Larvicidal and Biochemical Effects of Ipomoea carnea (Convolvulaceae) Methanolic Leaf Extract Against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Under Laboratory Conditions.

The larvicidal and biochemical effects of Ipomoea carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) methanol leaf extract against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were determined under standard laboratory conditions. The second and fourth instar larvae of S. frugiperda were fed on castor bean leaves (Ricinus communis) treated with different concentrations (1-5%) of I. carnea methanolic leaf extract. The mortality percentage significantly increased in correlation with both concentration and exposure time compared to control. Second instar larva of S. frugiperda was more susceptible…

The importance of study duration and spatial scale in pathogen detection-evidence from a tick-infested island.

Ticks (Acari: Ixodoidea) are among the most common vectors of zoonotic pathogens worldwide. While research on tick-borne pathogens is abundant, few studies have thoroughly investigated small-scale spatial differences in their occurrence. Here, we used long-term cloth-dragging data of Ixodes ricinus and its associated, known and putative pathogens (Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., Borrelia miyamotoi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Bartonella spp., Babesia spp., and tick-borne encephalitis virus, TBEV) from a small, well-studied island in southwestern F…

Stem-cell driven cancer: "hands-off" regulation of cancer development.

Ecological factors, host characteristics and/or interactions among microbes may all shape the occurrence of microbes and the structure of mi … bacterial microbiota of one of the most important disease vectors in Europe, the sheep tick Ixodes ricinus, along ecological gradients in the Swiss Alps. Although our study captured extensive environmental variation along elevational clines, the explanatory power of such large-scale ecological factors was comparably weak, suggesting that tick-specific tr …

First detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and enzootic focus of Theileria orientalis in cattle from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Theileria orientalis is a tick-borne intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite of cattle causing oriental or benign theileriosis. It has a worldw … onotic subcluster, indicating a ruminant-associated lineage maintained primarily in wildlife-Ixodes ricinus cycles. The 18S rRNA gene sequencing showed subtle regional clustering of T.orientalis isolates. This is the first molecular confirmation of A. phagocytophilum in cattle from Eastern Herzegovina and identification of possible enzootic foci of T. ori …

Integrated proteomic and functional mass spectrometry workflow for comprehensive ricin characterization at trace levels.

The plant toxin ricin, derived from the castor bean plant Ricinus communis, is a major bioterrorism agent that requires analytical strategies to confirm both toxin identity and functionality. Ricin consists of an enzymatically active A chain (RTA) and a galactose-binding B chain (RTB) linked by an inter-chain disulfide bond. Conventional bottom-up mass spectrometry identifies ricin using proteotypic peptides from the individual chains but does not establish whether the toxin is present as an intact, active holotoxin. Here, we present an integrated workflow that enables structural and functiona…

Environmental hazard of tick-borne diseases in urban and peri-urban sites in an endemic area of eastern France.

The occurrence of the Ixodes ricinus tick in forested and rural areas is well documented across Europe; however, its presence in urban environments remains less investigated. This study focused on the city of Strasbourg, located in eastern France, a region endemic for ticks and tick-borne diseases, to identify high-risk ecosystems along an urbanization gradient. Questing ticks were collected from eight sites: four urban parks, a botanical garden, and three peri-urban forests. A total of 880 ticks were collected, and 657 nymphs were analyzed for the presence of the pathogens Borrelia burgdorfer…

[Lyme's disease. A critical analysis of its presence in Argentina].

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease (LD) is caused by bacteria of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex and transmitted by the bite of ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. To date, no autochthonous cases have been reported in Argentina. Its diagnosis involves serological tests included in a two-step algorithm. The study proposes to report the results of laboratory tests, describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of consultations received due to suspected LD, and critically evaluate the scientific evidence on alleged autochthonous cases of Lyme in Argentina. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fro…

Review of ticks attacking domestic dogs and cats, and their epidemiological role in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens in Poland.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Progressive climate change plays a major role in the expansion of tick populations, as well as the transmission of tick-borne disease pathogens (TBPs) to humans and animals throughout the world. Zoonoses are a growing environmental problem of great importance for public health. In Poland, domestic dogs and cats are mainly infested by Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes crenulatus, Ixodes hexagonus, Ixodes rugicollis and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks from the Ixodidae family. Other tick species, such as I. apronophorus and Haemaphysalis concinna, recorded sporadically on domestic…

The In Vitro Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato: Shedding Light on the Known Unknowns.

Human Lyme borreliosis (LB) represents a multisystem disorder that can progress in stages. The causative agents are transmitted by hard ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex that have been infected with the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Today, LB is considered the most important human tick-borne illness in the Northern Hemisphere. The causative agent was identified and successfully isolated in 1982 and, shortly thereafter, antibiotic treatment was found to be safe and efficacious. Since then, various in vitro studies have been conducted in order to improve our knowledge of the acti…

Babesiosis in Southeastern, Central and Northeastern Europe: An Emerging and Re-Emerging Tick-Borne Disease of Humans and Animals.

There is now considerable evidence that in Europe, babesiosis is an emerging infectious disease, with some of the causative species spreadin … rise in the coming years. This is because of the widespread and longer seasonal activity of Ixodes ricinus as a result of climate change and because of the more extensive use of better molecular diagnostic methods. Bovine babesiosis has a re-emerging potential because of the likely loss of herd immunity, while canine babesiosis is rapidly expanding in ce …

Use of Wild Ungulates as Sentinels of TBEV Circulation in a Naïve Area of the Northwestern Alps, Italy.

Wild and domestic animals can be usefully employed as sentinels for the surveillance of diseases with an impact on public health. In the case of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), the detection of antibodies in animals can be more effective than screening ticks for detecting TBEV foci, due to the patchy distribution of the virus. In the Piedmont region, northwestern Italy, TBEV is considered absent, but an increase in tick densities, of Ixodes ricinus in particular, has been observed, and TBEV is spreading in bordering countries, e.g., Switzerland. Therefore, we collected sera from wild ung…

[Lyme Disease - Epidemiology and Pathophysiology].

Lyme Disease - Epidemiology and Pathophysiology Abstract. Lyme disease is a zoonosis caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and its genospecies. Its distribution includes Europe and some parts of North America. The dominant vector in Europe is the tick Ixodes ricinus. Its three developmental stages (larvae, nymph, adult) take blood meals from small rodents, birds, and deer, some of which may also host B. burgdorferi. This is how the majority of the ticks become infected. Transmission of the pathogen to a new host occurs via tick saliva at the next blood meal, which induces phenotypical …

Tick populations from endemic and non-endemic areas in Germany show differential susceptibility to TBEV.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is endemic in twenty-seven European countries, transmitted via the bite of an infected tick. TBEV is the causative agent of one of the most important viral diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). In Germany, 890 human cases were registered between the years 2018-2019. The castor bean tick, Ixodes ricinus, is the TBEV vector with the highest importance in Central Europe, including Germany. Despite the nationwide distribution of this tick species, risk areas of TBEV are largely located in Southern Germany. To increase our understanding of TBEV-tick inte…
