Food insecurity and at-home vegetable and sugar-sweetened beverage availability: TX Sprouts randomized controlled trial.

Food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages both influence dietary intake. However, most research on food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages is cross-sectional, which is problematic as both change frequently. Therefore, this study assessed how changes in food insecurity were associated with changes in the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages among those in the intervention and control groups of TX Sprouts. Parents who participated in TX Sprouts, a gardening, cooking, and nu

Arthroscopic technique for patch augmentation of rotator cuff repairs.

The patient is placed in the lateral position, and an arthroscopic cuff repair is performed according to standard techniques. The line of repair is usually in the shape of a "T" or an "L." The repair is viewed through the lateral portal, with fluid inflow through the scope. Mattress sutures are placed in the anterior and posterior portions of the cuff, with respect to the line of repair, just medial to the most medial point of the tear. The sutures are placed in accordance with margin convergence suture passing methods. Next, 2 double-stranded suture anchors are placed into the lateral aspect

Drought exposure and severe mental distress among adolescent girls and young women in Lesotho: the moderating role of food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: Climate-related shocks such as drought are increasingly recognised as threats to mental health, yet evidence remains limited on how these stressors affect adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Lesotho. This study examines the association between drought exposure and severe mental distress among AGYW in Lesotho and assesses whether household food insecurity moderates this relationship. METHODS: We analysed nationally representative cross-sectional data from 7,101 AGYW aged 13–24 years drawn from the 2018 Lesotho Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. Severe mental distress

Early life food insecurity in male rats impairs memory function during adulthood.

Approximately 14% of U.S. households are food insecure. The neurocognitive and metabolic impacts of unpredictable food access during early-life periods of development are poorly understood. To address these gaps we devised a novel rat model of food insecurity to control the timing, type, and quantity of accessible food using programmable feeders. Male rats were divided into 3 groups: Secure-chow (SC), a control group given 100% of daily estimated caloric intake, distributed evenly across 4 daily meals of standard chow at set mealtimes; Secure-mixed (SM), a 2nd control group identical to the SC

Attachment as a mechanism influencing end-of-life communication: An analogue investigation.

Talking about dying when faced with end-of-life may be important for achieving optimal outcomes for young people and their families. Given the lack of research on young people's communication around end-of-life and death, this analogue study examined the role of attachment theory in conversations about dying. Experiment 1 assessed attachment security of 80 healthy young adults and randomised them to receive either an induction that raised awareness of one's attachment figures or a neutral induction, and then primed them with an imagined scenario where they were diagnosed with an incurable illn

Force Profiles of Single Ventricle Atrioventricular Leaflets in Response to Annular Dilation and Leaflet Tethering.

We sought to understand how leaflet forces change in response to annular dilation and leaflet tethering (LT) in single ventricle physiology. Explanted fetal bovine tricuspid valves were sutured onto image-derived annuli and ventricular mounts. Control valves (CON) were secured to a size-matched hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS)-type annulus and compared to: (1) normal tricuspid valves secured to a size-matched saddle-shaped annulus, (2) HLHS-type annulus with LT, (3) HLHS-type annulus with annular dilation (dilation valves), or (4) a combined disease model with both dilation and tethering

Relevant landmarks to navigate the suture locations for the arthroscopic triangular fibrocartilage complex foveal reattachment.

INTRODUCTION: Key step of arthroscopic triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) foveal reattachment is to suture dorsal and palmar deep components of radioulnar ligaments (RULs) to the fovea of ulnar head to ensure distal radioulnar joint stability. However, the deep components are covered and cannot be identified arthroscopically from standard radiocarpal joint view. Suturing sites described in previous studies have not been proved gasping of the deep components. The purpose of this study was to investigate our TFCC suture locations using relevant landmarks on securing the RULs' deep componen

Common Mental Disorders and Economic Uncertainty: Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic in the U.S.

Mental health disorders represent an enormous cost to society, are related to economic outcomes, and have increased markedly since the COVID-19 outbreak. Economic activity contracted dramatically on a global scale in 2020, representing the worst crisis since the Great Depression. This study used the COVID Impact Survey to provide insights on the interactions of mental illness and economic uncertainty during COVID-19. We used a probability-based panel survey, COVID Impact Survey, conducted in the U.S. over three waves in the period April-June 2020. The survey covered individual information on e

Clinical Implementation of Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring, 2015-2016.

INTRODUCTION: Self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP) plus additional clinical support is an evidence-based strategy that improves blood pressure control. Despite national recommendations for SMBP use and potential cost savings, insurance coverage for implementation is limited in the U.S. and little is known regarding clinical implementation. METHODS: In 2017, using 2015 and 2016 DocStyles survey data from 1,590 primary care physicians and nurse practitioners in U.S. outpatient facilities, SMBP-related clinical practices and provider roles were assessed. RESULTS: Almost all (97%) resp

Biomechanical Study of a Subscapularis Repair Technique for Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

Secure subscapularis repair is an essential element of total shoulder arthroplasty. Some surgeons prefer subscapularis peel because of ease of use, but some evidence suggests that lesser tuberosity osteotomy provides better fixation. The authors developed a novel, through-implant repair technique and performed a biomechanical study of its strength with cadaveric specimens. The authors obtained 20 matched pairs of cadaveric shoulders and inserted an uncemented short-stemmed humeral prosthesis that facilitates through-implant repair in all specimens. For each cadaver, the subscapularis was repai

A community based field research project investigating anaemia amongst young children living in rural Karnataka, India: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is an important problem amongst young children living in rural India. However, there has not previously been a detailed study of the biological aetiology of this anaemia, exploring the relative contributions of iron, vitamin B12, folate and Vitamin A deficiency, inflammation, genetic haemoglobinopathy, hookworm and malaria. Nor have studies related these aetiologic biological factors to household food security, standard of living and child feeding practices. Barriers to conducting such work have included perceived reluctance of village communities to permit their children t
