Studies on the Protective Effect of Silybin Against Low-Dose Radiation-Induced Damage to the Immune System.

With growing public concern about the health effects of low-dose radiation, numerous studies have demonstrated that low-dose radiation can cause damage to the immune system, making intervention measures essential. This study investigated the protective effects of silybin against low-dose radiation-induced immune system damage and its underlying mechanisms at both the cellular and animal levels. At the cellular level, CCK-8 assays, ROS measurements, and RT-qPCR analysis revealed that silybin alleviated the reduction in RAW264.7 cell proliferation, intracellular ROS levels, and inflammatory cyto

Propolis reduced the radiation-induced bystander effect in rat liver exposed to total head irradiation.

In the realm of radiation oncology, the observation of the radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) has raised concerns about off-target tissue effects caused by radiation. The concept of RIBE encompasses the response of non-irradiated tissue to radiation exposure. This study investigated the impact of cranial irradiation on oxidative/nitrosative stress and inflammatory responses in liver tissue. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: sham, irradiation (IR), propolis plus IR, and propolis control. The IR group received an initial 1 ml oral dose of saline via an oro

Radioprotective effect of omeprazole against testicular damage induced by ionizing radiation in mice: An experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced normal tissue damage remains a major concern in radiotherapy, particularly affecting rapidly dividing cells, including those in reproductive tissues. Developing effective radioprotective agents to mitigate this damage is crucial for preserving fertility. OBJECTIVE: The radioprotective effects of omeprazole (OMP) were investigated in adult male mice undergoing external radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, 36 adult male mice (30-35 gr, 6-8 wk old) were divided into 6 groups and orally administered OMP daily via oral gavage for 7 days befor

[A Case of Oligometastatic Recurrent Colorectal Liver Metastasis Effectively Treated with Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy].

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer liver metastasis(CRLM)is commonly managed with surgery or systemic chemotherapy. However, alternative treatments are needed for patients who are not candidates for these standard therapies. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has shown promising results in terms of local control. CASE: A 78-year-old woman underwent low anterior resection for rectal cancer(cStage Ⅲc)followed by 3 hepatic resections for metachronous CRLM. Upon the fourth recurrence, surgery was deemed infeasible due to advanced age, the location of recurrence, and surgical history. Additiona

Effect of UV-C radiation on chemical profile and pharmaceutical application in vitro of Aloe vera oil.

The uncontrolled exposure to ultra violet (UV) radiation have many adverse impacts on human health. UV could be divided into three main classes according to wave length range where UV-C (200-280) is one of these classes. Aloe vera oil is a common product in markets with many cosmetic and medicinal applications. The purpose of this investigation is to expose the oil to UV-C at a dose of 17.0 mJ/cm2 (254 nm) for 0, 30, and 60 min to examine the impact of change of exposure periods on the alteration in chemical composition of Aloe vera oil as well as its various biological activities. Palliative radiation oncology programs: improving value through high-quality and cost-effective care.

An estimated 40% of all radiation treatments are delivered with non-curative intent, and there is strong evidence that this cohort of patients benefits from the early integration of palliative care services. Palliative radiation oncology programs (PROPs) are teams, processes, or systems that were developed to meet these needs. PROPs address specific issues related to the delivery of palliative radiation therapy (PRT) and try to enhance and improve the quality, cost, timeliness, and value of patient care. While PROPs can be tailored to specifically meet any institutional needs, establishing a s

Retinoids in lipofuscin granules from retinal pigment epithelium as biomarkers of the damaging effect of ionizing radiation.

Lipofuscin granules accumulate in the retinal pigment epithelium with age, especially in patients with visual diseases, including progressive age-related macular degeneration. Retinoids (bisretinoids and their oxidation products) are major sources of lipofuscin granule fluorescence. The aim of this work was to analyze the radiation-mediated oxidation of retinoids in lipofuscin granules obtained from the human cadaver eye retinal pigment epithelium. Fluorescent and chromatographic analyses of retinoids were performed before and after irradiation of lipofuscin granules with accelerated protons.

