Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy in Iranian patients.

INTRODUCTION: HIV self-testing (HIVST) has the potential to increase uptake of HIV testing among untested populations in sub-Saharan Africa and is on the brink of scale-up. However, it is unclear to what extent HIVST would be supported by stakeholders, what policy frameworks are in place and how variations between contexts might influence country-preparedness for scale-up. This qualitative study assessed the perceptions of HIVST among stakeholders in three sub-Saharan countries. METHODS: Fifty-four key informant interviews were conducted in Kenya (n=16), Malawi (n=26) and South Africa (n=12) …

Acceptability and Feasibility of Remote PrEP Visits for Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa.

The World Health Organization recommends differentiated service delivery (DSD) models for HIV prevention, including alternatives to clinic-based PrEP services. This study assessed the acceptability and feasibility of remote PrEP delivery-including HIV and pregnancy self-testing, and phone-based adherence counselling-among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Johannesburg. The research was nested within the PrEP SMART trial (2019-2022), which evaluated scalable adherence support strategies for AGYW aged 18-25. During COVID-19 lockdowns, PrEP refills and testing kits were delivered to part…

Cognitive fatigue in patients with myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive fatigue has frequently been reported in myasthenia gravis (MG). However, objective assessment of cognitive fatigability has never been evaluated. METHODS: Thirty-three MG patients with stable generalized disease and 17 healthy controls underwent a test battery including repeated testing of attention and concentration (d2-R) and Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test. Fatigability was based on calculation of linear trend (LT) reflecting dynamic performance within subsequent constant time intervals. Additionally, fatigue questionnaires were used. RESULTS: MG patients showe

From the NIH: proceedings of a workshop on the importance of self-obtained vaginal specimens for detection of sexually transmitted infections.

On June 27, 2006, the NIH conducted a workshop to review published data and current field practices supporting the use of self-obtained vaginal swabs (SOVs) as specimens for diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The workshop also explored the design of studies that could support FDA clearance of SOVs for STI testing, particularly for specimens collected in nonclinical settings including patients' homes. This report summarizes the workshop findings and recommendations. Participants concluded that self-obtained vaginal swabs are well accepted by women of all ages and that SOVs per

HPV self-collection for cervical cancer screening among survivors of sexual trauma: a qualitative study.

Intimate partner violence affects 20-30% of women in the United States. Disparities in routine cervical cancer surveillance have been demonstrated in certain populations, including victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). This study examined and assessed the acceptability of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) self-collection among individuals who have experienced IPV. We conducted an observational study using qualitative data collection and analysis. We interviewed individuals with a history of IPV and who currently reside in Oregon. This study identified key themes describing knowledge and attitudes to

Impact of peer‑led education on sexual health outcomes among female sex workers in Arak, Iran.

Female sex workers (FSWs) are among the populations most vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. Peer-led education has been recognized as a promising approach to improving sexual health literacy and reducing high-risk behaviors in marginalized populations. This quasi-experimental controlled study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a peer-led sexual health education intervention among FSWs in Arak, Iran. A total of 68 FSWs were recruited from HIV special care centers in Arak (intervention group; n = 34) and Tehran (control group; n = 34) using random selection from ac

Anosmia and other SARS-CoV-2 positive test-associated symptoms, across three national, digital surveillance platforms as the COVID-19 pandemic and response unfolded: an observation study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple participatory surveillance platforms were developed across the world in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a real-time understanding of community-wide COVID-19 epidemiology. During this time, testing criteria broadened and healthcare policies matured. We sought to test whether there were consistent associations of symptoms with SARS-CoV-2 test status across three national surveillance platforms, during periods of testing and policy changes, and whether inconsistencies could better inform our understanding and future studies as the COVID-19 pandemic progresses. Population screening for BRCA1/BRCA2 founder mutations in Ashkenazi Jews: proactive recruitment compared with self-referral.

PURPOSE: Population screening of three common BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations in Ashkenazi Jews (AJ) apparently fulfills screening criteria. We compared streamlined BRCA screening via self-referral with proactive recruitment in medical settings. METHODS: Unaffected AJ, age ≥25 years without known familial mutations, were either self-referred or recruiter-enrolled. Before testing, participants received written information and self-reported family history (FH). After testing, both non-carriers with significant FH and carriers received in-person genetic counseling. Psychosocial questionnaires were self-ad

Developing a Customizable Texting Intervention for Diabetes Self-Management: Participatory Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled diabetes contributes to serious comorbidities and mortality. Effective self-management can improve outcomes, though barriers such as limited education and support often prevent patients from engaging in such behaviors. Automated texting systems show promise to deliver diabetes self-management education as they are accessible and scalable. Furthermore, customizing these systems may further enhance patient engagement compared to standard, one-size-fits-all approaches. However, such customization is more resource-intensive, and it remains unclear whether the added effort
