The results of dissolution of the "lost" concrements in the common bile duct in 12 patients, who underwent urgent operations for acute complicated cholecystitis, with the use of transdrain administration of miscleron, chloroform, novocaine are analysed. A positive result was obtained in 10 patients.

Yaws is a chronic, relapsing, non-venereally transmitted disease caused by Treponema pertenue. As a result of the WHO mass treatment campaign of the late 1950s, the prevalence in the Solomon Islands fell dramatically. Here the disease was thought to have been eradicated until an outbreak occurred in 1981. In 1984 a mass treatment survey following modified WHO guidelines was carried out. Subsequent to this campaign, yaws recurred and in 1987 a further treatment survey was required. The inclusion of novocain blocade of the round ligament of the liver in the complex of conservative treatment of 312 patients with diseases of the gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and duodenum results in more rapid subsidence of the pain syndrome and a stable therapeutic effect. The simplicity and safety of the method allow to recommend the novocain blocade both in the hospital and in ambulatory conditions, as well as in remote and almost inaccessible localities, on ship vessels in far trips.

Taste and odor have different properties in toxiphobic conditioning. When each is used alone, taste becomes aversive when followed by immediate or delayed poison, while odor becomes aversive only if followed by immediate poison. However, if odor and taste are presented as a compound and followed by delayed poison, then odor does become aversive when tested alone. It is as if taste has potentiated the odor signal. The response of the Na efflux in unpoisoned barnacle fibers to 10 mM theophylline is biphasic; i.e., inhibition is followed by stimulation. The stimulatory response is unaffected by ouabain. Fibers pretreated with ouabain show no transitory inhibition when 10 mM theophylline is applied, but show prompt stimulation the magnitude of which is comparable to that observed with unpoisoned fibers. Malignant hyperpyrexia is a genetically related syndrome that cannot be predicted reliably in advance of administration of anesthesia except by a strong family history. The definitive etiology is unknown, although triggering agents that release calcium from the calcium-storing sarcoplasmic membrane of the muscle cell are highly suspect. As soon as the syndrome is diagnosed, therapy must be prompt, vigorous, and carried out with the same urgency as a cardiac arrest. Specific therapy with dantrolene sodium may prove to be an answer to this serious problem in anesthetic practice.
