Prevalence and predictors of anemia among six-week-old infants in Kwale County, Kenya: A cross-sectional study.

Anemia is a significant public health problem among children worldwide. The etiology of anemia is multifactorial but iron deficiency (ID) is the most common cause of anemia in low- and middle-income countries. ID and anemia in infancy can impair growth and cognitive development. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of anemia among six-week-old infants in Kwale County, Kenya. This cross-sectional study included 424 mother-infant pairs. Structured questionnaires were administered to the mothers to obtain information on socio-demographic variables, maternal charact

Dysregulation of HO-1-SIRT1 Axis is Associated with AngII-Induced Adipocyte Dysfunction.

Angiotensin II (AngII), a component of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS), has been implicated in the dysregulation of adipose tissue function. Inhibition of AngII has been shown to improve adipose tissue function in mice with metabolic syndrome. It is well established that the Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an antioxidant improves oxidative stress and phenotypic change in adipocytes. Molecular effects of high oxidative stress include suppression of Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), which is amenable to redox manipulations. However, the underlying mechanisms by which the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone

Is a 4 J/cm2 PpIX-Weighted Simulated Daylight (SDL-PDT) Dose Still Efficient for Photodynamic Therapy of Actinic Keratosis?

Background: Several solutions are now proposed to provide indoor illumination with so-called artificial white light or simulated daylight (SDL-PDT), resulting in an effective treatment for actinic keratosis (AK). However, the optimal PpIX-weighted light dose is still debated. Integrating the effective irradiance over the irradiation time yields the effective light dose, which is also known as the protoporphyrin IX-weighted light dose and is a key parameter for the efficacy of the treatment. Objectives: The paper aims to report the clinical outcomes of SDL-PDT when using the PpIX-weighted light

Relationship between lead absorption and iron status and its association with oxidative stress markers in lead-exposed workers.

BACKGROUND: The emission of lead (Pb) occurring during the extraction, processing and industrial applications of this element remains a significant environmental risk factor. The absorbability of lead in humans is strongly associated with the general health status of exposed individuals. Existing mineral deficiencies are considered being a predisposition to an increased Pb uptake. Both, iron deficiency and lead poisoning are the major causative factors responsible for the prevalence of anemia within the vulnerable population, especially in children. Although some of the intervention programs o

Prenatal Zinc and Vitamin A Reduce the Benefit of Iron on Maternal Hematologic and Micronutrient Status at Delivery in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Zinc and vitamin A supplementation have both been shown to affect iron status, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, and anemia in animal and human studies. However, evidence on their combined use in pregnancy, in the context of iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation, remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study determined the effects of prenatal zinc, vitamin A, and iron supplementation on maternal hematologic and micronutrient status at delivery in Tanzania. METHODS: We analyzed 2 large randomized controlled trials, using generalized estimating equations, and examined the effect of daily zin

Prenatal Iron Deficiency and Replete Iron Status Are Associated with Adverse Birth Outcomes, but Associations Differ in Ghana and Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature suggests a U-shaped relation between hemoglobin concentration and adverse birth outcomes. There is less evidence on associations between iron status and birth outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the associations of maternal hemoglobin concentration and iron status with birth outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of data from 2 cohorts of pregnant women receiving iron-containing nutritional supplements (20-60 mg ferrous sulfate) in Ghana (n = 1137) and Malawi (n = 1243). Hemoglobin concentration and 2 markers of iron status [

Neuroprotective effect of hemeoxygenase-1/glycogen synthase kinase-3β modulators in 3-nitropropionic acid-induced neurotoxicity in rats.

The present study has been designed to explore the possible interaction between hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) and glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) pathway in 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced neurotoxicity in rats. 3-NP produces neurotoxicity by inhibition of the mitochondrial complex II (enzyme succinate dehydrogenase) and by sensitizing the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor. Recent studies have reported the therapeutic potential of HO-1/GSK-3β modulators in different neurodegenerative disorders. However, their exact role is yet to be explored. The present study is an attempt to investigate the e

Inhibition of VDAC1 prevents Ca²⁺-mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by 5-aminolevulinic acid mediated sonodynamic therapy in THP-1 macrophages.