New Cellular Interactions Due to the Radioprotective Effect of N-Acetylcysteine in a Model of Radiation-Induced Pancreatitis.

Ionizing radiation at early stages leads to radiation-induced death of Langerhans islet cells and acinar cells, resulting in the development of acute/subacute pancreatitis. Conducting studies on radiation-induced changes in the pancreas following electron beam irradiation appears to be of great interest, and the evaluation of radioprotective agents for safeguarding normal tissues from radiation is equally important. The aim of this study was to preclinically investigate the antioxidant properties of N-Acetylcysteine in an animal model of radiation-induced pancreatitis over a three-month period

Combination of phytochemicals, including ginsenoside and curcumin, shows a synergistic effect on the recovery of radiation-induced toxicity.

Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat solid cancers located in the pelvis. A considerable number of patients experience proctitis of varying severity, even for a considerable period after radiotherapy. These side effects are often long-lasting or progressively worsen despite multiple therapeutic efforts and are a primary cause of an unexpectedly low quality of life, even after successful cancer treatment. Therefore, this study evaluated the individual and combined efficacy of ginsenoside, curcumin, butyric acid, and sucralfate compounds in treating radiation-induced proctitis. While the candi

Applicability of Gene Expression in Saliva as an Alternative to Blood for Biodosimetry and Prediction of Radiation-induced Health Effects.

As the great majority of gene expression (GE) biodosimetry studies have been performed using blood as the preferred source of tissue, searching for simple and less-invasive sampling methods is important when considering biodosimetry approaches. Knowing that whole saliva contains an ultrafiltrate of blood and white blood cells, it is expected that the findings in blood can also be found in saliva. This human in vivo study aims to examine radiation-induced GE changes in saliva for biodosimetry purposes and to predict radiation-induced disease, which is yet poorly characterized. Furthermore, we e

Cytoprotective Effect of Gallic Acid against Injuries Promoted by Therapeutic Ionizing Radiation in Preosteoblast Cells.

Gallic acid (GA) is a powerful antioxidant extracted from plants of the Brazilian Cerrado. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the occurrence of radiation-induced osteonecrosis in patients treated for head and neck cancer. There is a need to develop research aimed at developing complementary therapies to prevent or reverse bone damage. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of GA in preosteoblasts exposed to therapeutic ionizing radiation. MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells were treated with 10 µM GA and exposed to 6 Gy ionizing radiation. We performed in vitro assays of

Effect of Ultraviolet Radiation and Benzo[a]pyrene Co-Exposure on Skin Biology: Autophagy as a Potential Target.

The skin is the outermost protective barrier of the human body. Its role is to protect against different physical, chemical, biological and environmental stressors. The vast majority of studies have focused on investigating the effects of single environmental stressors on skin homeostasis and the induction of several skin disorders, such as cancer or ageing. On the other hand, much fewer studies have explored the consequences of the co-exposure of skin cells to two or more stressors simultaneously, which is much more realistic. In the present study, we investigated, using mass-spectrometry-bas

Pulsed magnetic field increases the effect of ultraviolet C radiation and thermal shock in aged yeasts.

The study of the effects of the magnetic field (MF) on living matter continues to be a dilemma. Until now, the interaction mechanisms of MF with living matter that explain the observed phenomena are unknown. Despite the existing literature and the multiple effects described to date, there are few published articles that study the combined effect of MF with other physical agents during the cellular aging process. In this sense, the aim of this work is to study whether low frequency and intensity pulsed and sinusoidal MF exposure produce alterations in the cell killing effect of ultraviolet C (U

Sex Differences of Radiation Damage in High-Fat-Diet-Fed Mice and the Regulatory Effect of Melatonin.

The consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) and exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) are closely associated with many diseases. To evaluate the interaction between HFDs and IR-induced injury, we gave mice whole abdominal irradiation (WAI) to examine the extent of intestinal injury under different dietary conditions. Melatonin (MLT) is a free radical scavenger that effectively prevents hematopoietic, immune, and gastrointestinal damage induced by IR. However, its effects on WAI-induced intestinal injury in HFD-fed mice remain unclear. We demonstrated that MLT can promote intestinal structural repai
