The impact of a peer support group for children with rheumatic heart disease in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of a peer-support group on knowledge, quality of life, and social support for children with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). METHODS: Children diagnosed with RHD and receiving 4-weekly injectable penicillin were invited to participate in a monthly support group for 6 months. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included a baseline RHD knowledge assessment, a measure of health related quality of life (HRQOL) (PedsQLTM4.0), and a measure of social support (Hawthorne Friendship Scale). Groups incorporated elements of cooperative play and team building, RHD educati

Diabetes-specific family functioning typology associated with intervention engagement and effects: secondary analyses from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Observationally, family and social support are important for optimal diabetes self-management; however, interventions targeting family/social support have not consistently been effective. A novel, diabetes-specific family functioning typology offers the opportunity to classify types of baseline family functioning to determine for whom family interventions may be effective. PURPOSE: We examined the effects of an intervention by baseline type of family functioning post hoc, to inform differential benefit from interventions. METHODS: Participants were randomized to enhanced treatmen

Karate interventions in children and adolescents: a scoping review of psychosocial and cognitive outcomes.

Karate is one of the most widely practiced forms of martial arts among children and adolescents worldwide. Although its potential psychological benefits are recognized, empirical evidence remains limited and heterogeneous. The present scoping review aimed to map the existing literature on karate interventions targeting psychosocial and cognitive outcomes in school-aged children and adolescents. Four electronic databases (ERIC, PubMed, Scopus, and APA PsycINFO) were searched between March and April 2025, and the search was updated in July 2026. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Cluster-derived profiles of suicidal ideation and quality of life among older adults living alone in South Korea.

Older adults living alone are often regarded as a vulnerable group exposed to psychosocial risks, yet they are not a homogeneous population. This study aimed to identify distinct clusters of psychosocial well-being within this group and examine key determinants using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) framework and data from the Intensive Managed Care for Elderly Living Alone (IMCELA) program. A non-hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted based on scores from the Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS) and the Older People's Quality of Life questionnaire (OPQOL), resulting in thr

The Scarcity of Literature on the Psychological, Social, and Emotional Effects of Gastroparesis in Children.

Gastroparesis (GP) is a chronic, gastric dysmotility disorder with significant morbidity and mortality. The hallmark of GP is the delayed emptying of the contents of the stomach in the absence of any mechanical obstruction. Patients most commonly report chronic symptoms of nausea, vomiting, feeling full quickly when eating, bloating, and abdominal pain. Treatments are limited with relatively poor efficacy. As such, children with GP are at significant risk for the development of psychological co-morbidities. In this paper, we provide a topical review of the scientific literature on the psycholo

Verbal versus physical aggression in Intermittent Explosive Disorder.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is the only adult psychiatric diagnosis for which pathological aggression is primary. DSM-IV criteria focused on physical aggression, but Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) allows for an IED diagnosis in the presence of frequent verbal aggression with or without concurrent physical aggression. It remains unclear how individuals with verbal aggression differ from those with physical aggression with respect to cognitive-affective deficits and psychosocial functioning. The current study compared individuals who met IED criteria with…

The Influence of Neurocognitive Functioning on Proactive Coping Behaviors in Adults With HIV.

Although many can appreciate the life-sustaining benefits of combination antiretroviral therapy, some adults with HIV continue to have difficulty managing physical, neurocognitive, and everyday stressors. Fortunately, some adults with HIV are able to use accumulated resources (e.g., social networks) to help them engage in proactive coping behaviors such as planning and problem solving. Others, however, manage their stressors by engaging in avoidant coping, isolating themselves, or ruminating about the negative aspects of their situation. Perhaps, the capacity to engage in proactive coping may

DSM-5 disruptive mood dysregulation disorder: correlates and predictors in young children.

BACKGROUND: Despite the inclusion of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) in DSM-5, little empirical data exist on the disorder. We estimated rates, co-morbidity, correlates and early childhood predictors of DMDD in a community sample of 6-year-olds. METHOD: DMDD was assessed in 6-year-old children (n = 462) using a parent-reported structured clinical interview. Age 6 years correlates and age 3 years predictors were drawn from six domains: demographics; child psychopathology, functioning, and temperament; parental psychopathology; and the psychosocial environment. RESULTS: The 3-mon

Annotation: the role of prefrontal deficits, low autonomic arousal, and early health factors in the development of antisocial and aggressive behavior in children.

BACKGROUND: This article selectively reviews the biological bases of antisocial and aggressive behavior in children with a focus on low autonomic functioning, prefrontal deficits, and early health factors. RESULTS: Low resting heart rate is thought to be the best-replicated biological correlate of antisocial and aggressive behavior in child and adolescent populations and may reflect reduced noradrenergic functioning and a fearless, stimulation-seeking temperament. Evidence from neuropsychological, neurological, and brain imaging studies converges on the conclusion that prefrontal structural a

Profile of a large sample of patients with social phobia: comparison between generalized and specific social phobia.

This study examines a large cohort of subjects with social phobia, as part of a larger naturalistic and longitudinal study of 711 subjects with anxiety disorders. We focused on 176 subjects who were in an episode of social phobia at intake. We were particularly interested in evaluating the diagnostic distinction between generalized and specific social phobia. We compared these two groups along demographic characteristics, comorbidities, psychosocial functioning (health, role functioning, social functioning, and emotional functioning) and global assessment scores. We found that generalized soci…

Cultivating Strengths: Extracurricular Activity Participation in Relation to Psychological Wellbeing and Social Functioning in Adolescents with and without ADHD.

Extracurricular activities are viewed as important contexts for supporting adolescent wellbeing and functioning. Yet, less is known about how participation relates to wellbeing across adolescence, particularly among youth at heightened risk for social and emotional difficulties, such as those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Guided by a Positive Youth Development framework, this study examined associations between overall and domain-specific extracurricular participation and psychosocial outcomes in a racially diverse sample of 3,578 adolescents (ages 15–18; M = 15.62), in