Ultrasound combined with endogenous protoporphyrin IX derived from 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA-SDT) is known to induce apoptosis in multiple cancer cells and macrophages. Persistent retention of macrophages in the plaque has been implicated in the pathophysiology and progression of atherosclerosis. Here we investigated the effects of inhibition of voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) on ALA-SDT-induced THP-1 macrophages apoptosis. Cells were pre-treated with VDAC1 inhibitor 4,4'-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS) disodium salt for 1 h or downregulated VDAC1 expression by sm

Hepatic expression of heme oxygenase-1 and antioxidant response element-mediated genes following administration of ethinyl estradiol to rats.

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is one of several enzymes induced by hepatotoxicants, and is thought to have an important protective role against cellular stress during liver inflammation and injury. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the role of HO-1 in estradiol-induced liver injury. A single dose of ethinyl estradiol (500 mg/kg, po) resulted in mild liver injury. Repeated administration of ethinyl estradiol (500 mg/kg/day for 4 days, po) resulted in no detectable liver injury or dysfunction. Using RT-PCR analysis, we demonstrate that HO-1 gene expression in whole liver tissue is ele

Iron primes hepatic macrophages for NF-kappaB activation in alcoholic liver injury.

NF-kappaB activation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in cultured hepatic macrophages (HM) may be abrogated by pretreatment of cells with a lipophilic iron chelator, 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one (L1, deferiprone), suggesting a role for iron in this molecular event [M. Lin, M., R. A. Rippe, O. Niemelä, G. Brittenham, and H. Tsukamoto, Am. J. Physiol. 272 (Gastrointest. Liver Physiol. 35): G1355-G1364, 1997]. To ascertain the relevance in vivo of this hypothesis, HM from an experimental model of alcoholic liver injury were examined for the relationship between nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB

Idebenone treatment in Friedreich patients: one-year-long randomized placebo-controlled trial.

The authors carried out a 1-year, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of idebenone in 29 patients with Friedreich ataxia. They found significant reductions of interventricular septal thickness and left ventricular mass in the idebenone group vs the placebo group, with no improvement in other heart ultrasound measures or neurologic condition. The absolute cardiac changes were modest, but the findings suggest that larger trials should assess whether idebenone reduces ventricular hypertrophy in patients with Friedreich ataxia.

Interplay between Heat Shock Protein 90 and HY5 controls PhANG expression in response to the GUN5 plastid signal.

The presence of genes encoding organellar proteins in different cellular compartments necessitates a tight coordination of expression by the different genomes of the eukaryotic cell. This coordination of gene expression is achieved by organelle-to-nucleus or retrograde communication. Stress-induced perturbations of the tetrapyrrole pathway trigger large changes in nuclear gene expression in plants. Recently, we identified HSP90 proteins as ligands of the putative plastid signal Mg-ProtoIX. In order to investigate whether the interaction between HSP90 and Mg-ProtoIX is biologically relevant, we

Combined administration of oxalic acid, succimer and its analogue for the reversal of gallium arsenide-induced oxidative stress in rats.

Gallium arsenide (GaAs), a group III-VA intermetallic semiconductor, possesses superior electronic and optical properties and has a wide application in the electronics industry. Exposure to GaAs in the semiconductor industry is a potential occupational hazard because cleaning and slicing GaAs ingots to yield the desired wafer could generate GaAs particles. The ability of GaAs to induce oxidative stress has not yet been reported. The present study reports the role of oxidative stress in GaAs-induced haematological and liver disorders and its possible reversal overturn by administration of meso-

Topical 'Sydney' propolis protects against UV-radiation-induced inflammation, lipid peroxidation and immune suppression in mouse skin.

BACKGROUND: Propolis is a honeybee product that has been used in traditional medicine for antioxidant, immune-stimulating, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. Here, the potential of the topical application of a crude ethanolic extract of Sydney propolis to protect against UV-radiation-induced impairments associated with an increased risk of photocarcinogenesis has been tested in the hairless mouse. METHODS: Solutions providing between 10 and 200 mg/kg propolis were applied to the skin following UV irradiation. The inflammation from exposure to UV (290-400 nm) was quantitated by measure

Imaging lymphatic function and inflammation response through hypoxia via endogenous biomarker.

SIGNIFICANCE: The lymphatic system, crucial for immune function and fluid balance, is difficult to study due to its nearly invisible channels and passive movements. Despite its importance, real-time, noninvasive lymphatic imaging is limited and often relies on exogenous agents. A largely overlooked feature of the lymphatic system is its natural hypoxia, arising because lymphatic vessels and nodes are distant from oxygen-rich blood and serve as a waste reservoir and from amplifying factors such as inflammation. This hypoxia has been linked to lymphangiogenesis and cancer metastasis. AIM: We in
