RETRACTED: The evaluation of computed tomography scans and ultrasounds in the differential diagnosis of periapical lesions.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Traditionally, the definitive diagnosis of periapical lesion depends on histopathological examination of the tissues, which is impractical in cases planned for nonsurgical treatment. Recently, some authors have used ultrasound with power Doppler and computed tomography in differential diagnosis between a cyst and a granuloma. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the use of computed tomography (CT) scan and ultrasound with power Doppler flowmetry in differential diagnosis of periapical lesions. Twelve periapical lesions were imaged with the help of CT scans and ultrasound with colo

Conventional endodontic therapy of upper central incisor combined with cyst decompression: a case report.

Treatment of a maxillary central incisor with an associated cystic lesion by conventional endodontic therapy combined with decompression is reported. Although small cystic lesions frequently heal simply with endodontic therapy, larger lesions may need additional treatment. If surgical enucleation is elected, other teeth or structures may be damaged unnecessarily. Therefore, a case can be made for first attempting the more conservative treatment of decompression, and a workable protocol for this is presented. In this case, 6 weeks with latex tubing in place and daily irrigation with 0.12% chlor

Combined endodontic and surgical treatment of a three-rooted maxillary first premolar.

A case is reported in which endodontic treatment of a maxillary first premolar was complicated by the fact that the tooth had three roots. One of the roots was completely calcified and therefore could not be negotiated with endodontic files. There was a large periapical lesion associated with the tooth and this was surgically removed. During the surgical procedure a retrograde cavity was prepared on the calcified root using ultrasonic instruments and this was filled using Super EBA cement. Twelve months later the tooth was asymptomatic and the periapical tissues had completely healed.

Periapical biopsy report: an analysis of over a 10-year period.

Biopsy reports of specimens from the apices of 1659 teeth physically present at the time the biopsy was performed were reviewed. The following information was recorded from each report: (a) source of specimen, (b) sex of patient, (c) age of patient, (d) location of tooth associated with lesion, and (e) diagnoses reported. Data were recorded and analyzed by chi-square analysis to note significant differences. This study found that 52% of the lesions were granulomas, 42% cysts, 2% periapical scars, and 4% other disorders. No differences were found between males and females in regard to age and l

First clinical application of octacalcium phosphate collagen composite in human bone defect.

We have previously demonstrated that octacalcium phosphate (OCP) collagen composite (OCP/collagen) promotes bone regeneration in a critical-sized bone defect of a rodent or canine model. This study was designed to investigate the bone regeneration of OCP/collagen in human bone defect as a first clinical trial. Two patients who had a radicular cyst or apical periodontitis consented to participate in our clinical study, and OCP/collagen was implanted into the defects after operation. Radiographic examination showed effective bone healing in each bone defect at 3 or 6 months. Likewise, computed t…

Stimulation of interleukin-1 beta production of human dental pulp cells by Porphyromonas endodontalis lipopolysaccharide.

IL-1 beta is synthesized as an inactive precursor, which is subsequently processed by IL-1 beta converting enzyme (ICE) and found extracellularly as a mature biologically active polypeptide. Also, IL-1 beta has been detected in necrotic and inflamed dental pulp. We examined the IL-1 beta production in human dental pulp (HDP) cells treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Porphyromonas endodontalis (P. e.) isolated from root canals and radicular cyst fluids. We demonstrated that P. e. LPS stimulated IL-1 beta release from HDP cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. However, ICE activity w…

Multiple Radiolucencies of the Jaws in a 6 Year Old.

Radiolucencies of the jaws are a common finding. Mostly, they are isolated findings associated with inflammatory processes and consistent with inflammatory periapical disease, such as periapical cysts and periapical granulomas. If associated with the crowns of unerupted teeth, they may represent dentigerous cysts. However, occasionally, larger lytic/radiolucent lesions are identified; even more infrequently, these radiographic findings may be multiple and concurrent. The purpose of this report is to present the case of a 6-year-old female patient with no known concomitant syndrome who presente

A clinical-radiographic study of allogenic demineralized dentin implants in cystic jaw cavities.

Different implantation materials have been used in cystic cavities in the jaws to accentuate and enhance healing following enucleation. No material has proved to be ideal. In the present study, allogenic demineralized dentin was used in a group of patients with jaw cysts. The observation period varied from 6 to 66 months. The dentin group (33 cases) appeared to have somewhat more immediate postoperative symptoms than the control group (37 cases), but had a lower incidence of operational defects and higher incidence of complete healing of the cyst cavity on radiographic examination.

Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic (UBE) Treatment of Symptomatic Lumbar Facet Cysts After Interspinous Ligamentoplasty: Report of Two Cases and Literature Review.

Interspinous ligamentoplasty (ILP) is an effective, minimally invasive technique used to treat low-grade degenerative spondylolisthesis (DSL) and lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, it may be associated with postoperative complications, including the formation of a facet cyst (FC). Various surgical strategies have been developed to address these clinical challenges. In recent decades, minimally invasive techniques, such as unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE), have gained popularity for achieving adequate decompression while preserving segmental stability. We report two cases of patients wit

Non-surgical Management of a Large Endodontic Lesion Using Diode Laser-Assisted Decompression and Photobiomodulation Therapy: A Case Report.

Introduction: Endodontic periapical (PA) lesions are common sequelae of pulpal infections and often require root canal therapy (RCT) for resolution. Large lesions near vital anatomical structures are more important. A minimally invasive approach involving both diode laser-assisted disinfection and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) might be more suitable as both are less invasive while suppressing deep infection and promoting tissue healing. Case Report: A 58-year-old female patient presented with a mandibular radicular cyst that extended from teeth #25 to #28 with a complicated buccal cortical…

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition in keratocystic odontogenic tumor: possible role in locally aggressive behavior.

The aim of this study is to clarify whether epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is involved in the pathogenesis and development of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT). The expression levels of EMT-related proteins and genes in normal oral mucosa (OM), radicular cyst (RC), and KCOT were determined and compared by real-time quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry. Our data showed that the expression of epithelial markers E-cadherin and Pan-cytokeratin was significantly downregulated in KCOT with upregulation of mesenchymal markers N-cadherin compared to OM and RC. Importantly, TGF-β, a p…

[Lumbar intradural hydatid cyst. Case report].

Hydatid disease is a serious public health problem in developing countries. Cerebrospinal localizations account for 1% of all cases of hydatid disease. The spino-radicular form is exceptional. We report a case of a 25-year-old women with cauda equina. Thoraco-lumbar MRI has showed an intradural process extending from L3 to L5, a low-intensity signal on T1 weighted images and a high-intensity signal on T2 weighted images, which were not enhanced after gadolinium injection. There was no vertebral involvement. After L3 L4 and L5 laminotomy and opening of the dura-matter, multiple vesicles were fo

[Lateral interscalenic approach for tumors of the cervical intervertebral foramina (author's transl)].

The authors report six cases of tumours limited to the cervical inter-vertebral foramen. The patients presented with cervico-brachial neuralgias occasionally accompanied by radicular sensitivo-motor impairment. Radiographs and tomographs of the cervical spine demonstrated enlargement of the intervertebral foramen with bone proliferation depending on the etiology and provided in easy diagnosis in all the cases. A myelogram showed the absence of extension into the spinal canal thus allowing distinction from the group of dumbell tumors. In the six cases vertebral angiography gave information rega
