Behavioural and service-context correlates of tetanus vaccination intention after trauma exposure in China: a cross-sectional BeSD study.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma-care encounters provide an opportunity to assess tetanus risk and deliver post-exposure prophylaxis. We primarily examined behavioural, social, and service-context factors associated with tetanus vaccination intention using the Behavioural and Social Drivers of Vaccination (BeSD) framework. We additionally described documented vaccination, guideline-based indications, and exploratory algorithm-classified guideline concordance among trauma-exposed adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at 12 healthcare sites in Quzhou, China, from March to May 2026. Vaccina

Cow Milk Risk Factors Associated With Bacterial Contaminations Along Dairy Value Chain in Lushoto and Handeni Districts, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Milk and milk products are of high nutritional value but mishandling of any kind along the value chain leads to contaminations that shorten shelf life and pose public health threats. OBJECTIVES: To assess the milk handling practices, bacterial contaminations and determine selected milk-borne zoonotic pathogens along the dairy value chain in 14 villages. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lushoto and Handeni districts whereby 93 randomly selected respondents constituting farmers, vendors and restaurants/kiosks were interviewed and subsequently 166 milk samples were

Improving outcomeS for Women diagnosed with early breast cancer through adhErence to adjuvant Endocrine Therapy (SWEET): study protocol for a pragmatic randomised control trial of a patient-centred intervention to improve adherence to endocrine therapy in early breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: At least 5 years of adjuvant endocrine therapy substantially reduces risks of recurrence and mortality in oestrogen-receptor positive early breast cancer. However, adherence to endocrine therapy is sub-optimal; poor adherence is associated with higher risks of recurrence and death from breast cancer, worse cancer-specific health-related quality-of-life, and increased healthcare costs. The SWEET randomised control trial aims to evaluate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the HT&Me intervention in reducing poor adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy and improve cancer-specific

Effectiveness of a community-centered Newcastle disease vaccine delivery model under paid and free vaccination frameworks in southeastern Kenya.

In the absence of effective drugs, vaccines constitute the cornerstone for the prevention of Newcastle disease (ND). Different strategies have been implemented to increase vaccination, but uptake remains low, underscoring the need for novel vaccine delivery methods. We designed and assessed the effectiveness of a community-centered ND vaccine delivery model in southeastern Kenya. Under the model, we sensitized smallholder chicken farmers (SCFs) through structured training on chicken husbandry, biosecurity, ND, and its vaccination, among other aspects. We subsequently engaged trained community

Habitat properties are key drivers of Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.) prevalence in Ixodes ricinus populations of deciduous forest fragments.

BACKGROUND: The tick Ixodes ricinus has considerable impact on the health of humans and other terrestrial animals because it transmits several tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) such as B. burgdorferi (sensu lato), which causes Lyme borreliosis (LB). Small forest patches of agricultural landscapes provide many ecosystem services and also the disservice of LB risk. Biotic interactions and environmental filtering shape tick host communities distinctively between specific regions of Europe, which makes evaluating the dilution effect hypothesis and its influence across various scales challenging. Progress towards Bait Station Integration into Oral Rabies Vaccination Programs in the United States: Field Trials in Massachusetts and Florida.

Bait stations for distribution of oral rabies vaccine baits are designed for rabies management in highly-developed areas where traditional distribution of oral rabies vaccine baits may be difficult. As part of national efforts to contain and eliminate the raccoon (Procyon lotor) variant of the rabies virus (raccoon rabies) in the eastern United States, the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services program, distributed vaccine baits by bait stations experimentally and operationally in Massachusetts during 2006-present, and in Florida

In utero heat stress decreases calf survival and performance through the first lactation.

Calves born to cows exposed to heat stress during late gestation (i.e., the dry period) have lower birth weight and weaning weight and compromised passive immune transfer compared with those born to dams that are cooled. However, it is unknown if heat stress in utero has carryover effects after weaning. The objective was to evaluate the effect of heat stress (HT) or cooling (CL) in late gestation dairy cows on the survival, growth, fertility, and milk production in the first lactation of their calves. Data of animals obtained from previous experiments conducted during 5 consecutive summers in

Associations between herd characteristics and reproductive efficiency in dairy herds.

Dairy herds worldwide are experiencing a decline in reproductive efficiency at the same time as management methods are changing. This study aimed to investigate the extent to which herd-level characteristics were associated with reproductive performance. Data from herds using artificial insemination (AI) in the Swedish Official Milk Recording Scheme that had more than 45 cows were included in the study (total of 2,728 herds). Reproductive performance was measured as the average for each herd for the calving interval, calving to first AI interval, calving to last AI interval, number of AI per a

Priorities for the elimination of sleeping sickness.

Sleeping sickness describes two diseases, both fatal if left untreated: (i) Gambian sleeping sickness caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, a chronic disease with average infection lasting around 3 years, and (ii) Rhodesian sleeping sickness caused by T. b. rhodesiense, an acute disease with death occurring within weeks of infection. Control of Gambian sleeping sickness is based on case detection and treatment involving serological screening, followed by diagnostic confirmation and staging. In stage I, patients can remain asymptomatic as trypanosomes multiply in tissues and body fluids; in s

Service dogs in a matched survey were more physically active and had higher odds of being fed grain-free diets than companion dogs.

