Community health worker certification as a pathway to workforce development and career advancement: a qualitative study.

Background: Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in bridging between healthcare systems and underserved communities. Although CHW certification has expanded across the United States, limited research has examined whether certification supports long-term career advancement and workforce development for CHWs themselves. This study examined how certified CHWs perceive the role of certification in shaping career trajectories and long-term workforce retention, with implications for CHW program design and public health workforce policy. A qualitative study using semi-structured intervie

"Debordering" public health: the changing patterns of health border in modern Europe.

According to David Fidler, the governance of infectious diseases evolved from the mid-nineteenth to the twenty-first century as a series of institutional arrangements: the International Sanitary Regulations (non-interference and disease control at borders), the World Health Organization vertical programs (malaria and smallpox eradication campaigns), and a post-Westphalian regime standing beyond state-centrism and national interest. But can international public health be reduced to such a Westphalian image? We scrutinize three strategies that brought health borders into prominence: pre-empting

Selecting high-priority hazardous chemicals for tri-national control: a maximum-utility method applied to Mexico.

The dispersion of persistent, bioaccumulative toxic chemicals poses risks to human health and the integrity of the ecosystem on a continental scale. Mexico, the United States, and Canada sought to add two pollutants to an existing list of four subject to North American Regional Action Plans (chlordane, DDT, mercury, PCBs). Mexican negotiators used results from an internal selection process, applying 14 criteria in five categories-physicochemical, health-endpoint, data quality/quantity, exposure potential, and control feasibility-to a baseline group of over 4,700 substances. Using policy analys

Global ethylene oxide uses in foods and considerations for food safety.

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a sterilant widely used for medical devices, but its use is controversial due to its carcinogenicity. In some countries, EtO is also used to fumigate food to eliminate foodborne pathogens, though this practice is banned in others. National regulations on EtO use in food vary widely; exporting countries prioritize trade facilitation and prevention of foodborne illness, while importing countries emphasize maintaining food safety and promoting domestic public health. These divergent public health priorities present challenges to establishing universal maximum residue limit

Culture-negative bacteria: a blind spot in bacterial pathogen prioritization.

Culture-negative bacteria (CNB), including Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia spp., Orientia tsutsugamushi, and Leptospira spp., are frequent yet underrecognized causes of febrile illness in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although these pathogens cause significant morbidity and mortality, they often remain undetected because standard culture techniques fail to identify them, resulting in systematic underdiagnosis. This narrative review examines existing criteria used in infectious disease guidelines for pathogen recognition and prioritization, applying them to CNB to ass

'It was a ravage!': lived experiences of epidemic cholera in rural Haiti.

INTRODUCTION: A cholera epidemic began in Haiti over 8 years ago, prompting numerous, largely quantitative research studies. Assessments of local 'knowledge, attitudes and practices' relevant for cholera control have relied primarily on cross-sectional surveys. The voices of affected Haitians have rarely been elevated in the scientific literature on the topic. METHODS: We undertook focus groups with stakeholders in the Artibonite region of Haiti in 2011, as part of planning for a public health intervention to control cholera at the height of the epidemic. In this study, we coded and analysed

Human biomonitoring without in-person interaction: public health engagements during the COVID-19 pandemic and future implications.

BACKGROUND: Public health initiatives, including human biomonitoring, have been impacted by unique challenges since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, compounding a decades-long trend of declining public participation. To combat low public participation rates, public health professionals often employ extensive engagement approaches including in-person interactions related to enrollment and sampling, success of which is an essential component of a statistically defensible study. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic challenged public health programs to diversify engagement and sampling approaches

Opioid use disorder: Calling pharmacists to action for better preconception and pregnancy care.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) in women of child-bearing potential is problematic in the United States. This has resulted in increasing risk for adverse maternal outcomes, neonatal abstinence syndrome, fetal and neonatal harm, prolonged hospitalizations, and increased health care costs. Pharmacists in all practice settings have opportunities to provide preconception and pregnancy care to prevent and manage OUD. Given pharmacists' scope of practice and expertise, key roles include assessing patients for OUD; mitigating exposure; educating patients regarding potential infant effects; recommending con

Infectious Disease Control and Management in Ethiopia: A Case Study of Cholera.

Cholera remains a significant public health problem among the vulnerable populations living in many resource-limited settings with poor access to safe and clean water and hygiene practice. Around 2.86 million cholera cases and 95,000 deaths are estimated to occur in endemic countries. In Ethiopia, cholera has been one of the major epidemic diseases since 1634 when the first cholera outbreak was recorded in-country. Several cholera epidemics occurred with recent outbreaks in 2019-2021. Cholera has been often reported as acute watery diarrhea due to limited diagnostic capacity in remote areas in

Knowledge, attitude, and practices toward malaria among hospital outpatients in Nangarhar, Afghanistan: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In the Eastern Mediterranean region, Afghanistan ranks third for the world's highest burden of malaria. The vast majority (95%) of malaria cases in Afghanistan are attributed to Plasmodium falciparum and 5% to Plasmodium vivax. Most cases occur in low-altitude regions, especially in the eastern province of Nangarhar, where agriculture and farming are predominant. To better understand the public sentiment toward malaria, this study aimed to understand the knowledge, attitude, and practice of patients toward malaria who visited public and private hospitals of Nangarhar province. Epidemic investigation of diphtheria in the Republic of Armenia, 1990-1996.

While incidence rates of diphtheria steadily declined in Armenia after World War II, reemergence of the disease in 1990 brought about changes in public health practices and identified resource needs. The Armenian Ministry of Health (MOH) routinely collected diphtheria case reports, as a reportable health outcome. Diphtheria incidence rates increased from 0.02/100,000 in 1993 to 1/100,000 (36 cases) in 1994. The distribution of cases showed that the greatest number of illnesses and deaths occurred among persons 5-14 years old, yet incidence rates among persons 1-4 and 5-14 years old were simila…

Informal PrEP: Rethinking approaches to pharmaceutical access and HIV prevention pathways.

Informal access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is often represented as risky and marginal to formal HIV prevention services. Yet this framing obscures what informal PrEP makes possible and how it functions. This article explores 'informal' PrEP practices, which encompass (i) strategies through which people obtain and use PrEP outside formal medical channels and (ii) networks that facilitate such access. Drawing on recent empirical and theoretical studies, we interrogate informal PrEP as generative practices that challenge binaries between legal/illegal, regulated/unregulated, and forma
