Epidemiology of retinal disease.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinal disease (DRD), retinal vascular occlusion, retinal detachment, pathologic myopia, macular hole, and epiretinal membrane are major causes of blindness and visual impairment globally. Studies on the epidemiology of these retinal diseases exhibit significant heterogeneity in terms of study design, population, timeframe, and disease definition. Recent data suggest increases in the prevalence and/or incidence of AMD, DRD, retinal vein occlusion, and pediatric myopia, but projecting the future epidemiologic burden of these disorders is difficu…

Retinal Pigment Epithelial Proliferation Secondary to Retinal Ischemia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Antiphospholipid syndrome is one of the most common causes of acquired hypercoagulable conditions which is correlated with ocular conditions not least of which is retinal ischemia due to arterial or venous occlusive insults. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of unilateral retinal ischemia in the setting of combined central retinal artery and vein occlusion with associated proliferation of retinal pigment epithelium. The patient was worked-up for the etiology of her presentation which was found to be antiphospholipid syndrome. CONCLUSION: Although pigment epithelial prolifer

Detection of paravascular retinal cysts before using OCT in a highly myopic patient.

PURPOSE: We describe a case of high myopia who developed paravascular retinal rarefaction generated by vitreoretinal adhesion on retinal vessels detected using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: A 31-year-old man received a regular ophthalmologic examination for high myopia including detailed fundus examination and OCT. RESULTS: Detailed fundus examination revealed retinal rarefaction and fissure-like findings alongside the superior temporal retinal artery and vein in the right eye. OCT images revealed vitreoretinal adhesions on the retinal artery and a paravascular cystoid space i

Central Retinal Vessel Trunk Caliber Changes After Short-term Intraocular Pressure Elevation.

PRECIS: After a short-term intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation, the central retinal vein caliber may be widened at lower IOP rise levels, while be compressed at higher IOP rise values. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the calibers of the central retinal vein trunk (CRVT) and central retinal artery trunk (CRAT) trunk during a short-term elevation of IOP. METHODS: A prospective observational study. Acute primary angle-closure suspects underwent a dark room prone provocative test (DRPPT) for 2 hours. Before and at the end of the test, tonometry, swept-source opt…

[Central vein thrombosis in younger patients].

BACKGROUND: Vein thromboses are not seldom, even in young patients. The pathogenesis of such perfusion disorders is poorly understood-accordingly, it is difficult to choose therapy specific to the causality and appropriate prophylaxis against recurrence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study we analyzed the clinical findings of seven patients under 45 years of age who suffered a retinal vein occlusion in the past two years. RESULTS: Anatomical changes of the vessels in carotis and ophthalmica regions were not found, as was the case in hemostasis and fibrinolysis, as well. However, a…

Closed microsurgery for the sequelae of neovascularisation from veno-occlusive retinopathies.

Our experience of closed microsurgery for vitreous haemorrhage and/or traction retinal detachment complicating extraretinal neovascularisation after retinal vein occlusion or Eales' and Behçet's periphlebitis is discussed. Many of these eyes represented a relatively simple management problem, but the visual outcome was often compromised by intrinsic macular damage. Some eyes had complicated vitreoretinal relationships which presented unexpected technical difficulties, while persisting retinal ischaemia posed the risk of rubeosis iridis or post-operative vitreous haemorrhage unless scatter endo…

[Retinal vascular occlusion in antithrombin III deficiency].

Deficiency of Antithrombin III (AT III), which is one of the main inhibitors of blood coagulation, may lead to severe thrombosis and embolism. The authors detected AT III deficiency in two patients with retinal vessel occlusion. Both patients were otherwise healthy. One had recurrent retinal vein thrombosis, the other cilioretinal occlusion. To the authors' knowledge, only one case of retinal vessel occlusion with AT III deficiency has been reported in literature. Furthermore, in the patients reported here retinal vessel occlusion may have been caused by AT III deficiency, which has considerab…

Tuberculous retinal vasculitis.

A case of central retinal vasculitis associated with culture proven active pulmonary tuberculosis is presented. The ocular condition responded dramatically to systemic isoniazid and ethambutol. The clinical picture of central retinal vein occlusion should alert the physician to the possibility of an inflammatory etiology. Appropriate studies to rule out treatable inflammatory conditions should be ordered.

Artificial Intelligence-Based Uveitis Diagnosis Through Retinal Vasculature Analysis: A Paradigm Shift in Ocular Tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of uveitis is complex and often requires a series of investigations. Here, we utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for the quantitative analysis of retinal vasculature parameters from fundus photographs to differentiate confirmed ocular tuberculosis (TB) from QuantiFERON (QFT)-positive uveitis without another identifiable cause and ocular toxoplasmosis. METHODS: Medical records and stored fundus images of patients with uveitis from a cohort at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Indonesia, were analyzed. Three groups of patients were included: confirmed ocul

Venous Nicking Without Arteriovenous Contact: The Role of the Arteriolar Microenvironment in Arteriovenous Nickings.

IMPORTANCE: Arteriovenous nickings (AVNs) in the retina are the cause of retinal vein occlusions and are also surrogates of cerebrovascular aging. The prevalent mechanistic model of AVNs stating that arteries crush veins remains somewhat unchallenged despite the lack of evidence other than fundus photographs. Here, we observed that venous nicking may be observed in the absence of physical contact with an arteriole. OBSERVATIONS: This observational study, conducted from January 2013 to September 2014, included 7 patients showing remodeling of a venous segment close to a retinal arteriole witho…

Effects of intraocular treatments for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) retinitis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Intraocular infection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may cause severe visual loss. However, it is relatively rare, and there is no consensus on its treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old woman complained of a right-eye floater and exhibited a unilateral exudative change along the retinal veins at the Department of Ophthalmology, St. Luke's International Hospital.
