth care, quantitative estimates of the impact of serious behaviour problems have not yet been made. Such input is needed to support decision making on investments in treatment. The aim of this paper was to elicit valuations of social and conduct disorders in children and adolescents from three different perspectives: professionals, youth, and parents. METHODS: We obtained valuations from 25 youth care professionals, 50 children (age 9-10) without serious behaviour problems and 36 adolescents (age 16-17) with and without serious behaviour disorders, and 46 parents w

Shaping complex functional communication responses.

Response efficiency plays an important role in the initial success of functional communication training (FCT). Although low-effort functional communication responses (FCRs) have been shown to be most effective in replacing problem behavior; more developmentally advanced FCRs are favored later in the treatment process. Attempts to teach these more complex FCRs, however, often lead to the resurgence of problem behavior. In this study, we provide a detailed description of an effective shaping process applied within a changing criterion design to develop complex FCRs from simple FCRs without resur…

Treatment of Challenging Behaviour in Children and Youth With an Intellectual Disability With or Without Autism.

BACKGROUND: Children and youth with an intellectual disability and/or autism exhibit challenging behaviour at significantly higher rates than their peers. The present study explored the treatment modalities accessed to address challenging behaviour among this population as well as predictors of treatment access. METHOD: A sample of 372 caregivers completed the GO4KIDDS survey about their children aged 4 to 20 years (M = 11.37; SD = 3.81). RESULTS: Results revealed that informal behavioural/teaching strategies were the most utilised approach to address challenging behaviour, whereas formal be

Decision-Making Styles, Negative Affectivity, and Cognitive Distortions in Adolescent Gambling.

Evidences from the extant literature suggest that problem gamblers show higher cognitive distortions and reported experiencing higher levels of negative affective states than recreational gamblers. Furthermore, several studies reported that the more the gambling severity, the poorer the performance in behavioral tasks assessing affective decision-making. Although gambling research on decision-making has mostly focused on the functional or dysfunctional outcomes of the decisional process, no study examined the role of decision-making styles in gambling disorder. This study aimed to first invest

[Symptom-centered group therapy for phobias--the problem-oriented workshop in psychotherapy].

Short term psychotherapy is increasingly recognized as a socioeconomic necessity. Problem-oriented treatments, particularly if applied in problem-homogenous groups, are one means of economizing and sometimes even improving psychotherapy. They also require a re-evaluation of the nature of the patient-therapist dyad. The "task-oriented small group" as a basic field of human interaction has been studied intensively in experimental social psychology. Nevertheless, group psychotherapy and behavior therapy have largely neglected group-specific aspects of such variables as cohesion, task-orientation,

How coping styles, cognitive distortions, and attachment predict problem gambling among adolescents and young adults.

Background and aims Recent research suggests that youth problem gambling is associated with several factors, but little is known how these factors might influence or interact each other in predicting this behavior. Consequently, this is the first study to examine the mediation effect of coping styles in the relationship between attachment to parental figures and problem gambling. Methods A total of 988 adolescents and emerging adults were recruited to participate. The first set of analyses tested the adequacy of a model comprising biological, cognitive, and family variables in predicting youth
