INTRODUCTION: We aimed to examine impact of trauma center (TC) surgical stabilization of rib fracture (SSRF) volume on outcomes of patients undergoing SSRF.
METHODS: Blunt rib fracture patients who underwent SSRF were included from ACS-TQIP2017-2021. TCs were stratified according to tertiles of SSRF volume:low (LV), middle, and high (HV). Outcomes were time to SSRF, respiratory complications, prolonged ventilator use, mortality.

We report the case of a 71-year-old male who initially presented with urosepsis and was found to have a rib fracture of his right 6th rib with a flail segment and an associated abscess. Given the concern for infection, surgical rib fixation with titanium plating was not pursued during the washout of his abscess and instead, he successfully underwent rib fracture stabilization with bilateral suture transfixation. He was continued on a prolonged course of antibiotics for Klebsiella pneumonia osteomyelitis and was discharged uneventfully with optimal pain control and adequate respiratory effort.

Pleural effusion is a relatively common condition encountered in the pediatric emergency department. Evaluation of pleural effusion in the emergency department typically includes advanced imaging such as computer tomography or ultrasound, as well as diagnostic thoracocentesis. We report a case of a 10-year-old female with a rib spur at the anterolateral left sixth rib that caused a hemothorax, pneumothorax, and diaphragmatic injury. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and resection of the rib spur. The procedure was well-tolerated without any complications.

A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital on the fifth day after a tumble. Computed tomography showed multiple rib fractures, massive hemothorax and diaphragmatic hernia in the left side of the chest and the emergency operation was performed. About 20 mm sized omental diaphragmatic hernia was found and repaired with direct suture. The hernia was thought to be caused by fractured rib. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the 11th day after the operation.
