Isolation of Icterohaemorrhagiae from Microtus monte belli trapped at the Nagaoka area, Niigata Prefecture in Japan.

Three strains of leptospira were isolated from field rodents on the occasion of scrub typhus survey on the Nagaoka, Kurojo, Kamikawanishi area, Niigata Prefecture in September 1961. Out of 10 Microtus montebelli 3 strains of leptospira by means of heart puncture in febrile stage from guinea pigs. They were identified as icterohaemorrhagiae by cross-agglutination-lysis and a cross absorption tests. It was the first report of icterohaemorrhagiae in Microtus montebelli in Japan.

Structure of natural foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis and its relationship to regional morphology.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is still a public health problem in Central Asia. To control the outbreaks, different control measures are required in different regions and comprehensive information is required about natural foci. The term landsaft, used by Soviet geographers to denote particular geographical regions, is defined and this concept is used in examining the natural focality of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the south of the Turkmen SSR.The main reservoir species in this area was Rhombomys opimus, and the disease was transmitted mainly by Sergentomyia arpaklensis, Phlebotomus

Global prevalence of Giardia infection in nonhuman mammalian hosts: A systematic review and meta-analysis of five million animals.

BACKGROUND: Members of the Giardia genus are zoonotic protozoan parasites that cause giardiasis, a diarrheal disease of public and veterinar … in nonhuman mammals was estimated at 13.6% (95% CI: 13.4-13.8), with the highest rates observed in Rodentia (28.0%) and Artiodactyla (17.0%). Herbivorous (17.0%), semiaquatic (29.0%), and wild (19.0%) animals showed higher prevalence rates. A decreasing prevalence trend was observed over time (β = -0.1036477, 95% CI -0.1557359 to -0.0515595, p < 0.000). A …

Molecular Prevalence and Genotype Detection of Babesia microti in Multiple Wild Rodent Species and Suncus murinus From Subtropical Mountainous Regions of South-Central Zhejiang, China.

Human babesiosis, an emerging zoonosis with ongoing geographic expansion, is primarily caused by Babesia microti, a tick-borne apicomplexan parasite that resides within host erythrocytes. While small mammals serve as its recognized reservoir hosts, the relative contribution of sympatric wild rodents and shrews in subtropical mountain endemic areas of Eastern China remains poorly characterized. In South-central Zhejiang, an endemic focus of human babesiosis, systematic data on local small-mammal hosts remain limited. In this study, 630 small mammals, comprising six rodent species and the shrew

Oxidative and Inflammatory Mechanisms Induced by Intermittent Hypoxia Leading to Vascular Alterations in Rodents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the related intermittent hypoxia (IH) are recognized as major cardiovascular risk factors. In a previous meta-analysis, we confirmed the impact of IH on structural and functional remodeling of vessels in rodent models of IH. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the molecular mechanisms related to vascular remodeling induced by IH and to analyze the impacts of patterns of exposure on the effect of IH. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE and included 52 articles, among them 44 concerning wild ty

Gut microbiota response to Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in wild rodents: enhanced vitamin B and K2 biosynthesis pathways.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi (E. bieneusi) is a pathogenic microsporidian that affects immunocompromised individuals, including those with HIV, and represents a major cause of diarrhea. It can severely impact human health, causing gastrointestinal disease, nutritional deficits, and life-threatening complications. However, the microbial mechanisms by which E. bieneusi affects host nutrition are not well understood. Wild rodents have long been considered valuable models for studying human diseases due to similarities in gut microbiota dynamics and immune responses, making them particularly relevant f

Hantavirus preparedness at human-rodent interfaces: lessons from China's HFRS control and Andes virus transmission in mobile populations.

Hantaviruses are globally distributed reservoir-associated viruses that cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), mainly in Eurasia, and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS; also termed hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, HPS), mainly in the Americas. Most human infections arise from exposure to rodent-contaminated environments, so clustered disease may reflect shared environmental exposure rather than interpersonal transmission. This Review uses China's long-term HFRS experience as a central case study for interface-centred preparedness. China demonstrates that sustained surveilla

Rodent and Ectoparasite-Borne Disease Surveillance Support During the Balikatan Exercise in 2024 and 2025.

Zoonotic diseases are a primary threat to military readiness during deployments in the Asia-Pacific region. To characterize these risks, we conducted a multi-site, multi-year 'One Health' biosurveillance study during the Balikatan (BK) 2024 and 2025 exercises in the Philippines, sampling rodents, ectoparasites, and the environment at four key training locations on Luzon Island. A comprehensive biosurveillance study at four BK training sites revealed distinct, evolving, and site-specific zoonotic disease risks that require tailored health protection strategies. The risk is most acute at Clark A

Emergence of a Highly Pathogenic Leptospira Serogroup 56601 Revealed by 15-Year Surveillance and Experimental Validation in a Rural Area of Zhejiang Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a globally important zoonosis maintained by chronically infected animal reservoirs, yet its long-term eco-epidemiological dynamics remain poorly understood. Southeast China has historically been an endemic region, but changing climate and land use may be reshaping Leptospira transmission. METHODS: We conducted 15-year longitudinal surveillance (2009-2024) in Pan'an County, Zhejiang Province, integrating field sampling of rodents and other hosts, serogroup identification, multilocus sequence typing, and experimental mouse infection. Annual rainfall, host data, and

Sparse Labeling, Rapid Clearing, and Native Fluorescence Light Sheet Imaging in the Developing Rodent Cerebellum.

This protocol outlines plasmid delivery via in utero electroporation, rapid tissue clearing using CUBIC, and light sheet microscopy with optimizations for endogenous fluorescent protein imaging to label and image neuronal cells and their projections in their native topographic context of the intact developing rodent cerebellum. This technique enables the study of neuronal migration, circuit architecture, and connectivity of cerebellar neurons, particularly focusing on Purkinje cells.

Outcome measures in rodent models for spinal cord injury and their human correlates.

Pre-clinical research is intended to inform clinical research, however, communication between these researchers is lacking. A better understanding of what can be learned from animal and human models and what cannot, is essential. This includes a better understanding of where underlying constructs in outcome measures in rodents and humans align and where they diverge to improve dialogue between human and animal researchers. The goal of this review is to promote an understanding of similarities and differences in outcome measures and encourage consideration of these differences when planning, in
