Background: Brucellosis is an endemic disease in Latin America and other countries. Serologic cross-reaction between cholera and Brucella infection is well recognized. The coagglutination test with concentrated urine was tried in 59 patients with validated generalized forms of meningococcal infection and in 23 ones with meningitides and pneumonia of a different etiology to assess the diagnostic value of this test. We report a case of early latent syphilis (reactive serologic tests without clinical evidence of disease within 24 months from the onset of the infection) in pregnancy. Despite an appropriate maternal treatment with benzathine penicillin G, sonographic signs of fetal syphilis were detected. Follow-up scans, in addiction to serial serological tests, have allowed the identification of fetal infection and therefore the failure of antibiotic therapy. We highlight the importance of ultrasound in suspecting fetal infection and in evaluation of the fetal response after penicillin treatment.

Erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC) is a figurate erythema that has been associated with man diverse entities. A case of EAC was related to infestation by the nematode, Ascaris lumbricoides. A careful examination of the patient did not define an immunologic basis for EAC. Results of lymphocyte stimulation tests of the patient showed an immune response to A lumbricoides extracts but not to A suum extracts. This finding is of practical importance, since most laboratoires use A suum extracts in routine skin and serologic tests for human ascariasis.

We used real-time PCR to detect Bartonella henselae DNA in 7.9% (5/63) of blood specimens from seronegative patients in Japan suspected of having cat-scratch disease. The combined use of serologic tests and real-time PCR to analyze blood specimens is recommended for the prompt, noninvasive laboratory diagnosis of cat-scratch disease.

A 38-year-old male with terminal transferase positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia experienced fever, polymicrobial bacteremia, gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain during induction therapy, and remission. Cecal perforation, Aspergillus peritonitis, and subsequent disseminated aspergillosis were successfully managed with colon resection, drainage, and antibiotic and antifungal therapy. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated associations between rheumatologic serology patterns and different interstitial lung disease (ILD) patterns.
METHODS: We present novel findings of a historic cohort study (n = 454) with data collected from 2011 to 2021 within our hospital system. In this institutional review board-approved study, data regarding rheumatologic serologies and ILD patterns were noted based on chart review in patients with scleroderma. The Kruskal-Wallis rank sum and χ2 tests were used for statistical analysis.
