Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) with whole chromosome paints has greatly facilitated the analysis of structural chromosome aberrations and has led to translocations replacing dicentrics as the aberration of choice for many applications. Radiation-associated meningioma in a child is rare. We report a case of xanthomatous meningioma, a rare subtype even in the adult population, which occurred in a 10-year-old boy who had undergone irradiation therapy for ependymoma at the age of 2 years. To determine the feasibility and safety of an intracoronary beta-radiation device in preventing the recurrence of in-stent restenosis (ISR) after successful angioplasty, we studied 37 patients treated with beta-radiation (30-mm strontium-90 source) after angioplasty. This paper examines the underlying factors that contributed to the marginalization of radiation hormesis in the early and middle decades of the 20th century. Our experience reported here, as well as a review of the literature, suggests that radiation therapy can be used in the palliative treatment of XP-related malignancy. However, radiation therapy should be used with caution in XP patients with an anticipated prolonged life expectancy, because the late side effects of ionizing radiation in XP are not well known.
