Loss of radial palmar tilt in malunion of Colles' fractures alters wrist biomechanics, abnormally loading the tenuous dorsal ligament complex. This can result in midcarpal instability with synovitis, pain, weakness, and possible articular degeneration. An osteotomy to correct radius alignment using a trapezoidal corticocancellous bone graft has been devised. The graft is harvested from the dorsal radius adjacent to the osteotomy and malunion site. When turned 90 degrees, a properly designed trapezoidal graft restores radial length, inclination, and palmar tilt in one step. Functional results i

INTRODUCTION: Intra-articular distal radius fractures require accurate anatomical reduction, articular congruity, and stable fixation to restore wrist function and preserve biomechanics. The extended flexor carpi radialis (eFCR) approach provides extensile exposure for complex fracture patterns.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included 30 adults with closed intra-articular fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation through the eFCR approach with volar locking plate fixation from April 2024 to June 2025. Functional outcome was assessed by disabilities …

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures (DRF) often serve as the initial indication of bone mineral disease. This study aims to determine the extent to which the risk of subsequent fragility fractures can be reduced by initiating anti-osteoporotic therapy after initial presentation of a DRF.
METHODS: This study utilized TriNetX, an online database with de-identified patient data from 79 US healthcare organizations. Females above the age of 50 were categorized based on receiving initial anti-osteoporotic treatment within a year of the DRF. Group characteristics, antiosteoporosis medications, and bone…

BACKGROUND: An update on the epidemiology of distal radius fractures in the United States is necessary, particularly as the elderly population grows. Additionally, age and frailty have been associated with complications following surgical fixation of DRFs. Herein, we utilize the National Trauma Data Bank, a robust nationwide resource, to investigate the relationship between demographics, comorbidities, injury and fracture characteristics, and admission details.
METHODS: Patients with isolated distal radius fractures were identified from the National Trauma Data Bank (2016-2019) according to I…

PURPOSE: The advent of locking compression plate (LCP) has provided convenient and secure fixation of distal ulna fractures. This study was performed to evaluate the functional and clinical outcomes following LCP distal ulna plate fixation of irreducible or unstable distal ulna fractures with concomitant distal radius fractures.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 17 patients who had been treated with LCP distal ulna plates for distal ulna fractures was performed. The average age of the patients was 58.9 years (range 21-87 years), and the mean follow-up period was 15 months (range 12-20 months).…

We performed primary excision of the ulnar head on 23 patients over 70 years of age with severe comminuted fractures of both the distal radius and ulna. The distal radius fracture was fixed rigidly with a volar locking plate, and the ulnar head was resected at the fracture site. All the distal radial fractures united without major complications. The mean wrist flexion/extension arc was 122°, the mean pronation/supination arc was 164°, and grip strength was 69% of that on the contralateral side. All patients returned to their daily activities within a short time without any additional surgical

BACKGROUND: Volar plate fixation with use of either a locking plate or a neutralization plate has become increasingly popular among surgeons for the treatment of dorsally comminuted extra-articular distal radial fractures. The purpose of the present study was to compare the relative stability of five distal radial plates (four volar and one dorsal), all of which are commonly used for the treatment of dorsally comminuted extra-articular distal radial fractures, under loading conditions simulating the physiologic forces that are experienced during early active rehabilitation.
METHODS: With use

K-wire stabilization and casting of unstable or intraarticular fractures of the distal radius has proven to be an effective method of treatm … es 1.6 mm on the other hand showed 82% initial stability. From May to September 1988 typical distal radius fractures in 11 patients have been stabilized with Biofix-rods. The result of primary reduction could be obtained in all cases. These first experiences suggested, that stabilization of distal radius fractures with Biofix-rods might alternatively be performed …

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are the most common of all fractures. Optimal treatment is still debated. Previous studies report substantial changes in treatment trends in recent decades. Few nation-wide studies on distal radius fracture epidemiology and treatment exist, none of which provide detailed data on patient and injury characteristics, fracture pattern and mortality. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology, fracture classification, current treatment regimens and mortality of distal radius fractures in adults within the context of a large national register study.

Distal radius fracture (DRF) usually adopts static fixation method, which often leads to complications such as abnormal fracture healing and pressure injury. The reason lies in the lack of real-time regulation of fixed pressure and biomechanical feedback, which affects the functional recovery. Our team designed an intelligent and adaptive orthopedic equipment. Based on the patient's personalized three-dimensional (3D) printing architecture, the equipment system realizes light and accurate adaptation, and embeds a series of thin film pressure sensors in key anatomical parts to continuously quan

BACKGROUND: Diametaphyseal radius fractures (DMRF) in children pose a challenge to pediatric traumatologists. Numerous techniques to address the problems of conventional osteosynthesis have been published. Still, immobilization in a cast is the treatment of choice in most cases. The aim of this study was to assess risk factors for the failure of conservative treatment in DMRFs.
METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective study of 270 patients with conservatively treated DMRFs. Demographic data and radiologic fracture characteristics were assessed. Univariate and multivariate regression an…

Flexor tendon injuries have been reported in association with distal radius fractures. These are usually chronic in nature, and acute flexor tendon injuries are rare. When these do occur, they tend to be at the level of the fracture and are thought to be caused by direct laceration from the sharp bone edges of the fracture site. There are no reports of injuries more proximal to the fracture site at the musculotendinous junction. We present a patient who sustained a distal radius fracture with associated complete avulsions of the flexor digitorum superficialis tendons to the middle and ring fin…
