BACKGROUND: Leaflet escape is a mode of structural valve failure for mechanical prostheses. This complication previously has been reported for both monoleaflet and bileaflet valve models. We report 2 leaflet escape occurrences observed in 2 patients who underwent valve replacement with a TRI Technologies valve prosthesis.

Cementless surface replacement arthroplasty of the shoulder is designed to replace the damaged joint surfaces and restore normal anatomy with minimal resection of bone. We have used the Copeland shoulder arthroplasty for 14 years. Between 1986 and 2000, 285 surface replacement arthroplasties were implanted in our unit. Bileaflet cardiac prostheses (St. Jude, CarboMedics, Duromedics, Bicarbon, Jyros) have shown a low incidence of complications and good haemodynamic performance. As the leading cause of blindness in the world, corneal diseases are second only to cataracts. However, the epidemiology of corneal disease is complex and includes a wide variety of infectious and inflammatory eye diseases (trachoma), immune sequelae (cicatricial pemphigoid on Lyell's disease) of after trauma (chemical burn).
