The effects of intracerebroventricular angiotensin II on plasma aldosterone levels were studied in conscious and anesthetized sheep. Infusion of angiotensin II at 20 ng/min into the lateral cerebral ventricle raised plasma aldosterone levels. Since plasma cortisol increased in parallel with aldosterone, and as the response of both corticosteroids was obliterated by dexamethasone pretreatment, ACTH appeared to mediate the adrenal-stimulating action of angiotensin II. The identical electrophoretic isoenzyme patterns of a human-plasma-resistant Trypanozoon stock from a sheep and of two other stocks from trypanosomiasis patients in the Congo Republic indicated that the sheep stock was probably infective to man. These, and one further human stock from the Congo, closely resembled stocks isolated from man in Liberia and Ivory Coast.

Triclabendazole (Fasinex), a new fasciolicide of the benzimidazole group, was tested in sheep and goats. A controlled test with 24 artificially-infected sheep revealed a 100% efficacy of triclabendazole at a dose of 10 mg kg-1 body weight against Fasciola hepatica aged 4 and 13 weeks, respectively. The effect of prolonged phenobarbital (PB) administration on the toxicity of Senecio jacobaea (SJ) was studied in sheep. Hepatic microsomal mixed function oxidase (MFO) activity was monitored. Two groups of Merino sheep (with or without rumen fistulae) were used to study the effect of feeding maize-silage (compared to hay) on: thiamine concentrations in rumen fluid, tissues and organ; blood transketolase activity; microbial fermentation in the rumen. After sheep were transferred from a hay diet to maize-silage, thiamine concentrations in ruminal fluid fell to about 25% of control values on hay. A receptor specific for lipoglycans from Acholeplasma axanthum and Acholeplasma granularum was isolated from sheep erythrocyte stroma by extraction with n-pentanol and permeation chromatography. Cement dust has been found to be a source of selenium when included in the rations of sheep. In the work reported, rations including 3% by weight of cement dusts were fed to sheep for 165 days. The dust were taken from 3 collectors located at progressively greater distances from the coal-fired end of the kiln. Selenium levels and blood and tissues of the animals fed the cement dusts increased significantly above those of the control sheep. The cardiovascular effects of endotoxin in the unanesthetized chronically instrumented sheep were investigated. The observations were extended to include the response to intravenous infusions of dopamine to the same sheep at the height of endotoxin action. Studies on the host preferences of Culicoides imicola, the vector of bluetongue virus in South Africa, are reviewed. There is agreement that this species prefers to feed on cattle but will also feed on other bovidae and sheep. Over a seven year period cattle kept near sheep on a Natal farm appear to have appreciably reduced the incidence of bluetongue in the sheep. In addition to immunization this "decoy" approach is therefore recommended to assist in the protection of stock from insect borne diseases such as bluetongue and possibly African horsesickness and Rift Valley fever.

In nine sheep belonging to the same flock, C-cells hyperplasia of the thyroid, associated with calcinosis of the soft tissues is reported. The C-cells hyperplasia was probably due to excessive feeding with poultry waste, rich in calcium. The soft tissue mineralisation was a result of hypersecretion of calcitonin, a blood calcium-lowering hormone of the C-cells.