OBJECTIVE: There is a strong, bidirectional relation between the health outcomes of service dogs and their human handlers. Despite this relation, limited information is available on service dog health. This study assesses differences in health status, diet, and physical activity among service dogs and companion dogs. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of the Dog Aging Project's Health and Life Experiences Survey, using data collected on or before December 31, 2021. Service dogs and companion dogs were matched on signalment. Descriptive statistics, conditional logistic regression, a

The cost-effectiveness of treating male trichomoniasis to avert HIV transmission in men seeking sexually transmitted disease care in Malawi.

OBJECTIVE: Allocation of funds to program areas where they may have an impact is critical to the success of any HIV control program. We examined the cost-effectiveness of providing first-line treatment for male trichomoniasis in Malawi, a condition not commonly considered in syndromic management throughout sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We used decision tree analysis to assess program costs and outcomes among a 1-year population of male sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic attendees estimated at 10,000 in Lilongwe. Our main outcomes were program costs from the government perspective and HI

Geographic distribution of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in Western Kenya: implications for anthelminthic mass treatment.

A survey of 1,246 children 10-12 years old in 32 primary schools in Kenya near Lake Victoria was conducted to determine prevalence and distribution of schistosome and geohelminth infections. Stool and urine samples were collected and examined for eggs of Schistosoma mansoni, S. haematobium, and intestinal helminths. A questionnaire was used to obtain demographic information and to quantify exposure to surface waters. Houses, schools, and water sources were mapped using a geographic information system. The mean school prevalence of S. mansoni infection was 16.3% (range = 0-80%). Proximity to th

Are we seeing the unseen of human trafficking? A retrospective analysis of the CTDC k-anonymized global victim of trafficking data pool in the period 2010-2020.

BACKGROUND: Human trafficking is considered a hidden global crime with unsubstantiated numbers. Despite the challenges in counting or measuring this crime, reports revealed the presence of around 40.3 million victims worldwide. Human trafficking results in severe detrimental impacts on both mental and physical health. Given the sensitivity and negative consequences of human trafficking on the global system and victims, and considering the scarce research in this area, our current study aimed at describing the (i) Sociodemographic profiles of anonymized victims, (ii) Means of control, and (iii)

Cageside Ultrasonography in the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit.

Global Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) and point-of-care ultrasonography carry the potential to screen for and monitor conditions rather than traditional means without ultrasonography. Advantages include being point of care, cageside, low impact, rapid, safe, and radiation sparing, and requiring no shaving and/or minimal patient restraint. Moreover, information is real time for free fluid and soft tissue abnormalities of the abdomen, heart, and lung, which are missed or only suspected by physical examination, basic blood and urine testing, and radiography. Heat stress effect on fertility of two imported dairy cattle breeds from different Algerian agro-ecological areas.

The present study investigates the susceptibility of two imported dairy cattle breeds to Algerian local climatic conditions, with a primary focus on heat stress (HS) and its repercussions on fertility traits. The dataset comprises 20,926 artificial insemination records involving 6,191 Prim'Holstein and 5,279 Montbéliarde cows. The animals originated from three distinct agro-ecological regions: littoral (L), semi-arid (SA), and arid (Ar), characterized by average annual Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) values of 75.2, 69.53, and 74.75, respectively. Logistic and linear regression models were pe

An investigation of the quality of meat sold in Lesotho.

Since the closure of the Lesotho abattoir in 2003, only imported meat can be legally sold. However, it was estimated in 2007 that 80% of the meat sold at butcheries comes from informal slaughter. The aim of this study was to investigate the situation. The number and location of informal butcheries in Lesotho (n = 143) were recorded and mapped using Geographical Information Systems. Observations (photographs) of informal slaughter indicated a lack of hygiene, unskilled slaughtermen and illegal disposal of offal with possible environmental pollution. In addition, a cross-sectional study was unde

Catfish Puncture Wound and Retained Spine Management in the ED Setting: A Case Report.

Fishing is a common recreational activity in the United States, with over 29 million registered fishers. Although not inherently dangerous, commonly seen injuries from fishing include embedded fishhooks and injury from flora and fauna. Emergency department (ED) physicians need a basic understanding of how to treat these less-than-frequent injuries. We present a case report of a patient who presented with a catfish spine lodged in her leg. These spines not only cause puncture wounds but can result in lacerations and venom release as well. Our patient presented 6 hours after the initial injury f

Tracheal injury from dog bite in a child.

BACKGROUND: Dog bites associated with the head and neck area in children are a common problem. Most of the lacerations are found in the upper lip and the nose region, and tracheal injury is rare [1]. Tracheal injury requires prompt and accurate diagnosis and treatment to rescue the patient. Especially in children, securing the airway is often more difficult than in adults because of their short neck and narrow trachea. In this report, we experienced a pediatric case of multiple dog bites with tracheal injuries in the neck. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 3-year-old girl who present
