Radiographic evaluation of regenerated bone following poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid/hydroxyapatite and deproteinized bovine bone graft in sinus lifting.

Although numerous biomaterials are used for maxillary sinus-lift surgery, the ideal material for such procedures has not yet been identified. Both heterologous and alloplastic bone substitutes have a solely osteoconductive effect and lack the osteoinductive properties of the bone morphogenetic proteins typical of autologous bone. Our group assessed a new alloplastic graft material, poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid/hydroxyapatite (PLGA/HA), implanted in a human model of maxillary sinus-lift surgery. For this prospective, random, double-blind trial, we used deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) as the co

Use of plasma rich in growth factor for schneiderian membrane management during maxillary sinus augmentation procedure.

The aim of this pilot study was to present a novel technique for the management of the Schneiderian membrane during maxillary sinus lift surgery using plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF). Eight maxillary sinuses were augmented in 8 patients. Two small perforations of the Schneiderian membrane occurred during the lifting procedure, which were solved using the PRGF clot before grafting the site with PRGF and anorganic bovine bone. With the exception of 1 patient who experienced pain following an acute sinus infection after 3 days of uneventful healing, the patients' postoperative quality of lif

Long-Term Comparison of Survival and Marginal Bone of Implants with and without Sinus Augmentation in Maxillary Molars within the Same Patients: A 5.8- to 22-Year Retrospective Study.

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) is widely used and considered a predictable procedure for implant placement. However, the influence of MSFA on implant survival and marginal bone loss (MBL) is still inconclusive. The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to evaluate the long-term genuine influence of MSFA on the survival and MBL of implants by comparing those with and without MSFA only in maxillary molars within the same patients. Thirty-eight patients (28 male and 10 female), with a total of 119 implants, received implants with and without MSFA, and were followed up fo…

Maxillary sinus augmentation using chairside bone marrow aspirate concentrates for implant site development: a systematic review of histomorphometric studies.

Maxillary sinus pneumatization following dental tooth extractions and maxillary alveolar bone resorption frequently leaves inadequate bone levels for implant placement. The objectives of this systematic review are to evaluate the effects of bone marrow aspirate concentrates (BMACs) used in maxillary sinus augmentation for implant site development.A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for studies which histomorphometrically evaluated the efficacy of BMACs and BMAC-enriched biomaterials in sinus floor elevation. Six studies w

[Ultrasonic bone cutting in oral surgery: a review of 60 cases].

PURPOSE: Surgical reconstruction of bony defects in the oral cavity can often be challenging since thin and fragile bony structures are especially prone to fracture cased by bulky cutting tips or the application of significant pressure by conventional mechanical instruments. The risk of accidental damage to adjacent soft tissue structures, such as nerves, by a dental drill or saw is also extremely high. The use of modulated ultrasound (piezosurgery) makes it possible to overcome such complications as a result of the precise and minimally invasive surgery technique which is limited to mineraliz

The Impact of Posterior Maxillary Teeth on Maxillary Sinus: Insights From Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Analysis.

Background Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis arises mainly from dental origins, emphasizing the connection between dental health and sinus issues. Understanding these relationships is crucial for implant planning, sinus augmentation procedures, and managing post-extraction complications. This knowledge can help clinicians make informed decisions about treatment timing and approach. In this study, the influence of tooth periapical and periodontal conditions on maxillary sinus mucous membrane thickening using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging was evaluated. Methods In this retrospective

A human histologic report of an implant placed with simultaneous sinus floor elevation without bone graft.

A titanium implant with an acid-etched surface was placed simultaneously with sinus floor elevation in a severely resorbed ridge of a 52-year-old man. The height of the residual crest was less than 3 mm, and no bone substitute was used to graft the sinus cavity. Six months after placement, the implants were uncovered, and no signs of mobility were recorded. The implant at the second molar site and surrounding bone were removed for prosthetic convenience. The specimen was harvested and processed for undecalcified histologic analysis. Poor bone quality around the implant was evident, characteriz

Maxillary sinus floor elevation using Beta-Tricalcium-Phosphate (beta-TCP) or natural bone: same inflammatory response.

Sinus elevation is a common procedure to increase bone volume in the atrophic maxilla to allow placement of dental implants. Autogenous bone is the gold standard but is limited in quantity and causes morbidity at the donor site. β-TCP is a synthetic biomaterial commonly used in that purpose. It appears to induce a poor inflammatory response. This study aimed to evaluate the degree of edema of the sinus mucosa after sinus lift surgery according to the type of biomaterial. Forty sinuses (20 patients) were included retrospectively and divided into 2 groups according to the biomaterial that was us

Regenerative potential of Schneiderian membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells in sinus floor elevation model and calvarial defect model.

OBJECTIVES: Schneiderian membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells (SMMSCs) have been reported to be osteogenic progenitor cells in vitro. However, there is controversy regarding the intrinsic osteogenic capacity of the Schneiderian membrane, and the bone formation potential of SMMSCs in vivo has never been reported. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the contribution of the Schneiderian membrane to sinus floor elevation and to verify the function of SMMSCs in cranial bone defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral sinus floor elevation with chloromethyl-benzamidodialkylcarbocyanine (
