Tissue injury transiently silences miRNA-dependent posttranscriptional gene silencing in its effort to unleash adult tissue repair. Once the wound is closed, miRNA biogenesis is induced averting neoplasia. OBJECTIVE: Several studies have suggested an increased frequency of variants in the gene encoding angiogenin (ANG) in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Interestingly, a few ALS patients carrying ANG variants also showed signs of Parkinson disease (PD). Furthermore, relatives of ALS patients have an increased risk to develop PD, and the prevalence of concomitant motor neuron disease in PD is higher than expected based on chance occurrence. We therefore investigated whether ANG variants could predispose to both ALS and PD.

Angiogenin is a protein originally isolated as an inducer of new blood vessel growth, and it has been reported to be an effective substrate for tumor cell adhesion. To determine the association between levels of major basic protein and onset of preterm labor, plasma levels of major basic protein were measured in 13 women from weeks 22 to 41 of gestation. The effects of multiple infections with Trichinella spiralis on the levels of eosinophil major basic protein (MBP), creatine kinase (CK), and leucocytes were studied in the guinea pig. Partial lipodystrophy is characterized by abnormal fat distribution, impaired thermogenesis, systemic inflammation, and diminished DICER1 expression in adipose tissue.
